Description
I was requested to do a song for a friend's mod of Half-Life 2. The brief was to do a track that was spooky. The scene he had in mind was a ghost town, with the character walking down the middle of the street. I had an idea, but I don;t think I pulled it off very well. I wanted it to be spooky and tense, but with an echo of the memory of happy times spent there. But I think it just sounds too..... pretty to be spooky.

very pretty -
I think you could give it a bit more suspense by building on that cello sound, adding a fifth above the pedal note, then an octave above. Also, the high pitched sound of the bell (or something) is really good for adding a sense of eeriness. Use more of that stuff, panned to different areas to add even more suspense. It is tough to be given a particular mood, and then writing music to fit it - for me it's easier to write music, and then define the mood it conveys.
Nice work with the synths and the wind.

It is too pretty...
to be spooky. It also sounds British (heh). It has depth, and it has a theme that comes across strongly, and at certain points in the piece that cello is as ominous as all hell. The vocal bits add a nice touch, but contribute a bit of sympathetic humanity to the piece, thereby prettifying it. I think trying to write for a game with a definite atmosphere, such as Half-Life (with which my son seems to have a personal relationship -- talk about ominous), would be a fun challenge. Nice work.

Yeah...
...it's not atonal enough to be spooky. It does end up being too beautiful.

That said, it has a charm about it. It's foggy Dickensian London theme music rather than Halloween Death Axe Slasher Murder music.

Good though!

I Love It
Beautiful in its simplicity. I love the textures. I agree: it's too pretty to be spooky.
