Description:
My sister-in-law first acquainted me with this hymn and its alternate setting. Since first hearing it a few years ago, I've wanted to record it--and so I finally have!

While the hymn "Take Time To Be Holy" is usually sung to the music by George C. Stebbins, this musical setting is from a traditional Irish folk melody named "Slane" for Slane Hill where, in 433 A.D,. St. Patrick defied the pagan High King Lóegaire of Tara by lighting candles on Easter Eve. ... Other folk songs have been written to this tune such as "Lakes of Champlain."
This musical setting is also the traditional accompaniment to the hymn "Be Thou My Vision."

Text: William Dunn Longstaff
1822-1894

Lyrics:
Take time to be holy,
speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in him always,
and feed on his word.
Make friends of God's children,
help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing
his blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy,
the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret
with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus,
like him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct
his likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy,
let him be thy guide,
and run not before him,
whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow,
still follow the Lord,
and, looking to Jesus,
still trust in his word.

Take time to be holy,
be calm in thy soul,
each thought and each motive
beneath his control.
Thus led by his spirit
to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted
for service above.

Great Hymn. Thanks for sharing that beautiful voice. Also, great work on those harmonies they seemed to melt right in to each other.

just in time...
I've always loved your sweet singing (yah yah, I'm not alone standing in this long line)... and I was enjoying your stark single vocal line... and just when I was thinking, "but, I also like her harmonies", with perfect grace and timing, the other Mysts drifted in to lift this even higher.

Excellent work, beautifully recorded and arranged, as always.

Drakonis

This is really the type of song you excel at....Clear powerful lyrics, sung with grace, right on pitch, and excellent breath control. Classic! You have the power to move souls Mysti. I'd like to see you use it in this way more often....Peace, Norman

Nice
Reminded me of one of the scenes from "oh Brother where for art thou" with George Clooney. That wonderous vision they ecountered with the sweet harmonies.

Very angelic.

Lovely
I've heard this tune with different words, and these words with a different tune, but this is really a nice pairing. I really enjoyed it when you brought in the harmonies. (Your build reminds me of another hymn called 'Jesus Christ the Apple Tree'. English, I believe, but the tune sounds very folk like.) Anyway, nice singing!

Beautiful singing
You have created a beautiful rendition of this. I had never heard these words to this music, but it's nice. These lyrics, like those of so many hymns, are profound and poetic. Thanks for sharing.

Stunning work. I love your voice, and the harmonies here are just stunning. I'm going to have to listen to this again when my housemate ISN'T in the shower next to my room so I can give it the attention it truly deserves. ;)

Hi Misty.......
I thought that this arrangement was excellent.

The doubling, etc. of voices seemed to make the song even better as it progressed. Everything was done very tastefully and sounded really good.

All in all, to me, it was well done, and one for me to listen to again, at my leisure.

Take care.

Paul

Hi Mysti
I'm a loud and proud agnostic-athiest, and yet I still love this! Of course the message is one of happiness, peace and goodwill, good stuff. BUT! The best part about this song is your AMAZING vocals! ANGELIC to say the least. I mean... come on! That is just simply gorgeous. I'm even gonna download it! Thank you so much for sharing that!

Lovely!
"Be Thou My Vision" is my favorite hymn of all time. (If I listen to Van Morrison's version after a glass of wine I start bawling and blubbering like a baby. It's really quite pathetic...)

I wasn't aware of this hymn until now. It's quite lovely and profound, and you deliver the goods with your melodious vocals and harmonies Cat.

Many thanks for this little sonic flower.

Be well!

There is this thing about hymns...
...especially the good ones, that even if one doesn't believe in every word of them literally and as written, there is a feeling in and behind them that comes through and feels true, feels liberating, nonetheless...

This one has that quality and to spare... Lovely singing...

Praise The Lord!
This is just what I needed to hear on a Sunday night. I have to admit, when I heard the solo voice, I began to roll my eyes. Then, the harmonies began to build...

I hope this isn't the only one you've done or will do. I'm considering arranging an a cappella version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" for this Christmas season. This is inspiring the possible to be definite.

God bless you.

well done faithful servant
I think William D. Longstaff would be well pleased to hear your creation of his lyrics. But most of all that it glorifies God.
