Description

This is what became of reading books two and three in the first trilogy about Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, by Stephen S Donaldson. I have posted two shorter pieces before and these are, slightly remixed, included in this longer "masterpiece" asked for in earlier comments...

I had some problems with the solosynth sound in the second part, but tonight I tried a very different approach and I think it turned out reasonably well (might go at it again sometime but it is not this time). Never say never, but this probably concludes my musical aspirations concerning Mr Covenant.

After this I'll be installing Logic Studio and I'll never be able to learn it enough to post any songs made in it, so... :-/

the trilogy completes...
Overall, I like the way you have things slowly build and flow from section to section. The only negative thing... the mix sounds very "high" heavy... there is not much "low bass" sound in this. This is just my dragon bias, since I like a bit of rich deep growly bass in my music here and there. Anyway, this is very soft, ethereal, uplifting, thoughtful. Nice choices of synth voices, the breathy voice in the second half sounds just fine to me. And of course, I have to mention that I hear a little TD influence... always a good thing :-)

I thought I'd probably get that bass comment from someone, but I can't seem to fix that bit at the moment. Except for playing lower notes, what do you suggest? I've tried a bit of equalizers but it doesn't seem to help a lot. Maybe Logic can help me with this problem ;-)

We've just enjoyed the various Drakonis videos here today, both the hot air balloon video, which was very nice, especially intro and outro with your music, AND the JibJab Halloween clip. Great fun!

Glad you liked this! I messed it up a bit in the second part before I noticed that it was the sound I was using that really caused the disharmonies that I wanted to get rid of. Once I tried a very different sound more or less of my own making in GB those nasty guys disappeared but I had messed with the original solo notes so they sound a lot less natural now. Thought I had to post before I ruined it completely ;-)

Covenant.
Another ambient masterpiece. That's it. No more ambient for me. I can't keep up.

Being unfamiliar with the books, I don't know the context, but your music definitely conjures up enough that I can superimpose my own context, and I'm betting that I wouldn't be far off.

This is beautifully composed and produced and very atmospheric. I like the fact that you're not shy about composing lengthy pieces. You take the time to say what you need to say. Even so, the time flies by pretty fast. There's not a superfluous note to be found.

I like all the sounds, and I didn't notice that there was a need for more bottom end.

So, we won't be hearing any more from you as you helplessly drown in the quicksand of Logic Studio? Why don't I believe that?

Pro level stuff. DLed.

Thank you so much for this comment! It made my day. With life savers like yourself maybe even Logic won't kill me ;-)

I am glad you like it long. Actually it is NOT my strong point, but my brother always tells me to go for full length if there is potential in the song, and this time I tried that. But there is still room for longer pieces. TD was mentioned above and their best music was made in LP side's lengths, i.e. at least 20 minutes (times 2)...

And now for the bottom line: Don't you EVER stop making ambient music! Least of all because of me. You are the groundbreaker here, with your (very successful) attempts at combining genres and thereby developing them. It is rather you that is the leading star here whom I can only dream of "keeping up with". Please?!?!?!

simply amazing ....
the ambience on this is wonderful and the piece flows extremely well. Possibly some additional bass boost would be nice but that is indeed arguable as the piece works so well on all levels as is. I am just really thankful I was able to discover your music and apologize for taking so long to do so...... mu loss really :-]. A soaring beauty and well worth a download !

I am very happy you liked this one. A small "pay off" for your own great musical gift of the BigFinish-project. I'll send you a note about that soon, btw.

What has been nice working on this piece was to discover that I dared try to explore some of the soft synths I had installed in GB a long time ago, and that they were usable. That made me understand, alas a bit too late, but nevertheless, that I could make my own software instruments and not only relying on the presets. The self-confidence I got from this discovery will come in handy when I am now going to install Logic Studio with the endless possibilities that come with that.

Thanks again for your great support. It makes it all worth while...

	Land The synth work is very impressive. The music reflects the beauty and majesty of the Land nicely. I enjoyed this and the books very much. The solo synths sound very good to me, so I don't know how much bass you really need to add. I'm really glad you think I got it right for the books. Not too "nice" but a little "edge" too, is what I was aiming for. There is definitley something to these books, not very easy to read but in some manners rewarding at the end of the day. Now I am reading another "fantasy" trilogy (five books...) and that is Lian Hearn's Otori saga, Across the Nightingale Floor and so on. A bit teenage-ish perhaps but a nice smooth read, set in an old Japanese setting. Maybe some Japanes music will come out of it, we'll see ;-)

P.S. About speakers: My cheap old 2.1 speakers at work did surprisingly well for this tune, rather better than my $200 Altec Lansing here in my "studio". On my wish list is a pair of studio monitors, maybe Edirol MA-15D for about $200.

Oh wow - you read those books? AND you like Tangerine Dream???? I remember the pleasure I had pulling out their Soundtrack to the movie, (on vinyl) 'Sorcerer' and playing it for my son who was into Trance Music at the time and told him that this was where it all began. He seemed pretty impressed at his old dad. A lot of coloring going on in this arrangement - very nice and relaxing.

Well, I did read the three first eventually, despite some inner resistance at doing so, but I'm glad I got that far at least. There is still the second trilogy waiting in the book shelf and more in the making "as I speak/type"...

Ah, Sorcerer! That's a classic soundtrack for you! But do you mean that trance comes from that album (or from TD at large)? It might, I guess, but I didn't know... But TD has been a favorite for a long time. More or less until I found this great place and discovered that there is so much else going on in the music world :-)

The movie was the first time that I ever heard them and then figured that they had made their mark especially as I heard other artists express themselves similarly. I can't make sure and fast claims as to who had started the genre.... I think it all happened at once anyway as technology went that way to begin with. Richard Moog, etc.

Fabulous piece.
Excellent choice of sounds Henke. I would like more development of the TD(ish) theme at the end. Just call me Oliver (Please sir... can I have more?)!

One point I would make as you make yourself more familiar with Logic which I am sure you are by now. Instead of having to play more notes in your arpeggios as they develop, ramp in a tempo'ed delay instead (I know real Tangram!) and let the delay gradually add the 16ths. But that's a small point really (and perhaps you already do it now, if so forgive my presumptiousness). It's just fun to do!! And I could almost hear it in this.

By the way, I added you because you commented on my collab with Lori Cunningham.

Thanks for this great comment. Really glad you liked this piece. I would like to develop that last sequence too, but I was/am a little worried I will only spoil what is already there. But maybe some day. Or for that matter if YOU would like to have a go at it...?!

As for Logic, my musical inspiration does what the bears do in winter, it goes into hybernation. I have not even opened Logic this year :-( so I don't really know what you are talking about, but it will be interesting to have a look at it once spring is coming with new musical hope and inspiration.

This is my favorite of my own songs, even if some technical stuff got in the way to that *totally fabulous* song it might have been. The solo synth in the second part is kind of hesitant and not quite what I had in mind. But still, it's rather nice... Unfortunately I then got Logic Studio and drowned like I foretold. A pity since I felt I was getting along nicely with GB at this time. Alas. Maybe the summer will bring some new music...

Covenant the Unbeliever
Really nice ambient sounds, especially the synths starting near 6'00 as they remind me the "Synthesizer greatest" cds I love.

The first part seems to reflect the dark soul of Covenant, then the song turns into something more etheral, softer and lighter as the character tries to change himself into a better human being. Still the song continues to be pregnant with sadness and nostalgia until the end. I just miss a better drums sound if I can quibble.
