Description:
A long time ago Bryn sent me a track of lush keyboards and acoustic guitar and asked if i wanted to mess around with it. He said it reminded him of Bowie meets Air, which is very close to the mark. I added some vocals, slide guitar and percussion and rearranged the parts a bit so I could sing easier. Bryn is also working on a version which is far superior to this one. The guy is the master of mixing and editing. My skills at vocals are pretty much hitting record, adding some reverb and hoping it doesn't jump into the red too often.
Anyways, now it sounds like Air jamming with PInk Floyd, and there is a little Hunky Dory in the middle. Can't wait to hear Bryn's version. I just did this to play around with mixing on Logic, Bryns is the version to watch for.

Hardware:
Bryn uses so much stuff he needs a wikipedia entry, I used an MXL USB mic, an M-audio 49 e keyboard for about 46 seconds at the end, my trusty fender tele, and the line 6 toneport.Software:

there's a Floydian slip in there somewhere.
Michael, I like this a lot...very whimsical...Beatles Meets Floyd and a hint of Tull
michael2
i like those bands (especially Floyd). Bryns track was really inspiring, so this was pretty easy to write vocals to. thanks for listening.
Vic Holman
pretty cool. i'm looking forward to Bryn's take.
you know it just seems that you can pretty easily find a way to add vocals to anything.
michael2
glad you enjoyed. Bryn had written such a great instrumental track, it was a cinch to come up with vocals. he sent me a really interesting mix he was working on, but i think he is on a well deserved hiatus right now. everyone needs to recharge their batteries evry once in awhile, Byn is more prolific than anyone I know (and has incredible skills and attention to detail). thanks for the kind words.

i love the bass in this. i can feel it in my chest. great vox michael, as always. you got a tape echo thing going on in there somewhere? whatever it is, sounds good. really caught me off guard when the country flavored Beatlesque stomp kicked in too. incredible tune.
michael2
thanks man. all of the cool touches you mentioned were Bryns handiwork (the bass and the tape echo warble). i just sang and played some slide. he is a crazy man, always comes up with great ideas and productions. i really think he sould be huge (in an Eno sort of way). thanks for listening.
Relic67
nice relaxed vibe, anglophilic vocals with catchy melodies and harmonies... was that some slide guitar in there?
You already covered the "spot the influence" comment part so I'll leave that out, but does have a kind of classic feel.
I can imagine hearing this one on "Radio Paradise"...
very much enjoyed.
michael2
very kind of you. yeah that is slide that i doubled an octave lower. it is kind of a David Gilmour tribute. always loved his slide playing. thanks so much for listening. hey, what's radio paradise?
Relic67
it's a popular internet radio station... they play good music.
i'm not sure how they choose their tunes but there seems to be an overall esthetic which I thought your tune would fit in with.
regulus
and composition all way around. I agree with all the above.
I's there an encore to be waiting for??
michael2
glad you liked. i'm sure there will be a couple of versions of this one.

...how that relatively low-in-the-mix strummy guitar (is that the Tele? sounds acoustic-y) sort of binds the structure of the song and keeps all the washy synth stuff on purpose... I also really like the vocals...
[You're going to have to coach me via Internet on doing the TonePort thing...]
I have a feeling this'll be a song that I really revisit...

so glad you liked this one, i had fun. the strummy acoustic was on the track that Bryn sent me, and you're right. it really holds it all together. the tele is the slide guitar stuff. check your mail for toneport assistance.

I can't remember the last time I listened to one of your songs and didn't feel inspired to make music afterwards. You always make such wonderfully enjoyable songs while always teaching me to think differently, too.
michael2
seems like forever since we chatted. thanks for listening to this one, and you are way too kind. bryn did all of the hard work on this one, i just kind of added a few things. i was really blown away when he sent me the tracks originally and recorded my bits in GB. i was moving stuff over to my new computer, saw this one and thought i would try and do a mix in Logic. i'll probably try another mix as the Gb file opened up really strange in Logic (a bunch of weirdly placed busses and defauts), so i want to try and build it from scratch (instead of in an a rushed 1/2 hour session). by the way, you are very kind.

Reminds me of Big Star - and a little bit This Lilac Time. Great singing Michael - and the usual superlatives for Bryn!

Ye this is a cool Art Rock kinda song ...very very
what a master touch in arranging and sort all these
elements ..Man your vocal is just one of the finest !!!
yes very floydian ...top Notch !!! thnx alot for sharin !!!!!
bud
Your vocals sound excellent and whatever you did to shape this into a song - you did a fine job. As usual - Bryn's work is awesome - I could swim in his atmosphere all day. Nice work boys.

So much pop sensibility, but it's still so heavy in complexities. I like sugar in my tea and this is so heavy in both. The bouncy piano bridge stands out for me.
DWL
I hear a bit of Stackridge and XTC. No bad thing at all.
I loved the vocal work and the understated backing.
Lovely stuff!
Cheers

really like the laid back strumming - and the slide guitar. love the piano break around 3:15 - lennonesque. as always your vocals are slippery cool - i dig that spacey synth behind the vocals too. someone else mentioned it but i'll agree that the amazing thing is the way that you can take any tune and apply meaningful, interesting vocals to it.
lavalamp
but, I totally hear Floyd. You can't deny that. A touch of Bowie, too.
Great job guys.

you have away with harmonies a very beatle sounding mix. the piano is perfect! excellent!

It was quite a surprise to me to see this posted.
:-)
First of all, my great apologies for not being able to work on this as quickly as I would have liked. I think I sent you the files originally back in May or June and then I got a bit overwhelmed with stuff (a month long trip to the UK, loads of collaboration work, new job when I got back, the infernal heat heat here in Phoenix which has only really subsided this week, etc etc) Stuff just got in the way....
Secondly, when I first heard your additions to this I was blown away (I think lots of people here have expressed very well the way I felt) You are an amazingly talented guy and if you think I am prolific then I would urge you to take a look in the mirror...I think you beat me hands down on that score. I think the main difference between you and me is your more organic approach compared to my technical approach although I think we are both true to the dilettante spirit of open minded experimentation.
Third, my version of this is in stasis at the moment. I hope... no I know I will get back to it at some point (along with another biggie for me which is also based on one of your tunes which I have called "Shoulders of Orion")
Thank you for posting this version Michael
I like what you have done VERY much

I would love to get me some goggles like the one the head is wearing in your song art

is such a cool chord progression. I like this a lot and can definitely hear the floyd references.
Actually, it's interesting when something gets compared to Pink Floyd just because of how broad of a sound they had, but this itself includes a lot of different elements. Parts of it, the slide and vocal harmonies, remind me of San Tropez from Meddle, while the tempo and chord progression are very More and Atom Heart Mother.
You have such an excellent voice for this kind of stuff Michael. This is a flawless collaboration. The elements coming together here would work well over the course of an entire album. hint... hint....

... I wish I had come up with the idea of an M2/Biba_Nova coupling myself .... cause it works so well together ! I had always thought of you two as having quite different styles ... yet this works so immensely well! Of course I should have known that when you put two geniuses together only more genius could come of it .... I was first shown evidence of this with the "Mount St. Helens" project .... and am blown away again by this one!
sloparts
something from Sergeant Pepper as well, or maybe Rubber Soul, can't decide. Very cool work here from both of you Michael. Takes me to the Beatles straight away, and I love it.
Kudos to you for the vocals in all their intricacy, it's wonderful.

Nice mix!
I see a Lennon influence, and yes Bowie.
I really like it!
guitapick
....the piano at @3:10. Perfectly placed...right on cue...great tune, guys...love it

Bryn does have a Midas touch, and you have taken that on board as well and made it Platinum. This is really good. Mind you I do like Floyd, Air and Bowie, but having said that this is original and again very nice. Well produced and brilliant collab.
P.s. I too am really looking forward to hearing Bryn's version.
estellie
Any chance we can have a read of them?
The music sounds beautiful and Lush, like you said.
I like the little music box keys that come in somewhere...adds a little color, and then they seamlessly disappear.

Man this is a good song man . I love it . I need to just make a few cd's from your collection here . Thanx for all the good times man .

Creatively and musically. Oh yea, and original.
