Description:
this one's a little quieter than some of my other posts, as i'm experimenting with a new mastering chain, so g'head and crank it!
so i was driving home with my gf, when i had this simple melody pop in my head and this cool progression that went underneath it. i interrupted the her talking and asked her to, “hang on a sec” and whistled the melody into my phone (it has the ability to take short, crappy sounding recordings). that's what you hear at the beginning of the song. i knew i'd forget it by the time i got home if i didn't record it. i only hope i remembered the underlying progression correctly. either way, i think it kinda works.
i wouldn't say there's lyrics, per-se. more like the improvised rantings of a mad man. i especially like how i say “please don't call” and “why don't you f'n call” in the very next breath. :)

you hit the nail on the head, feter! by design i was going from a quieter, narrow stereo field - the breaking it wide open in the choruses. thanks for checking it out!

I love this, how it builds from the cell phone whistle. I totally wasn't expecting the vocals, but they're totally cool - especially since i didn't understand most of them, just kind of added to the whole kind of ambient feel. I love the underlying progression you put in here, whether or not it was the original idea. Never got boring. Great piece, well constructed, cool sound choices. Thanks!
12parsecs
thanks for your comments. i like where the vocal is sitting. and you are right, it's just there to add texture and convey the mood. i thought about writing a bridge for this tune, but mood seemed to come through fine without one. cheers!
rsorensen
you know I love this one. good to hear you're able to make time for some non service stuff again, though the workout stuff rocked too :)
so tell me what's with that title anyway?
12parsecs
in html/urls %20 is used to denote a 'space'. clever, in a dorky way, i suppose. (he says, pushing up glasses and adjusting pocket protector.)

i wish i could remember the name of the band this reminds me of. This tune builds into a crushing wall of sound, very effect use of mastering skills, i use a similar set up to you with a strat and XT but i have yet to get that rich sound, do you give lessons? Wonderful track, i feel the sample fits well and gives it that extra edge. Great.

i think the band you may be thinking of, or at least this tune reminds ME of, is mogwai. i saw them when the came to vancouver about a month ago. one of my favs. their opening act, a uk electronica/wall-of-sound/shoegaze band called fuck buttons, was pretty cool too. i can hear their influence in this track.
i'd give lessons, but i'd have to charge for my travel time - which wouldn't be worth your while, methinks. hehe. :) i'm not doing anything too special. just keep experimenting.
and that sample (i think you are referring to) is my tc powercore virus synth. i highly recommend the powercore products!

Clean and crisp production. Cold Play meets U2, love it.
I like when you post tunes in this kind of genre.
Great stuff.

cool and crisp. that's the way i like it. like my lettuce.
thanks for your kind words, dave!

...goes to show you inspiration hits most anywhere...hope your gf was not talking anything serious at the time...haha!
12parsecs
naw, i probably wasn't paying attention anyway. =P

Thanks again. My 7 year old son and I enjoy Loud Louder Loudest, and one day I want to make a video of waterfalls building from a single drop to a raging cascade and back to a single drop to accompany it.
Peace,
Bob

dooood! i totally dig your video concept. do you dabble in cg? i know some flash animators... yeah, that's it! we'll do it in flash! (because flash animators love to do water! j/k. this is funny to one person on this site. and not even that funny that. =P)
glad you enjoy l-L-L-q and this tune! cheers!
SatelliteTragedy
hey i laughed. we could try it but yeah, it'd look like crap's crap

i always appreciate how a song can shift dynamics. this does it in a real cool way of being subtle to aggressive. excellent!
someone needs to take the phone away.lol.
12parsecs
LOL! yeah, i was talking a little loud into the phone there, i guess.
i often like to try to create dynamic songs. i wanted that first chorus to come in unexpectedly and crazy loud. i hope i achieved that - at least on some level. thanks for checking in out, vic!

A stroke of genius using the actual phone recording. Builds really well and and the guitar is just perfect.
You've got to have pretty good (or pretty weird) ears to hear the explicit :-)
Cheers

i think maybe i'll try recording a hook or main riff to my phone one time. it's just crappy enough to be charming. :) actually, i'm surprised my pitch was so on?!?
i agree you have to have weird ears to understand what i'm saying. but then, i do have weird ears... and, well, i "sang" it - so i guess i should know what i said. next time, though, i'm definitely writing something down and making more deliberate lyrics.
thanks for checking it out.
Mckenzie
i know i've said this before, but this is definately my favorite tune on macjams. Stunning arrangement.
Have you heard an instrumental called 'in a house - in a heartbeat' ? by a guy called john murphy? i might even prefer this to that piece, and i reeeally like that piece. if not definitely check it out on youtube, you'll well like it.
cheers

checked out in a heartbeat on youtube, like you said. rad tune! i like his progression - much creepier and less common than mine. i tend to write those 'feel good' progressions... you know, the ones where you kinda know what the next chord is. something satisfying about thinking 'oh man, i hope it goes here next..." and it does. it's like, 'ahhhh'... a sense of relief, almost. (<-- hmmm, DEFINITELY over analyzing. :)
anyway, thanks for checking it out. i'm looking fwd to your new tune(s)! don't keep your public waiting.
Elevator_Funk
...but it was well worth it. This pretty darn good. I like the tension and release here, the guitar throughout is prettly cool.
I usually get creeped out by gutteral screaming, but it fit the tune pretty well here.
Remark80
Love this one. I think the vocal placement is really great. Again, your melodies are really catchy. I will be humming this one all night. Thank you.
kingbee
I thought I could feel a Mogwai influence in here.
Have you heard the theme music to the film 28 days later?
Sort of similar feel....or even My Vitriol in their quieter moments.
Great stuff
Loved it
somebuddy
Wow, that was seriously awesome. And I don't know if I've ever said that in a post before, so that's saying something! Keep this stuff coming, please!
