Living in the Shadow

Description
This is only the second tune I have posted - way behind, I guess. Wrote this while singing my son to sleep a few years ago, once I tired of bedtime songs. Watching his face as he slept I couldn't help but worry that my wild, and mercenary romantic past might blemish his life; hopefully not. Tossed it in a drawer until recently. Thanks for listening.

Lyrics
Livin’ In The Shadow
by Jim Donaldson 11/08

1-When I see myself reflected
in the image of my son
I’m filled with shame and sorrow for
the sinnin’ that I’ve done.
I fear he’ll follow in my footsteps
where I stumbled in the sand.
A fool who failed to pass the test
Of what it takes to be a man.

2- The fault is mine that love and I
just never got along.
Still runnin’ with a daydream girl
I conjured up in a song.
And after two wives and their lawyers
finished skinnin’ me alive.
Reconciled to lovin’ less -
To fix what’s broken inside.

Chorus - So tired of livin’ in the shadow
Of whatever might have been.
Of living in the shadow of the life
I meant to live.
And these shoulda, coulda, woulda days –
Of yesterday are gone.
It’s time to step out in the sun and be free/let go
Livin’ in the shadow.

3 -Had some dreams in tow as I
meandered through this life.
Couldn’t make myself believe
That I’d ever get it right.
And while my friends are pushin’ babies,
And buying second homes upstate.
I am searching through Matchdotcom,
Always looking for a date.

Chorus - Tired of livin’ in the shadow
Of whatever might have been.
Living in the shadow of the life
I meant/wanna to live.
And these woulda, coulda, shoulda days –
Of yesterday are gone.
It’s time/I’m gonna to step out in the sun and let go
Livin’ in the shadow.

Bridge –
I’ve been wrestlin’ demons that always seem to win. Fighting with myself and always getting pinned.
I turned to prayer but the sign on the church said Jesus wasn’t in. My only hope is this song I wrote that churned within – now.

Tired of livin’ in the shadow.

So tired of fightin’, hopin’, scrapin’, prayin’, scratchin’ for the crumbs upon life’s table. I’ve had enough! I’ve had enough! I’ve had enough of ---

Repeat chorus to cold out.

Man...
This is great.
This has an ultra cool 60's vibe going on through it. If you combined the catchy popness of the monkeys and the coolness of the stone roses this is what you'd get...
I really like this, i'm surprised it hasnt got more comments. If I were you i'd repost it under a different heading and not country and western (pop/rock)as this song deserves more attention.
Great

contemporary classic
Great classic tune with great lyrics that really relate to modern times.
Cool backing vocals.
personally would have liked the drums just a little bit 'tighter' and maybe some hi-hats to accompany and fill in the rhythm section a bit but apart from that a great tune.

Not crazy about the drums myself ...
....blame my musician friend!

I wonder...is that something you can do. I am still new to all of this collaboration here. If so, give it a go and I'll forward your version to Larry who does the production. Or I'll see if he can provide the tune without drums for you to add...

drums
It depends on what music software you're using..and which version...because if you're going to send the file I need to be able to open it.
I'm using Garageband 3 ( haven't got round to update)
I'm willing to give it a drum tweak if it's compatable to do it.
You might have to send the file through 'yousendit' or maybe via e-mail address.
let me know how you feel about it
cheers

I'll check
....and see what there is to send off. I do know that my musician friend, Larry, used either Pro Tools or Logic Express this time when we recorded/mixed. I'll give him a call on Monday.

About those drums....
Kingbee

I chatted with my composer friend about your suggestion and he likes the idea, too. He used Pro Tools to record & mix....Wants to know what you prefer him to send you - a DVD copy of our Pro Tools files, or just email a MP3 without the drums ...can do either...

Jim

Retro
Very 60s/70s. Excellent pop song.

I agree that the drums are not optimal. The guitars and vocals on the other hand are lovely.
