Description:
This is the flip side to Hang Tight. Kind of an odd mix of alt country rock and post punk - i was listening to alot of Two Cow Garage when I wrote this. Lyrically this is one of my favorites - it's pretty much what happened. Disclaimer: those of you who are into cars will know that it could not have been a 69 mach II - in 69 it would have been a mach I. It was actually a 71 but 71 had too many syllables for the song :)
Lyrics:
I picked you up outside of John Marshall High Schoolarm out the window of my 69 mach II
old 97's on the pioneer tape deck
i'm making plans for ideas you aint even thought yet
you come runnin in your t-shirt and your black tights
hand in your gym bag feelin for your camel lights
jump in, throw your bag into the back
kiss me on the cheek and put your feet up on the dash
some day the summer will end
some day we'll go back to school
some day our hearts will be broken
but right now baby everything's cool
your read me stories from your fashion girl magazines
i kept the hammer down, lookin out for state police
singin to the radio and waving at the truckers
talking on their cbs bout the pony with the seat cover
stopped at a steak house off of 95 near rocky mount
tried to use your fake id for beer and got us thrown out
found a motel down the road in elm city
told the lady we were married and she laughed right at me
some day the summer will end
some day we'll go back to school
some day our hearts will be broken
but right now baby everything's cool

Glad you liked it dude, thanks for the listen!

I can see the video to this - it's exactly as you say in the lyrics. Crammed full of imagery, I feel that I was in the car too. and the diner, and the motel..
This was an episode of My Name Is Earl, right? If not, then it should have been.
Love those horn stabs towards the end. Surf-punk with that great trashy 'pulp' sound going on with the geetar and your vox.
Another fine piece of work, T. Thanks for the free, quality sounds, Man!

LOL! Ah man that brought tears to my eyes. Hilarious, and you're right. My teenage years were definitely straight out of "My Name is Earl"...

writing just great rockin alt pop tunes, you always manage to include outstanding production techniques. In this case the backing vocals stand out for me. Great lyrical imagery
tempie
this site has vastly improved my concept of production - guys like you set a fine example to follow!

Love this, and i can only echo what has already been said.
Really uplifting. It's make you want to party wherever you are music.
Brilliantly put together.
Great

man I really like to hear that - nothing better than a pop tune that just makes you want to tear it up, no matter where you are or what you're doing. was listening to the hold steady running errands this morning and that's how it made me feel, so very cool to hear that this tune does that for you. Thanks for the listen!!
Re-al
Great storytelling to a top notch tune.
Nice one!

Love your quirky, but poppy style. Loved this one. Your post keep getting better and better. Really fun song.
A couple of fills on the drums wouldn't hurt toward the end.
Excellent post my friend. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks man, you've commented on all my stuff along the way and I appreciate your ear and your time! You're right about the drum fills - i actually added some today - i liked the tune so much right off that I posted a bit quick. I'll put the newer version on my website in a few days, I'll let you know so you can check it out. Thanks again for your consistent comments dude.

cool, catchy song. :) reminds me of cracker (the band)!

thanks man, appreciate the cracker nod - cool band of very talented guys who also have a fascination with the trashy side of americana.
cjdaley
tight rocker and and such sense of detail in your lyrics! it's like being there!
This song like a miniature model of the U.S of A.
tempie
ah man love the vanishing point reference - too cool! Funny as it is this tune is closest to nonfiction of all my songs. Thanks for the listen - havn't heard from you in a while, glad you're still out and about!
jiguma
The lyrics are perfect, and I like nearly all of the production too. Great performance al round.
The bit that didn't grab me is the "some day the summer will end ...." section - to me the vocals were too compressed (I think it was a compression thing) and just sounded a little harsh on the ear. I agree with the comment about the drums too - glad to hear you're adding the fills etc.
Having made that comment about the chorus, I think that this is a classy pop song - it would sound brilliant exactly how it is, cranked up on the serious stereo in my daughter's Merc 380SLX with the roof down!

thanks for the listen and the suggestions - you're right about the chorus - I had left a track with compression from a previous mix in there - funny how on different equipment you hear things that you don't hear on others - i had to go back and listen with diff. phones to hear it. So on the new mix i removed that. i'll have to post the new mix here so everyone can hear it. really like the idea of this rocking on the stereo of a mercedes converitble! High class!
lengold
Fantastically visual lyrics, love the way that things that don't rhyme, do rhyme. A truly well crafted, played and performed song and a great fun listen.
Cheers

i like it. fits very well with your previous car tune. retro in a good way

This is a great fun song. I really like your voice on this one. Raw guitars...gotta love it.
tempie
man if it ain't fun it ain't rock 'n roll. i appreciate the nod, and thanks for the listen!

...name checking Old 97's! Love it (and them .. "Staggered" awesome track).
Your usual quirky pop licks and a terrific vocal arrangement, especially the chorus.
All you touch is gold man!!
tempie
good to see you around man! ray wiley hubbard sings that "in this world under heaven there are some things that are cooler than hell" and the old 97's would definitely fit into that category. glad you liked the tune!
VicDiesel
Great song. Nothing too complicated, but very enjoyable.
tempie
hey man i appreciate that - i try to keep it simple! thanks for the listen!

I'm looking forward to the 45 and my Tempie Army patch to sew on my jacket.
This is definitely one of my favorite Tempie Tunes©®%u2122
If I was in your band (and maybe one day I will be) I'da been looking for that simple 2 part synth track - the beauty beef bass (on the left) and the quivery high pitched riff (think of the video from the Flock of Seagulls where the dude is using BOTH fingers to play the synth riff - that's me!!)
Next thing I love is the fact that you had the big opportunity to rhyme with truckers and you chose covers. You are a class act! On top of that, you blew a whistle!
The horns - oh man, I didn't think it could get any better.
I'll be the next to say that I was sitting there watching the video. Your lyrics have such vivid imagery and this chorus is so cool.
I'm just glad I finally had a chance to comment. Technology has taken me away from my computer. Go figure that out.

tempie army patch! man i hadn't thought of that but i used to love those things. and if somebody ever wants to put an aging (but youth-full) rocker on tour you'll be right there with me. We'll do the family thing like Willie Nelson.
Diviner
Great track, does bring images of summer fun and a road trip. Really cool music, very impressed.

jaw-droppingly good one, straight to the ipod. "lisa you're the band" is still my favourite (always listen to it when i'm out for a run) but this one may overtake the #1 tempie spot. the backing vocals on the chorus are spectacular, the horn-like sounds on the instrumental break, also awesome.
I do try to drop the odd criticism in my comments but to date, haven't found anything to criticize with yr tunage I'm afraid...
tempie
since you wrote back when that you liked "Lisa, you're the band" i've used you as a kind of "cool meter" - in my opinion that is the best song i've written - but very few people get it - so you must have great taste lol! glad you liked this one - i had springsteen in mind, also drive by truckers, also steve miller band and of course that girl and the cool trip to SC. The fact that somebody can rock to any tempie tune on their ipod just makes me want to build a shrine to Apple...very very cool. Thanks man!
