Description:
Don't be cruel. This post if for posterity. Other old recordings of mine will follow shortly.
This is the first song I EVER wrote, almost 5 years ago. I recorded it right then so that I wouldn't ever forget it. It is sloppy. I recorded it with a sound recorder on a clunky old pc laptop. After the first song, I couldn't stop. And I fell in love with open mics and the attention it got me. Music was what got me through college a sane person.
As a graduate student, I found MacJams, and I felt like I had a support group for my "music problem". But I've been away a long time, and I want to return with new songs as well as new and better recordings of old songs. I thought I'd start by examining my first recordings. Here's my first installment...see what you think.
What it's about:
I had read an article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3492919.stm) about how there is a star somewhere that might possibly have inside it the biggest diamond in the world. Due to the way stars fade and shrink, they crystallize, and this star had all this time to create a diamond the size of which could not previously be fathomed, deep inside its core. It made me think that we could, hypothetically be living on a giant diamond and never know it, and then diamonds would no longer be so valuable, would they? It would just be the earth we live on. Thus the refrain, "the diamonds were under our feet, the whole time."
Sorry I don't have any other of the lyrics.

You know, I feel passion in it, passion for music, it's a obviously start of something beautiful, as itself is too.
why don't you record it again?
estellie
Yes, the idea is to eventually re-record/re-invent all the old ones...
You may listen to more recent recordings of newer songs to get a better idea of what I'm doing now.
I think what you're doing with music takes a lot of discipline.
Peace,
*E

yes I'm listening to them:)
Actually I can't name it discipline, I believe that my music is sudden release of emotions, so I can't put too much discipline in it, but of course there are some rules that doing them makes your song sound ok.
But at all I believe that music is emotions, not rules.
estellie
making music is a release, not a containment, and yet, it requires of us a certain amount of determined focus. I think your music reflects that focus.

as is. very raw. music is my therapy too. you know, i think i remember hearing about diamonds inside stars when I had to take astronomy (god that class was a lot harder than i thought it would be). post some more songs, they're nice and obviously mean something.
estellie
Thanks for indulging me. I do plan on posting at least one more of the old recordings while I work on some new stuff...

It's cathartic, that's for sure.
I will eventually do a proper recording of this. It's all on my super duper long to-do list...

yearning and guitar melodies are striking good. This is a low fi recording, but I like it that way. Reminds me of John Lennon demos from his Dakota apartment.
estellie
thank you for your comment on this and on "cigarette man". i hope you'll listen to the newer songs, too.
I think you're a fantastic musician. real rock and roll.
AND I'll have you know, I was in a bossa nova duo for a while, singing in portuguese and everything :) so that's nice to see, too.
echoroom
This sounds raw and rough, but your wonderful voice is still there. This sounds like a young foal finding its feet - your a mare now, honey!

that every taste is catered for here. Love your honesty. It's all music to our ears!
estellie
Too kind. I'm going to CHOOSE to take that as a compliment, ha ha. This is my first EVER song, and recorded that same day.
I thought it had some value for documentation's sake.
Thanks for listening!
egobandit

And a belated welcome to MacJams!
Yes, I was around for a while, made some great friends here, and then got lost in graduating from grad school, getting married, honeymoon abroad, moving across half the country, and then look for a job! All in a row! It was a crazy time...
I'm hoping to get back into what I love. Thanks for listening!
kristyjo
this recording won't win any production awards:) but it is so good that you had the inspiration to record this song right away, while the inspiration was still fresh. Now, you can take your time to redo it if you want, or just to leave it as is. Thanks for posting it. it is good to get a bit of a record of where your musical journey has taken you.
five_extra_arms
Ever since you got married all you talk/sing about is diamonds....
I am such a big fan of crude wax recordings (kidding) like these. The performance didn't bother me a bit, since I know what you could do with this if you played it a second time. In a former life, my Tascam 4 track was set up where most people would eat and at any given moment I could record an idea as it was developing - usually from the refrigerator all the way to the Tascam. I have dozens of instant moments I recorded and the best of them isn't this good, but I never re-recorded any of them. I always kinda enjoyed reliving those moments when they were captured and just lived with them and the curtains and those smells associated.
Thanks for posting this estellie. I really appreciate this moment we've shared. I almost feel like I was there and that you let me hit the record button.
Thanks!
Bob

I feel that statement the reason Im here listing to your music is because I needed a break from making music for a few minutes and decided to get on the jams :) Very cool concept it really almost brought a tear ...the world is so trivial and backwards for the most part god I never thought Id get jaded as I grew older .....alas diamonds are still held in the godly light ......what if:)
