did you know that when David Gilmour first joined Pink Floyd he supported himself as a male model? (1)
Description:
This was another experiment with Logic, trying to work out the intricacies of the sample editor. been having prolems where when I delete something , the next part merges with it and plays too early. took me a while to clean up that mess, but i'll get it. i do love that marquee tool though.
this is about being a little bummed that I'm getting older, but being glad that I have a family to make the road a little more worth traveling. i was thinking about how it seemed like every classic rock song i learned as a kid was always Am-G-F and ended with a guitar solo; so I decided to do a classic rock number with those guidelines. The drum beat is like something from Pink Floyd "More" as I can't put together realistic sounding bombastic beats with MIDI yet. all in good time my pretties.
The photo is from last xmas, it was really cold out.

Lyrics:
does anyone here rememberhow it used to be?
things that came before
seemed easier to me
now i have to look ahead
and play the whole tape through
have to take into account
what it means to you
long of tooth, short of breath
hair has turned to gray
now i've finally come to see
the indignities of age
safe to say
i've re-arranged
my priorities
simple times were left behind
for responsibility
hold me now
the way you did when we were young
hold me close tonight
so much time has passed us by
so much time has passed us by
all my obligations
all the things to do
all the consequences
seem to matter more to me
it's not just me
it's me and you
baby makes it three
every single thing we do
together til the end
long of tooth, short of breath
hair has turned to gray
now i've finally come to see
the indignities of age
safe to say
i've re-arranged
my priorities
simple times were left behind
for responsibility
hold me now
the way you did when we were young
hold me close tonight
so much time has passed us by
so much time has passed us by

I agree w u Tim.. DL'd for sure
michael2
thanks for listening. appreciate it.
michael2
thanks a bunch Tim, really stoked you liked it.

man when i first began browsing MJ I thought that your strength was in the arrangements - all those light as air beatlesque melodies and cool new folk type vocals. but the more i hear from you the more i think your unique genius lies more in your ability to marry really heavy themes to those light tunes - and not in an easy way - not in that lennon save the world type of way, which anybody can do, but in a much more difficult, "this is what the average guy has to do to get from one day to the next" type of way. If that makes sense. At any rate its admirable.
Cool theme, cool classic structure, and really ncie guitar soling. Thanks for the dl!
michael2
really far too kind of you. what else can a gracefully aging 43 year old write about? i'm not out in the clubs anymore sampling anything I can get my hands on. life is a bittersweet thing, but I do love it. beyond the fact that you liked my song, I really love that you can relate to where i'm coming from in general. thanks so much for the kind words.

You can bring the gretet music ever ...with the best
setting that nobody can guess they are MIDIs ..yes
this is very much ..MEDDLE not More ...but i think
this need Gilmours guitar licks ..just wonderful
thnx alot for sharin !!!!!
michael2
thanks so much, your too cool. i'm just like you, another guy with a guitar playing what he wants to hear. thanks so much for being so cool.
estellie
the lyrics resonate with me.
not to mention your vocal performance is chillingly perfect. your musical sensibility is sharp.
and you know, a lot of my favorite songs I learned and loved are also various combos of those three chords...

glad you can relate. i am by no means depressed about things, just sometimes I think about it and I feel like i'm really getting up there; but i'm 43 (the new 30). i live in LA and my neighborhood is the center of the young and the hip. it's weird to have seen things change so much in a life, most of all myself. it's a good thing though. thanks for listening.
estellie
I hope than means that when I turn 30 in a few years, I'll be the new 20!
P.S. You sound so young! I'd have never guessed your age...
particledots
this is one of the 'clearest' sounding things you have done
it sounds like you are really getting to grips with logic audio
its great innit???
:-)
michael2
i'm reallly trying hard. drums and working with mics is the hardest for me. but you are so right: Logic rules. it's fun to learn something new every day. thanks for the listen.

sounds really good - lovely sound on the vocal, and great harmonies. The lyrics are really well done - evocative and resonant, and soulfully performed. I really like the little touches on the piano; they add a very nice layer. Love More, by the way, and that drum sound is perfect! Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.
michael2
i've really been trying to get a better vocal sound, much easier with the ability to bus reverb and delay in Logic. the piano was a fluke, i basically just hit record and went for it. doing things fast and sloppy is my fave technique. thanks so much for listening, appreciate the kind words.
Vic Holman
more along the lines of P.F.'s Echoes.
you really captured the feel and sound. very nicely done!
i like it all, especially the sparse guitar lines.
getting old kinda sucks doesn't it, especially when you still feel like a kid inside.
michael2
can't deny my 60's psych obsession. just watched a video with P.F. live at the UFO club, i was tripping out because they were so rocking and I hadn't even been born yet.
i had a lot of fun doing this one, i never do guitar solos so that was a bit weird, but a blast was had for sure. thanks so much, and I do feel young inside. really have come to know the meaning of that old chestnut: "if i only knew then what I know now..."
jamorama
You are a phenomenon.
As for aging, it may be unpleasant, but when you consider the alternative....

I totally see Roger Waters influence all over this one. But, that's a good thing. Great production. I like the beat you chose and the lyrics are stupendous.
You often outdo yourself.

These are some very profound lyrics my friend. Now we know how it feels for a young "Rock Star" to get old and face the realities and ravages of time. The fire still burns bright, but it now warms the hearts of the ones you love as well.
Great production my friend, even the "Drums". The reason I say that is that the drums keep it going along without distracting from the real message of the song. So do the rest of the back tracks.
Great job here Mike, awesome song for sure it's gonna be a classic.

Great feeling.. I really dig this song... Full of soul..

PF for sure - i'm thinking DSOTM - balanced on the biggest wave
very good!
thanks

Micheal... Your experiments are often better than my best efforts it seems!

more and more. Great tune you've put together here Michael. Love the way you do the line "it's not just me - it's me and you - and baby makes it three". Sweet solo and overall grand production. I'm so jealous you're getting logic down.

Wow! Time marches on...
Whatta great presentation! Pensive. Reflective to the present moment.
Beautiful instrumentation.
ic42
it sounds of an early lost track from pink floyd. it is exquisite in musical construction. the singing voice is of a dream. the lyrics are scribbled on a napkin of a forgotten pink floyd dinner. the guitar is the center stone in a zen rock garden, perfectly placed. 0x0

Age is really just a number. If you have your health and love, it doesn't have to even be considered. I'm 60 and I still am 19, inside. Life is beautiful. You are a really gifted artist. Blown away by your submissions. We are lucky to have you here. Thanks.
Diviner
love the beats and the music as well actually. Lol, agree with ic42 that its sounds like a pink floyd track, which is a complement and I know its not intentional but thats how your tracks seem to turn out like. Very good though.

...the
"it's not just me
it's me and you
baby makes it three
every single thing we do
together til the end"
section is straight outta the Pink Floyd book of vocal phrasing techniques (not many copies sold apparently!). I agree about the "More" references - very authentic.
I sometimes think it's a good discipline to set yourself a guideline or template to work to - especially when learning software - it's amazing what can happen sometime -
As for drums - as I mentioned on my reply to you the other day - I think EZ Drums might give you some MIDI bombast options.
Phil
p.s just getting to the very end of the guitar solo fade now - very Dave Gilmour!!!!!!!
VicDiesel
When I listen to this tune it's as if time never left the 70s!
Very authentic sounding. The vocals, the organ, it all reminds of me stuff I thought I'd forgotten.
I would have used a drum loop here if you don't feel up to the job of programming. These drums are a bit out of place. It mostly misses cymbals and such.
michael2
i'm actually trying to force myself to learn to program drums. these are pretty much how i wanted them, but the next will be more ambitious (hihats, cymbals, etc...). thanks for the listen.

Phenomenal song - you ARE as good as Floyd here!
Great arrangement, lyrics, sounds. Divine!
The Infinites
are making music that you want to hear. I think that's the best reason to do it.
Wonderful song - DL'd for sure!

Nice, slow, melancholy mood. Time has been passing, but if you look for it, some of the simplicity is still out there. Nice, slow, melancholy mood.
Thanks

may have pain in your sacroiliac, perhaps a touch of rheumatism. But it seems to me you're in your prime musically.....Your guitar playing shows a touch of class, this makes me wanna hear more solos from you.
Lennon714
the chord progression in the chorus. It takes the melody interesting places. The progression itself is lighter than the verse progression, but not all rainbows and cuddles. It's the subtle things about your songs that make them so delicious. The solo had traces of George Harrison in it.
five_extra_arms
Ouch.
Your eloquent lyrics speak volumes to me. I saw grey chin hairs the other day and a single grey chest hair (on me). I'm freaking out.
Ah, but your song has a tight grip on the nutsack of youth (excuse my language, ladies). You are younger than any young rocker I know!! Is that what all the aging men say of their rocking peers?
M2 - thanks for another great song. This is a big one in my collection of favorites.

love this one. great lyrics and delivery - especially the BG vox. Love the held-back guitar work at the end. It gives the impression of someone who could really shred if he wanted to but is holding back because he thinks he's too old to get away with it. Kinda works with the theme of your song hehe
