Description:
Ever since I bought my new ST55 condenser mic, I've been looking for more opportunities to record with the instrument with which I first learned to speak - cello. I heard Drak's beautiful and melancoly piece, Ember, when I first came to Macjams - and thought, what a superb cello piece that would make. Tonight, I took a couple of hours to play along with it tonight, finally settling on an approach that I thought suitable to the mood. I recorded 2 cello tracks and would you believe... my C string (the big one) snapped during the 29th measure of the first track. The spirit of the piece urged me to play on regardless and I finished the track without any major de-tuning of the the remaining strings. You can hear the string break and the slight buzzing of the broken string, acting as a sympathetic throughout the rest of the piece. Anyone who plays cello knows this is a $50+ string and my heart sank. My first inclination was to remove the track... but then decided to leave it in the spirit of divine providence. I know that lots of versions have been done of this track... but perhaps this is the first of its kind. I humbly submit it in honour of one of the most endearing characters I have come across on Macjams... someone who is always ready to listen, encourage, advise, and respond... the incomparable Eduard (AKA Drakonis). Enjoy!

oh man, listen to that....god I'm melting. incredible daniel. i'm sending all of my pieces to you for some live cello from now on. I love the improvised feel. just incredible tone and texture from the cello. so glad you left the snapped string sound in there. and the picture is perfectly fitting for the mood you've created here. I've always loved drak's Ember and you've certainly done something mysterious and melancholy with it. Very cool. Well done!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I promised you some cello a while back... and I'll be happy to play on your pieces any time. Looking forward to it!

Daniel, this is awesome! I'm a total nut for cello, and you really poured your soul into this. I anticipated the snap, and in some ways, it brings out even more personal anguish during the performance. And sure, things get a little detuned because of that, but your persistence seems to swell into a lot of power in the end there... I really love the timbre and clean recording, and the sultry style this exudes. Unfortunately you've simply whetted my appetite, and now I MUST do some more cello collab stuff with you... looks like I have to stand in line behind Shay though :-)
I know I shouldn't wish for more, but I must admit that the broken string simply tells me that this could be absolutely stunning without that bit of "interference" in your concentration... perhaps while you wait for me to write a cello concerto, you could do an update? (evil smirk)

It is such a lovely piece and a pleasure to play on... I especially like the subtle modulation towards the middle. Of course, I'll be more than happy to cello stuff with you.... and I promise that I'll do an update version of this in the near future.
Thanks for the opportunity!

That is wonderful. I love that you kept on. I can sympathize with you that you were surprised and shocked when the string broke, yet.. you continued. It is more melancholy and almost religiously spiritual. Mostly, it sounds just as if I was there and you were playing a few feet away. Someday, I would love to see you perform. Thank you. That was well worth your effort. Love it! Thank you. I think Drakonis will be chuffed. :)
LunaTrick
At risk of sounding corney - it is a very spiritual instrument and I love to play it more than any other.
Alannah

Again I am getting a great Tuxedomoon vibe here

LunaTrick
Keep getting those vibes so we can do another one.
BTW - this was my acoustic cello played through the ST55... sounds so much better than the electric cello on "Switch." I'll be sure to use the former for the next tux piece!

cannot describe this. Truly beautiful, and the snapping string (and your continuing to play) adds an almost heartbreaking element. Lovely music, performed with soulfulness and style. This is a magnificent piece of music - truly one of the best I've heard in a long time. Kudos. Peace.

I'm so grateful that you listen to my stuff and comment often. Many thanks!

WOW DANIEL - this is absolutely gorgeous! You're just amazing on that cello. And the string breaking - what is the cosmic significance? Thanks for this - do another one!
LunaTrick
Any chance I can commission a piece from the great Magnatone?

awesome take on Drak's classic. I love that you used the cello on this one, it really adds a whole other dimension. that wood is so haunting. so impressed by your work. great collab.i just looked up and saw that you broke a string, i thought it was just a cool noise in the middle of the song when it happened. expect an email from me.
LunaTrick
I look forward to hearing from you...

This is a great take on the original.
The cello adds that touch of finesse to a brilliant idea.
You didn't seem to do badly with one of the strings breaking.
Take care.

Glad you enjoyed it.... perhaps I'll do something more experimental with it next time!
MidiOrleans
This performance sounds lovely and warm.
Well, a strong pop. I guess John Cage would have loves this chance experience.
MidiOrleans
Sorry correction, Cage may have loved the snap.
LunaTrick
Cage would have supported it.... followed by 5 mins of silence!
EZamor
absolutely beautiful. i've never heard ember sound so touchingly melancholy before. and i agree that the string snapping seems to enhance the mood; making the piece feel even more somber and organic.

I'll have to work it into one of our pieces (the cello, not the break!)

That cello is magic magic magic. As a fellow Emberite I bow before your superior musicianship ... I used a midi cello on mine! Your playing is exquisitely sweet and spiritual and inspired.
And what a pro you are to just keep playing after that string-break. I'm guessing cello strings don't snap that often (and you certainly wouldn't want it anywhere near your eye).
My soul resonates with every note. Thank you.

What beauty.
Merci.

Splendid.
