Survivalist (1)Creepy (26)
Description:
This is what you might call a "character" piece. I wrote it in 1996, but never got a good start at recording it. It was written after Waco, Ruby Ridge and if I recall correctly OKC. It was also around the time that some folks were starting to be alarmist about Y2K. With all of this "domestic" terrorism and survivalist stuff happening in the world one way I decided to come to terms w/ it was to write a song from the POV of one of these people. Please remember though, that I'm just "doing" a (rather dark) character. Style isn't quite metal, but certainly isn't pop, going for a sort of Oingo Boingo feel.

btw - used the "Drums on Demand" sample loops for the chorus and for the ending. I think all the other loops are either stock GB or JPfGB. There are about 3 voice tracks, 1 live guitar track and a live bass track.

Lyrics:
Why don't you come with me,
into my little room.
It's where I feel so safe,
just like a mothers womb.

And the big, bad world outside my door
makes me want to scream "No More!"
What is it that makes me hide?
Will the demons always stay outside?

It must be the government,
you know they've got a plot,
to make us all their slaves
and take every thing we've got

That's why I'm stockpiling.
You know that I'll survive.
If they come to take my guns
they won't take me alive

And the big, bad world outside my door
makes me want to scream "No More!"
What is it that makes me hide?
Will the demons always stay outside?

I'm always watchfull
keep looking for the signs
I've got my shortwave
and my cabin in the pines.

And the big, bad world outside my door
makes me want to scream "No More!"
What is it that makes me hide?
Will the demons always stay outside?
Do you wonder
Why I've brought you here
In a moment
I'll make it all seem clear

You are essential
you're a big part of my plan
It also simple:
You're a woman I'm a man.

Bridge - instrumental solo

Why do you look afraid?
What was that you said?
You think I'm paranoid!?
Little voices in my head?

That's what they all tell me
I thought you were unique.
Why won't you talk to me
I really wish you'd speak.

And the big, bad world outside my door
makes me want to scream "No More!"
What is it that makes me hide?
Will the demons always stay outside?

And the big, bad world outside my door
makes me want to scream "No More!"
What is it that makes me hide?
Are the demons already inside?

Oingo-Elfman indeed! &mdash 02/21/04 - 08:35:31 PM
(I was always a sucker for a mystery)

Nice layers of electronic and organic stuff (the processed and the vocal/guitar)The spooky little voice unders are a swell touch. Use of drums and insertion of drum fills is expertly handled (something I have to work on!) Also, user of doodles and sounds is nicely understated (less is always more in my book). Chaos is okay (track overkill) as long as the idea is to convey chaos and confusion, but I think clarity is of huge importance in creativity. One doesn't have to be so clear that it is boring or we are being smashed over the head with it... just that the ideas aren't all monged together like a poorly blended stew.

this is clear and well crafted. Fine job... I have rambled too much!

I love you.

Clarification from above note --> &mdash 02/21/04 - 08:38:44 PM
I sat at the mac and my daughter (Squirtilda) was logged on, so my comments went in under her name. She's 13. It is pretty likely that she has no familiarity with Oingo Boingo or Danny Elfman... just wanted to make that clear... those are my comments...

and I have rambled again (ACHT!)

LOL &mdash 02/21/04 - 11:40:19 PM
After listening to "The Angry Bee's" I knew that she was 13
so was kind of impressed that she'd even heard of Oingo.
Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you like the balance, I
was tempted to keep adding little fiddly bits here and
there (I really struggled w/ the end) but in the end I pretty
much just stuck to getting the main elements of the song
down.
At one point I intended to pull the vocals out of the
3rd chorus and use it for a solo, but I didn't get that done.
There was also another verse that I cut because it forced
the politics a little too much. I also was't happy w/ the
performace of that part, so I yanked it.

Anyway, I'm the one ramabling now. Thanks, your
comments really make up for the initial 3 I got (w/ no
comment) after about 9 hits.

very cool &mdash 02/21/04 - 11:06:49 PM
i like really like this. reminds me of a few NIN songs. I like the quite vocal parts with breathing underneath. the lyrics are also really good. the synth sounds underneath are very well placed. good work

dark tones.. &mdash 10/29/04 - 09:16:35 PM
are groovey. pretty involved lyrics & message. the chorus
kind of seemed straightforward for such an off-kilter
tune-kept taking me off that windy, wicked little path you
were leading me

Like that whistling synth... &mdash 12/12/04 - 02:44:22 PM
...It really sets the mood behind the verse. The chorus has
impact... but I would have liked to hear all the vocals
pushed to the limit there. The two droning vox to the L &
R are kinda layed back. Whispers are a nice touch.

Nice drums... I think this comp needs a ripping guitar solo
or duel to top it off! Lynard Skynard?

Great use of your voice. Compelling. And nice
accompanying growl guitar. X-Files meets Frank Zappa.
Don't want to contemplate too much, tho, since it is kind
of disturbing. Which means you did a great job.
