Invention #18 (Narration for Pulleys)

Description
Put together this little piece together last night after a long day of writing for a final teaching portfolio coming due this Wednesday. I sat down, plugged in the mandolin into my Tube Screamer, lined it to the volume pedal and then a delay.

I liked the musical curtain that started surfacing, so I hit record and saved some of it. Exploring some of the ideas I'd been learning in my latest lessons, I structured the shell of the experiment around 1-3-5s of a G major scale and began sliding in some C scale patterns to disrupt and counterbalance the earlier sounds. Came out sorta interesting.

I'm starting to get the "Inventions" names/numbers mixed up now that I'm up in the double digits, so I decided to start naming them. As I began composing the piece, my mind's eye drifted to a series of pulleys slowly drifting up and back, suspended from a high ceiling in a corridor - occasionally hitting one another or clanging, but each making a distinct sound as they moved.

Or maybe I was hallucinating.

Another all mandolin piece.

gentle drifts
Very nice effect here... essentially removing the attack and extending just the delay, giving a strange ethereal bell-like sound, I like it! The dreamy quality reminds me a BUNCH of this other Macjammer's piece that I did a YouTube 3D video for, since I had the same vivid mental picture, and had to capture the idea as a video:

Cool piece here, with a nice effect on the mandolin.

pulleys
cool cool cool...this is awesome, perfect for this foggy, overcast day at home. I love this just the way it is - but can also hear so very many different things laying over the top of it, moving in and out of it, coming up from underneath. Do you have any plans to take this further? Great work man, this is very cool stuff.

this is a very cool pulley hallucination. I like pulley hallucinations generally, but this one is exceptional. I just have to believe you, that this is your mandolin. The left to right panning is happening too fast for my ear, making me a little seasick. If it was about half as fast, this would sound perfect to me. I'm a wuss though. This is beautiful!

Food for Thought
I was wondering about those phases, if the panning was happening a little too quickly. You might get your wish - I may go back and revise that little bit to slow it down. It was the default "wandering around" effect in GB that did that.

As far as finished goes, most of these pieces I don't really consider finished, but just the beginnings of little ideas that sound nice to me. If you'd like to finish it, have at it!

And yep, that's all mando, nothing else. I dropped the tone on the TS effect pedal to let the sound expand a bit more and not sound to mandolin-y. But I've been toying with the ideas of sketching a bit on top of this without any real effects. We'll see? I also picked up a violin bow recently to achieve some of these effects, although I didn't use it in this piece.

Thanks to all of yall for your thoughts :)

I was thinking of the assortment of bells
in a mammoth bell tower or pipes in a subterranean cavern. I like it. It is lulling and happy, too. Thanks.

Mandolin, eh?
Very dreamy - that's what comes of putting together a portfolio and then playing music, I guess.

I see the ceiling as a big mirror. Makes the hallucination even more interesting.

Nice ballad
I got here after the lyrics were posted. Great demo track. You use your voice really well, and the emotion shines through. here's a thought - Add the guitar throughout, then, pull back the piano on the Sha la parts.

Sorry-
This is the comment to the next song I listened to, but I hit 'back' instead of submit, or something. I am NOT hallucinating. I AM sane.

Cool ambience...
Would make a great backdrop for instrumental or spoken word. Some of the best things are accidentally found!
