Description:
I'm doing a little spring (autumn) cleaning before the new year. I'm going to be posting songs I have done this year staring in 2009.
I'm going to be posting some of my "B-sides" and demos from the past for the rest of the month.
"Too Many Voices" was posted accidentally by a friend of my because I didn't have a good internet connection at the time. I took it down after a very short while. (Because he wasn't supposed to post it.)
You can rip the production, but I think it's a pretty good and honest song.
I think you will like this.

Lyrics:
Too Many VoicesToo many voices are floating in my head
I don't know which one's me
But I hope you can hear me and what I've said
I know you will free me
And come to me
Talk to me
As I rattle these iron chains
Don't say good-bye to me
And set me free
As I wash away the pain. Don't say good-bye
Don't say good-bye
Trapped in my broken and scattered and shattered brain
It’s tattered with rain
I know you will see a difference
And a side of me
You're not far away...
Find a connection that is fading from far away
Sensing that today
Runs through the circles and the tunnels fueled by gravity
It's up to you to
Find in me
Another way to see
The way you felt before
Just give me a little more
And don't lock the door
You know, I need a little time. Don't say good-bye
Don't say good-bye
Fall in the ocean like a child
In a fantasy, it has come to be
A lot harder for me when we don't make apologies
You're not far away...

Just an Idea but what if you added delay to the far away part insted of singing it out. Its just an idea. I still say we write along the same gerne. One of these days we will have to colab on a song or two.
Steve
lavalamp
Yeah. One day I'd love to collab. Hope you liked it.

Been reading too fast today - thought this said "too many vices" and I got all excited because my favorite saying is that I don't trust anyone without a vice but hey VOICES works too and anyone who is a musician no doubt has a vice lol. But on to the song. The best thing about this one is the vocal arrangement. I love the note progression at the end of the second bar of the verse - great choice! It really sticks with the listener and carries the tune past the initial floyd comparison into more folky, eclectic territory. Love the "trapped in my broken" part - listened a bunch of times but can't tell for sure what instruments are in there - sounds like piano and some kind of acoustic guitar/mandolin. Banjo would sound really cool there too imo.
lavalamp
I have my share of vices, but not too many. Banjo, Yeah. But I don't have one and I can't play one, either.
Thanks for listening.

Like the laid back tune - the chords flow nicely. Your vocal is slightly out of tune in parts. The far away idea is a good one and the echo on the vocal echoes the theme nicely. Can something be tattered by rain? I'm not sure. Good stuff.
lavalamp
I have NEVER claimed to be a singer. But, I agree most of my songs maybe a bit out of tune singing-wise. Should have been, "Tattered by rain", not "with rain". And yes, something can become ragged and or run down by rain?
Hope you liked it anyway.

just keep listening to those voices Dave. One of them is creating good music.
this song just sparkles Dave. spanking guitars. Plus, cool lyrics!
lavalamp
This was posted along with two other songs at the same time and it got overlooked, even by me. So, I decided to take it down some months ago and re-post before year's end.
Glad you liked this. I liked the sound of this and hoped all would enjoy.

I do like it! This is really filled with nice lyrics images, and the arrangement is great. The guitar sound makes me think Cocteau twins somehow (which is a good thing!) and the keys work well, I think. A really nice song. Man, you make a lot of good music! Nicely done. Peace.
lavalamp
...such cool comments. Thanks a bunch Dave.

I like this. I really like the piano rolling around in the back of the chorus. Call me crazy, but I think this would make a really great 80's electropop song. The really sentimental kind like "Forever Young" or something.
lavalamp
You are crazy. Well, you told me to call you that! lol
Electro pop is a genre that I must refer to 5 extra arms. I'll run it by him.
thanks

Good solid song. Great sounds and feel. I like the less polished production, it adds a charm.
I also like the vocal and all it's quirks. I enjoy a good honest vocal rather than a polished tuneful soulless performance anyday...
I'm always interested as to how people lay down the drums patterns. I generally find the loop which fits best. I've started to look deeper into doing my own and I'd be intersted to hear your methods if possible.
Cheers
lavalamp
The drums. Just choose, then tweak them. That's all really.
Cool that you stopped by.

... a real nice lazy feel at the start, then picks up nicely. A great chorus on this, really emotional, i totally connected with the sentiment.
Lovely track
lavalamp
Good to see you back. Glad you stopped by.

really like this dave. the change ups work really well - not easy to pull off. lots of emotion in your vocals, too which is great. this one stirred something up inside me. not many songs can do that. thanks for the stir
lavalamp
Coming from you that's a great compliment. I just try to explore all parts of my own humanity. That's all.
Thanks,

Dave,
you've been in Germany for how long now and your California days are still effecting your head?
This is another song for The Ease album.
Classic Lavalamp.

You've been looking at too many facebook pics. :)

Like you said, Honest.
Just really sensed that honesty and realness in the lyrics and in your voice.
I liked how you wove your guidetone (syth?) throughout your tune. It enhanced the steady bass lines and acted as an anchor to glide your voice on, while your echoey & sparkling guitar added a subtle glisten.
A most enjoyable listen.
lavalamp
The "synth" is just a Yamaha keyboard I use sometimes. I use some of the "String" settings then manipulate it a bit in GB.
Glad you liked it.

soft and hard ware, ha! I do like this one more, likely due to the fact it's not a demo, thanks for redirecting me. I thought singing far away repeatedly sounded fine, but no reason you shouldn't give musichead's idea a try. Toward the end I kinda wanted a little more variation. The ending was OK. I think if you built it up more toward the end, the ending you currently have would work better. That's my biased ears' two cents. I enjoyed this tune. Thanks for sharing.
