Description
For two years, until I was six years old, we lived in Malta. That meant two years without a single tree. Coming back to England astonished me. I remember going to a park with my parents and standing under a huge Cedar of Lebanon staring up in awe at the broad thick branches. When I was eight, like many children, I used to play hide and seek and make camps among the trees with my friends or, when I was older, go off on my own to climb trees and watch birds.
I never wondered what it was like to be a tree until I heard this song in our local folk club on the opening night more than forty years ago. I’ve never heard anyone else sing it- except me. I sing it all the time.
