stepping back from the edge can be a healthy thing.
Been sitting on this for a couple months, not knowing where to go with it... so it is, as it is.

Lyrics:
Hand in hand, we walked that roadThey spoke of things- we were never told
Daylight promised- in the night
Drifting near to the edge.
They called to everyone, come this is the way
Thousands in unison, as scripted in a play
Lifting desires- to an empty throne
Drawing near to the edge
To a pilgrim of the tide
Said, I was here just for the ride
As the doorman asked for my pledge
I stepped back, stepped back from the edge.
Turning away, we took another path
The climb was steep, the die was cast
And as we walked along- we left behind our past
Stepping back from the edge.
Raindrops fell, washed away our tears
What we lost was nothing- more than our fears
And as we dreamed- we fell to sleep
Walking back from the edge.
To a pilgrim of the tide
Said, we were here just for the ride
As the doorman asked for our pledge
We stepped back, stepped back from the edge.

I agree who want to fall down that cliff... Nice piece with great lyric as the music is too me come around the campfire and enjoy BUT please don't fall.
Dadai.2
Trust me, I'm hanging on for dear life... as we sit around the campfire.
thanks for listening and commenting.

You have found the perfect placement for the H2- it sounds clear and balanced. Insightful lyrics about the road less traveled, and as always, the guitar and harp sound great. The art is perfect for this song- where was that taken?
Dadai.2
What a great little recorder. But I had some help via GarageBand and ChannelStrip when it came to the mixing. The lyrics... a lot was going on in me at that time, a couple months ago. I think there a some different levels to meaning on this one now, at least as I have sat on this and reworked the lyrics. Hopefully it's called growth resulting from a little time and reflection. As always much thanks Roxylee.

...you're getting a great blend from the H2 with nice ambience on the guitar...
To me, Jack, your songs succeed because so much of who you are gets in them, and comes across...So even when I'm not one hundred percent sure what a song or a bit of a song means in you, the writer's, mind, something good is still coming across...
You are definitely mining the latter-day, Lanois-era Dylanistic vibe in this one, and I would consider that a very okay place to be... It's simple and it's good...

Thanks Ed for, once again, generous comments. Well, this one does have something of me in it... exactly what? That would take a conversation, a glass of wine, and maybe a nice warm fire (I'm in Chicago right now... 10 degrees). Like a few other songs, this is sort of an internal conversation/observation/stream of thought kind of a thing, and as I wrote in my reply to Roxy, the meaning's been evolving with time. Music? or therapy?
... yes.
As to any Dylan references... well, you gave me a smile. Thanks and...
cheers

first of all. Jack the sound quality is great and open.
even with only a guitar, harmonica and vocal this song sounds so full.
i feel like a lemming running to this excellent tune.
Dadai.2
U2?... me, too.
Seriously Vic thanks. I am surprised at the recording quality of this little H2 recorder... also the Drop D tuning (on both E strings) gave it a sound that seemed to resonate pretty well. I'm glad you liked this one. Just don't follow us lemmings to close to the edge.
cheers,
D

Thank you... from me, me guitar, and me harp! The edge inspires... ;)

.. it's not often I suggest this .. but .. in a way, I
like that 'campfire' vibe .. and I would go for that in the production: like fire crackle and more lo-fi - I think this piece would really lend itself to that.
Enjoyed it very much- I thought you sounded a bit like our own jamorama (on the vocals)... or at least it would
suit him to a T imo (not that your vocals were bad in any way you understand)... lol .. oh oh .. I've gone and
dug myself in haven't I? .. lol
Dadai.2
smores?? ;)
Interesting suggestion apb. I may experiment with that idea. And kudos to jamorama for sounding like me... LOL. No holes dug... Thanks!

This has a reflective quality, and the lyrics are nice and clean, so I can close my eyes and listen. That harmonica is fine. Guitar has just the right reverb, too. I like the conversational quality of your singing. All together, excellent.
Dadai.2
kristyjo. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments. And I'm glad you like the song. I think this is the first time I got this good of guitar sound on a song. Hopefully I'll do it again.
cheers

The sparse arrangement seems to suit the song perfectly. Excellent production. The H2 recorder works like magic - stunning quality from that little gizmo. Your guitar sounds crispy clear.
Also a very good song. Had there been two or three voices blending in, it could easily have been mistaken for a Crosby, Stills, Nash tune.
I think this must be one of the best I have heard from you Jack. Keep 'em coming:)
Dadai.2
It is a nifty little gizmo. Some nice comments you gave me there, Thor. I don't know what to say except a big thank you for listening and it puts a smile on my face to know how you think about this recording.

You do get around... and around... The attic has great acoustics for recording and all the old stuff brings forth some inspiration every now and then. Good to know you like the sound of this tune. Much thanks, uh, ... jack ;)

wow, this is absolutely awesome, Jack...you definitely have a Justin Hayward Nights in White Satin voice...and your voice is as smooth as silk here...the guitar work is beautiful as well as the harmonica
Dadai.2
Glad you like this one. J. Hayward, eh? Now that is a generous compliment. Things seem to come together better than I thought on this song. Very gratifying to read the comments, especially your. Thanks.

You are good. You are doing it! "Stepping Back From The Edge" is good sound and good sentiment. Nice combo of instruments and voice. You have an excellent production quality. No loss of fidelity in the MP3 file. Bravo.
They called to everyone, come this is the way
Thousands in unison, as scripted in a play
Lifting desires- to an empty throne
Drawing near to the edge
Too true. You were wise to step back from the fall. On the other hand, one must strive to keep their edge, take risks, be non-complacent.
Dadai.2
depends on who one is compared to. This song had a little feeling behind it... and a drop D tuning that gave it a lift. Thanks Rich.
Hopefully keeping the edge,
Jack

Jack, there are lots of things to like about this one, starting with the terrific words which set a mood as much as tell a story. I really like the way you've recorded and mixed this - instruments and voice are all clear and sound just about perfect for this style.
For me, this is one of your most enjoyable songs - you sound confident and relaxed, and have written a very nice tune.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

my thanks to you, oh hound of sound. Your crits have helped.
