Description
This song represents the bond I share with an aspiring author, whose characters are waltzing to the cymbals and strings. It represents where I have come in my own music career. It represents the bittersweet dance between two lovers – forever waltzing in the cosmic ballroom of self-discovery.

Beloved
Wow, I really liked this composition Zagar. It' outstanding what you can put together with GB instruments. I have to say that I gave up on those but it really shows that if you put in the effort, you can make them sound awesome. Now for some comments.

Composition of the piece are awesome. I loved the progression and movement of the piece. The instrumentation you chose fit right in. The highs and the lows of the piece were great and everything kept me very interesting. I do, however, feel like the piano was taken over at some point. If that's what you meant to do, then so be it; but sometimes I can't even hear the piano at all. You know me though, I'm a sucker for piano music. It didn't really take away from the piece but it was just something that stuck out.

I really liked the percussion you added; but I think that the song could really use more. The heavy mood you have going would be very well complemented if you put some awesome heavy drums in the background. Huge drums with a sweet rock kit. Granted, GB doesn't have that much in that area. I already hit the limit with Logic's instruments too (heh) but I think you'll be satisfied when you break into the Logic software instrument package.

The high-register violins just sounded rather fake. I know it's a GB instrumet and I can understand it when you say that we're all on a budget; but realistic samples really bring out realism in a song. Hell, I just finally went in on a $700 orchestra package (hurray graduation gifts), but you can definitely see where it's taken me.

I really liked the oboe (bass clarinet?) that you had in there. It put a 'curious' kind of feeling in the background, and I loved the addition. The addition of the horns was also nice. I know that it's difficult to put in the GB horns because some of the samples are crap-for-quality.

Let's see, at some points I was sort of overwhelmed with the stereo field. I felt like everything was panned center or close. Some of the instruments sounded a bit off-center but I didn't get the feeling that each instrument had its own place in th stereo field. I think that may have been why I felt like the piano was being overwhelmed. Try taking each instrument and panning it respective of its position in an orchestra. That will carve out a place for each instrument. If you have no idea what to do that, look up a seating chart for orchestra and you'll see what I mean.

When you do get into Logic you'll see a lot of new plugins. Reverb is going to really really help you out in this area because I get the feeling from this composition that the instruments sound a tad dry. Not so much so that it's terribly noticeable, I think I'm just nitpicking here. Anyways, back to my suggestion. When you get into logic you'll find some awesome reverb plugins, including space designer (awesome) and platinum and gold verb (just as awesome). when you're panning the instruments like an orchestra would sit, think about the hall they play and what it would sound like when you were there. You would here the bass, let's say, from the far right side. You would also (a split second later) here the reflection of that bass from the left side off the hall's wall.

Take this concept and apply it to your reverbs. If you panned your contrabass at say +18 (right), run a bus from that and put your reverb on that bus. Take the bus (just the reverb sound) and pan it basically the opposite like it was the sound reflecting off of the left wall. I usually put mine straight opposite minus one (so -17 to the left on +18). Sometimes I adjust it thinking on what kind of a hall the instruments are playing in. You can always just fool around with it as you like.

So you've got your 2-D stereo spread, let's add some 3-dimensional depth here. Think about the setup in an orchestra and how it relates again. The instruments in the front you hear a split second (or even less) than those in the back. You can start to reflect this in your composition by placing sample delay on the instruments that would "be in the back." This can also apply to regular setups (the drums in the back would make it to the listener's ears a bit later than guitar or vocals up front). You just want to make your listener feel like it's really being played. I usually use the Logic Sample Delay and do about 200 samples, maybe less. You can't really tell the difference up front; however, it sort of tricks the ears into thinking the instruments are playing in a 3-D space.

That's the few comments I can think of now. You're composition skills are really amazing, the technical stuff is definitely where you'll find yourself challenged.

I really enjoyed this piece, you did a great job on it. You'll be amazed with what Logic has to offer; I don't think I'll be talking much to you since it's a bit overwhelming. Find SFLogicNinja on youtube and definitely watch his tutorials. MacProVideo also has some sweet ones that speed up learning (you gotta pay - it's REALLY worth it tho). Also check out the forums, especially LogicProHelp. Good luck with everything!

Holy crap long comment...

Also, would you mind checking my other composition that I recently uploaded. It's called Dungeon of Deceit and it's got some great examples of some really heavy drums. I uploaded that first then my other song and I sort of just forgot that it makes the last one only visible in the recent uploads list. Ah well. Thanks in advance.

Whew!
Yeah, intense feedback. Thanks for taking the time to write all that for me. It'll prove useful sooner or later. Thing is, like you said, the fake quality of my instruments is sort of a demoralizing thing to point out as I won't do anything about it until I officially pop open that box and migrate to Logic. Haha. I'm glad you liked the composition. The orchestral seating chart is something I'll look into. Fascinating how we strive to make our digital stuff sound real... Hmmm.

Well, for now I'm taking a break from music to continue brainstorming for a new novel. We'll see what happens. As for you, I'm looking forward to the powerful new pieces you come up with. I hope you can take ground in the soundtrack industry, as I'd like to go there too at some point. I can sorta... continue getting pointers from you. lol

Godspeed. Thanks again.
