An old song that I originally posted on MJ back in 2006 (in my old incarnation). Completely re-recorded in a more intimate style.

Lyrics:
If I was your loverI would hold you in my arms
Keep you safe from evil
I'd be your lucky charm
If I was your brother
I'd defend you to the end
Walk with you into the desert
Stand upon the edge
If I was a singer
I would write you a song
Teach you all the chords and notes
And have you sing along
If this was a lullaby
I'd sing you to sleep
And like an angel on your shoulder
I'd show you how to weep
I'm new to you
And if you wanna know what you got
You're gonna have to take a bite
If I was your priest
I'd say a prayer for you
I'd show you God's greatness
The plans He has for you
If I was a bird
I'd fly into the sky
...
I'd show you how to die
Hand in hand
Down to the river
On that river's shore
I dived into the water
Made you beg for more
I''m new to you...
If I was a guitar
I'd have a broken string
My shiny voice is shattered
But you still hear what I sing
...
What I sing

production is GREAT! Lo-Fi but at the same time fills the room nicely. Played this first time on the stereo - just happened to have the laptop plugged in - and man, sounds like Springsteen circa Nebraska. Cool! Nice understated playing/singing, everything. Like the whole "wish I was" concept, gives the lyrics a 70's flower folk feel. This is my new Paddy fave and will move to the top of the playlist in my ipod.

...first you start with the Jayhawks and now it's Bruce. You know how to praise me man! Thanks for the very kind words. I love this song, the words are probably my best ever. It is a very simple arrangement which seems to suit it best.
Glad you liked it.

heartfelt... good melody and singing... like the harmonica a lot.
only quibble: singing and harmonica at same time threw me off a bit as I was imagining one person doing the song in a "live" kind of way...

I ummed and aahed about the harmonica bits forever and a day. I just love the sound of it so I left it all in. When I perform it live though, that might prove difficult!!
