Description:
For the second Sunday in Advent. This is a French Carol. I'm using the basic harmonies from 'The English Hymnal, 1906'. The arrangement is for guitar, clarinet and bassoon. This is all software instruments. The countermelody is my own composition, and my husband enjoys the challenge of playing it. I have a slow arpeggiated continuo-type part, and the clarinet plays an echo part, then the melody line when the bassoon counter-melody kicks in. Happy Advent!
Lyrics:
Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand. Ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in His hand,
Christ out God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand.

Guitar with classical instruments is really my favorite thing to play, right now. My voice has turned 'old' sounding in the last three years, so I'm more into instrumental now than ever before. I'm glad you are enjoying those sounds!

...your restrained arrangement is just perfect. Your sense of counterpoint is perfect. I just love the clarinet especially, and the "extras" from the bassoon add such delicate and tasty effect...I am always thinking of places to TAKE a tune and wonder if you'd consider a key change UP on your last pass with an accompanying transitional measure or two. Just a thought. I know you are saving all of these delicate arrangements. They would make a lovely CD someday.
Peace.

Thanks for the suggestions. They're good ones. My son, the clarinetist for the group, was a little hesitant about playing music outside of his comfort zone for a performance, so these current arrangements stay between one flat and two sharps, so the guitar can also 'sing' in a comfortable key for myself. (The joys of playing piano for my day job means the muscles I've developed to have strong, curved fingers for piano do me no good for barre chords on guitar, and I hate the capo.) I'm re-amazed at how many disparate priorities there have to be for arranging for instruments and voices of varying competency levels for people who aren't paid to play. But it's a good, challenging puzzle to fit together, and really satisfying when it all works.

So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know.

What a wonderful arrangement KJ!

These arrangements are meant to be simple and recognizable, since they're original purpose is as part of the worship service at our church. Still, it is fun to add a bit of ornamentation and timbral variation. I'm glad you got to listen!

I also really appreciate the musical insights and history you often share.

I enjoy knowing more about the history of a song, so I'm glad you enjoy that, too.

this type of music. Love the clarity of it, the simplicity is quite beautiful, somber, reflective and the list goes on. Has a nice almost three wise-men feel to it.
This to me is one of your best because everything thing seems so melodic. Love how musically antique it is. Love that type of feel. One of the best uploaded here of that style I think.
Hope you do more of this type!
Way to Go!

in this style this year - I may post a couple more before Christmas. I'm glad you picked up the idea that the counter melody was its own melody line, too. My husband plays that very nicely, with some great dynamic expressiveness. Thanks for commenting!

I love the power chord at 1:37, it just sets up the rest of the arrangement in a more aggressive state. Great job! I enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing and the DL.

This is a fairly popular download, so I'm glad it's becoming part of some holiday collection playlists. It's cool that you noticed the open chords - I used them because of some ambivalence on my part about whether I wanted a major or minor sound, but I'll listen for that 'set up' aspect, too. Thanks for noticing & commenting!

sure going on my M.J.'s holiday cd here at home. Thanks for the song and the short history lesson.
Be well, Russ

And the capture is stunning. Each instrument came off beautifully. The only crit I would offer is that it felt a bit dry, meaning I felt that the chamber instrumentation lacked the chamber. The slight reverb that would warm and envelope the listener.
Really an amazing composition.

The counterpoint is just fantastic. I would say publisher-worthy. Beautifully produced and performed. A delight!
