Description:
Motorcycle touring (like life) is circular. No matter where or how far your travels take you, it’s ultimately all a big loop back to home base. In my years of riding, I’ve returned to favorite places, re-ridden many beautiful highways and byways, and revisited some of the most spectacular mountain ranges of the lower 48 states. It is all an endless cycle of circles. This song is about moving along that meridian and returning finally to the beginning - or back to the future - depending on one’s perspective. Cycles of travel, of movement, of beginnings and endings, cycles of life. We are constantly propelled forward, as we wind around the meridians of our particular adventures. This just happens to be mine.
A quick story about the cover art: The photo, with the famous Grand Teton peaks in the background, was snapped on the fly, on a bike trip last summer. As cool as the picture might make that day of riding appear, it was actually the worst of the entire season. So many things were going wrong, that it has become forever known as “The Day of the Plagues”. We hit terrible and unexpected (as in, not listed on the state website) construction where the pavement virtually disappeared for miles– a notable hazard for bikers. Jackson Hole was a hot bed of activity, so there was lots of tourist traffic that slowed us to a crawl on an unbearably hot day. We stopped for lunch at a beautiful park in the mountains only to be attacked by gigantic mosquitoes, biting flies, and one unidentified species of something that resembled a flying tarantula - and quickly decided it was wiser to flee than to eat. There was an unfortunate miscommunication with the GPS (enough said about that one). In the afternoon we got blown into the next county and pelted by the hail of an “isolated thunderstorm” (they seemed to be isolated always, in our exact location on the road). And the day of plagues was capped off at a hotel that night whose internet service was mostly inoperable, making everything about planning around weather for the next morning quite challenging. The one high point really WAS this photo, which, in spite of the realities of that day, perfectly captures the feeling of “Meridian Cycle”.
Many thanks to drakonis (eduard) and kassia (shay) for some very helpful feedback during the journey of this song making, and general assistance in trying to better avoid the plague of the kitchen sink disease. Also, very special thanks to the awesome posse. Hope you enjoy my little musical doodle.

A remarkable piano piece that conjures up images of sleigh rides and ice skating
Very well done, luv!
davisamerica
in more ways than one .. :-] ! This lovely karen and was so worth waiting for !
PrototypeEightyOne
very peaceful calming soothing song. nice build up, i like how it rises then falls right back. Do you play the piano yourself? the piano in this was very well played..also liked the wardrum snare reminiscant of toy soldier that came in around 3/4. anyways very nice!
MarkHolbrook
melody and master piece of work from you Karen!
Once again I hear the kitchen sink in the works but it like all your other kitchen sinks... seems to fit perfectly!!! :)
All kidding aside this has just the right amount of fill and never does the fill over take the main melody. Gorgeous, beautiful, hypnotic sort of too!
Thank you Karen! Thank you!
paul f. page
...the rush of wind with such an insistent 6/8 meter throughout, Karen. The wide-open spaces of the road with rubber slamming along the miles is so well represented here...Beautiful playing and oh what a glorious finale (double crescendo on the black keys!!! as my dad used to describe such a conclusion). You are fast approaching a biker's CD. I can see sales skyrocketing amongst the road warriors.
Peace.
Paul

That was a beautiful .. the sound of the piano is so blended with the background ... very interesting piece...
Outtaorbit
When it starts, it reminds me of the sea and I'm watching the ship leaving for lands unknown, her sails fill with the wind that carries us all on our circular journey.
Parichayaka
A musical journey in itself. Especially enjoy the piano playing - has a playful sweetness and is perfect for telling your story. Impressed by your use of the orchestral instruments and percussion as well. Uplifting and inspiring with a sense of adventure...wonderful! Oh, and if you hadn't given us that awesome description of your trip, called it a 'Christmas something something' and put a big smiling photo of Santa, that would have been perfect too!

top notch indeed. Love how flowing and majestic this is.
Your a great blessing to MJ without a doubt! Both in sound and in deed!
A real pleasure to listen to ! This no musical doodle.
A musical masterpiece ! Your so humble !
drakonis
The opening reminds me a bit of Beethoven's Pastorale symphony :-) Your signature themes, and clinks and bells and other percussive stuff through here is wonderfully placed... despite the myriad instruments here and there, I think you avoided KSA here just fine. Really love the builds and crescendos in this. The choir is a cool touch, and tastefully done. The bongos still make me smirk, but in a good way. Strings sound great now, as do the horns, awesome job! Another for my KarenKollection.

and a fantastic piece of music.
It does evoke a constant movement. Light and shade and the Day of Plagues never makes itself known.
I've had days like that on the bike but in the end the good always outweighs the bad :-)
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

Karen this is fabulous. A thrilling, epic circle of sound and texture. There is so much movement in the piece - both in the composition and in the way you orchestrated it, bringing instruments and themes in and out through the entire piece. You've created a beautiful song that swirls all around me and sweeps me along with you. I especially love all the little call and response parts between different instruments - you used panning especially well in this to help create a wonderful fullness of sound. Great job!
Bubowski
Love the themes and playing. The orchestration is very good, love the inclusion of the recorder to give it an earthbound feel. Lot's of good work and inspiration here!

should always sound like BORN TO BE WILD....or not
this sounds fantastic on the bose buds....( my head is about 3/4 mile across)...fantastic mixing and stereo balance....
you have a fantastic ear for sounds and a skill to put them together that belies your amateur status, not to mention that this is what, your fifth recording?? pretty special.
I keep waiting for the spot where the guitar would come in...but alas...this piece needs me not.
great stuff karen....on every level.

The Beach Boys' "I Get Around" remains my favorite out-and-about touring song, your musical travelogues offer far more majesty and inspiration.
Indeed, you have a very majestic musical style. Just beautiful. ;)

leather gloves and a beautiful melody tell the tale of dusty travels. this is really pretty. nicely laid out, good sounds and not a hint of kitchen sink disease. impressed with your drum work too, i knew you could score, but wasn't aware of your skills as a "drummer." great track Karen, happy to listen.

Excellent as usual, keep up the stellar work...

What a wonderful warm sound.... Nice melody... I like how it's build up.... Played with feelings....

Love the thought behind this piece (description). I like that about life. This piece is beautiful. It is pretty amazing what you can do with Midi. How awesome would it be if you were able to have this performed by an entire live orchestra? Conduct it? If it were my composition I think I'd rather just sit back and listen to it... both would be very cool experiences. Good stuff here =)

And, I must say, a nice change of pace for these ears. Grand listening and grander still as it progresses. Kind of like touring our country (& life)... more breath taking as you go along. Enjoyable and well done composition/performance Maggie... ;)

what a perfectly lovely piece! the percussion really helps make the compassionate composition come alive. this is well worth the wait.

.. breathtaking piece: lots of motion, weaving and cycling along, youthful energetic & playful themes and exuberance .. kinda made me think cinematic soundtrack: positive ending vide, early morning scene, of Disney non-animated film with some kid happily bike riding their way through the sunny USA suburbs .. perhaps chucking a newspaper casually as
they went(?) ..slight tension as the clock strikes and
signals it's time to press on to school.
One tiny nit: something struck me odd with the final crescendo ..first works seemlessly from cresecendo to fluid pattern .. not sure what it was .. hmm ..wether it wasn't enough gap before returning .. as it sounded
kinda final ..short gap ..then flows again.. lovely formed ending too.
I'd only suggest a smoother 'crescendo to fluid next bit' at the end (04:45).. like you did after the first cresendo (03:00)
Great performance, writing, mix and orchestration (percussion etc). Deservedly high praise.
Diviner
Lovely full piece of music that conjures being free and full of roaming spirit. Very good, might have to listen to this track before going on any adventures. Nice one.

know what to say. Some of us make music. others like yourself create a masterpiece. Thank you so much.
Be well, Russ
HenriROGERsoloandbands
I read the description of the tune before listening .
Everything went wrong on this trip but the music you made is not showing it at all .
I find this interesting because music says a lot without words .
Without the description, this music would sound beautifull but it would be impossible to understand what was behind it in real .
What I want to say is that it is an even more beautifull music when you know that what was lived in real was not beautifull :-)
craft
this is beautiful.. full of life and emotions.. I love it and my wife loves it too..

for this piece. Beautifully written with gentle and positive direction. It paints many different pictures for different people I imagine, but I see a lone heroic Spitfire climbing through the clouds up and up.
Lovely,

the song seems to go off without a hitch. trouble free and what a great crescendo.

and in Love......with your skilled composition.
Loved your written description. It helped me to imagine, a wonderous ride, with a ridemaster who along the way, points out, not only the subtleties of the ride, but of life too, also described in your music.
You are blessed and I feel lucky to have made your musical acquaintance.

I could tell before I listened that I'd like this, what with the scads of fans, the favorite composer, the detailed description and the title. I was pleasantly surprised with the little choral bits, the orchestral bells and the sweet coda. I can already hear your signature style in the ever-moving melody line, the melody doubled by wind instruments and the full percussion parts. A pleasant journey indeed.
crazykeyman
First let me commend you on the flute part. Many keyboardist like to use the flute sound but tend to play it like just another keyboard sound. Your flute was very convincing. There are two kinds on instrumentals that I like. Instrumentals that give you a feeling of movement and instrumentals that I picture the accompanying movie. This song does both rather well. Your music has encouraged me to try using more of the orchestral percussion. This music is so exhilirating I can feel the wind blowing through my hair.
jiguma
When I listen to your compositions and read your stories I WANT A BIKE ...... NOW!
Almost without fail, your music reminds me of some of the longer rides I took when I was (much) younger. Oh well, the Vespa got re-registered yesterday, so at least I have 2 wheels :)
Lovely writing and really well produced. You sure know how to do "grand" don't you!
Cheers from Oz,

Just a sensational, visual piece here. Visual in the sense that it paints a mental picture the American landscape.
Long, have we waited. Masterful.

Comes in Featherlight and then lovely key change to build. Then the lovely quiet middle showing your piano virtuosity. You've obviously worked hard on a stunning arrangement. Karen, it's a masterpiece and I bow to you and smile all the way up to my ears which are glued to my headphones for another listen!
YEAH!

I really like this. 10.00! Beautifully arranged and produced. Almost a holiday feel...maybe because its that time of year, but also the picture puts you in a certain mood of awe and grandeur.

lovely - as always

You can almost hear the flying tarantula...
How in the world did you meridianize yourself into such a pastoral travelscape from potholes, pests and plagues?
Hey, I'm listening tonight apart from headphones, and I'm really aware of some stuff you've got going in terms of the stereo panning...

Touring is only a fantasy for me; my 150cc gets me to work in the good weather, and that's about it. Like Neil says, at least it's two wheels. This piece is really well put together, would love to see a motorcycle video to this; a relaxing, touring video. The piano playing is my favorite part of this, but all together this is a beautiful composition, worthy of majestic vistas and welcoming forests. Great job.

Tarantula mosquitos be damned! I want a motorcycle!!!
Love the theme. Keeps coming up. Part of the cycle. It's all about cycles...
There's a reason so many people come to visit when you post a song, Karen...
Thanks for the download.

would love to hear this with live orchestra...
i think it is cinematic.

The story about the photo really puts the music in perspective. I can just see all the events unfolding as you described. Some quite funny, others not.
Well performed piece. The production was outstanding.
Thanks for sharing.

any chance of vocals? I really liked the feel and the flow.Great piano part!!!
sonnyjim
Beautiful job of orchestrating (not to mention mixing) this. A very beautiful, majestic piece.
I may be alone in my appreciation of the way those midi sounds (especially the brass) get all synthy and artificial sounding, sort of like post-'Switched On Bach' Wendy Carlos; but I've said it now, and I feel much better! More, please.

...can really see /feel how inspiring Your bikerides are... ! This is so grand...Grandious ! !
tx for sharing such a GEM (!) : )

This is a wonderful piece, filled with so many terrific elements, like a series of movements carrying the listener on and upwards. I think the music perfectly reflects the concept of circles and cycle and the returning to the beginning that is the essence of all truly epic journeys. The orchestration and arrangement are stunning, and you have really done a good job of restraint, letting the power of the themes build up themselves and naturally to the climax. Magnificent stuff. Kudos, Karen. This is excellent. Nicely done. Peace.
LunaTrick
I love the metre here.... it really keeps things moving despite the lush textures. I also think the dynamics are very subtle and clever... with crescendos in just the right places. The production is lush... as well as the tonal spectrum. Has anyone told you that there's a touch of Mike Oldfield in your work... his Incantations period particularly? I say this because of your folktune sensibility, your episodic melodies, and slight minimalist piano comping (common to Philip Glass also!). Your pieces are epic and contain so much work.... I do hope you will offer a CD at some point. Excellent work Karen!
Jarvoid
What is this I hear about you having a full blown orchestra lurking in your kitchen sink that you cart around with you everywhere you go on your motorbike making magnificent music despite the woes of weather and circumstance that have plagued you (your words)upon this odyssey.?Hmmmm?

:) Good job mag!

just too beautiful..Circle circle life is alright and here your playin it tonight thanks.. I remember now everything!

I think it conjures up one of those gazing riding/driving days as you head through, well from the songs point of view, a beautiful day. I really enjoyed this. It was down very well.

The potentials are endless. An incredible journey from you to my ears and then quickly to the back of mind. I put on my boots and move through the snowfields. I think of home, and many homes and places and trails to them all...and then home again. Brilliant, just brilliant.
Right around the middle of the song when it really takes off... simply exquisite. If I could compose so eloquently as you Id be a much much happier person :)
Thank you for sharing this and the lovely backstory.
Savage_Beast
I enjoyed this piece.

karen - another lovely piece from you - this has real character, a sense of fun, and also a feel of little snowflakes falling to earth. You are a treasure!

of your skill...
Your music always has a sense of joy and cellebration.
It´s twice as hard to make something joyous than dark music because, you know, the dark is everywhere and is thick, sticky and very easy to grab a handful and mold it.
But, at least for me, happiness is something ethereal, something impossible to contemplate or reproduce. It was meant to be felt...
But you can isolate rays of light and make the birds stop in the middle of their flights...
Sounds like the gates of another world are opening.
;-)
chronologic
I sense the movement and the cycling (circling) for sure. I sense the wanderings and the returning home. The finale kind of strikes me, I guess that's what it feels like when your tires finally hit the pavement in front of your home. It's really a hard hit after a long journey! I have never felt safe on two wheels really, which is why motor bike riding is something I have avoided (probably for the best). But when I was 18 myself and two friends skipped the second half of our senior year (we had completed the coursework early) and had somebody drop us and our pedal bikes off at some hotel on the Florida border. We pedaled the next month until we arrived at Kittery Maine. That was MY big ride. We didn't take music actually so we could be alert and in touch but the song that used to pound in my head was Sheryl Crow... "No one said it would be easy, no one said it would be this hard, no one said it would be easy, but no one thought we'd come this far". That one probably has more meaning on a pedal bike! Meridian Cycle would have been a KILLER soundtrack for that ride!! It does capture the rhythmic cadence of it. Thanks for sharing your work!
Scott Carmichael
in the truest sense of the word... Goodness... Cycling has come quite a way from Hells Angels, if this refects the true nature of it... this sounds so noble and epic... beautiful... stunning
you are sooo gifted...
and look at the fans 66... I'll make it 67

Your stuff is always so inspirational. Seriously you should be writing soundtracks for a living or something. Imagine a full orchestra at your disposal. Love the conga section in this and that big swell near the end is breathtaking. Really great, Karen. Thanks

Everything you create is beautiful, and I can think of nothing that is more beautiful than this. It seems like there is more 'production' in this one than I remember from your other works, by which I mean the orchestration, but I must say you do a fantastic job there too. Really tastefully done, never overblown, just perfect!

You undertook an important project and put your soul into it. The way this song builds is truly masterful. It's some of the best atmospheric flow I've ever heard. I listened as I read your story of the bike trip. What an ordeal... And what a payoff! This kind of music is what touches my heart most, where a principle of life gets projected and unfolded. Beautifully done.

I now am completely convinced of your wonderful spirit. That you can end up using the photo from the Day of Plagues to illustrate this happy, buoyant, uplifting music means that you remember the good parts of life most of all. FLYING TARANTULAS? Thanks for that, Karen. I think you should write a Flying Tarantulas song for Halloween, either that or that should be the name of your motorcycle gang. Think of the cool jackets.
I think you did a great job of getting the instruments to sound realistic on this (which is one of my favorite of your compositions, by the way) which I know takes a lot of patience and skill. Love it. --L

Have them play it at an outdoor concert. The music just calls for that much space. Delightful ride through this one Karen, fresh, light, joyous and open. I won't begin to comment on the orchestration other than to say bravissimo!

Be well,
