Description:
I had this nasty guitar riff that I thought would be perfect for one of those Van Halen type dirty minded high school girl tunes, you've seen the video, twenty-something supermodel dressed in pigtails and a plaid skirt as the new girl in school, all the boys in their stonewashed levi jackets run into things when she walks by, Eddie and Dave leering through the classroom windows. Anyway the tune came together but never seemed finished. So then Bob asked if I had anything lying around that we could collab on and I thought the attitude of this tune would be perfect for him. He took it and right away added a killer VH synth riff and I knew we were onto something. The rest is as they say history, or her story since this is after all a song about a girl. And it's not so dirty minded after all, since everything i write seems to end up kind of sweet and wistful no matter what. But I tried.

Lyrics:
seems like such a long timesince afternoon study hall
but when i close my eyes
i can see you walking down the hall
you're carrying your books
you're chewing on a pencil
you're giving me that look
it's more than i can handle
what's on your hi fi baby
are you playing our song tonight?
and if i called you could i hear it
coming through the telephone lines?
seems like such a long time
since i picked you up on friday night
but if i close my eyes
i can see you in your mom's porch light
you're waiting for a kiss
i'm working on my courage
we've been thinking all night 'bout this
and now we're really nervous
what's on your hi fi baby
are you playing our song tonight?
and if i called you could i hear it
coming through the telephone lines?

well this cool little rocker .... very nice gents
tempie
thanks man, if every song I ever write can be described as "a cool little rocker" then i can die happy!
five_extra_arms
I just needed a Tempie Army patch for my jacket and I couldn't find one on ebay.
This was a really cool song from the very start and I was excited to get my extra arms on it. As usual, I could see the video immediately when I first hit play. I really connected to his concept of this tune and we both agreed it needed a Van Halen-like lead so I spent the next few hours listening to Van Halen (pre Hagar) for inspiration. As you can guess, the next few hours rocked.
Anyone know which VH song inspired the riff?
My favorite verse is
You're waiting for a kiss
I'm working on my courage
We've been thinking all night 'bout this
And now we're really nervous
Clever lyrics and a total blast to work on.
Thanks for involving me in this rockin' tune.
Bob

You are the tempie army Sergeant at Arms. And hell on wheels with a synthesizer. Thank YOU.
Relic67
great song guys. the fat sounding synthesizer at the end is fantastic.
nice catchy chorus with super backing vocals.
where do I write for my tempie army membership?
looking forward to my badge, decals etc.
tempie
if you join now you get the tempie army kit including two tempie sweatbands, a tempie army patch, x-ray glasses and a 5 X arms action hero with kung fu grip. put two dollars in an envelope and mail to...

David Lee sings some stunningly stupid lyrics but he's always had GREAT teen attitude...so I tried to lose the lyrics and keep the attitude. Don't have his range though...:) Glad you liked it and thanks for the listen!
five_extra_arms
You might not have his range but I hear you can kick your foot over your head AND do a split!
Let's not take this any further please.... I know where it could head.
tempie
that's funny because i was in a band once that played VH cover tunes and they wanted me to do this DLR flip over the guitar player...even at fifteen i wasn't dumb enough to try that in front of an audience...i quit and found a Tom Petty cover band.
five_extra_arms
Who'da thought that the dudes in the Tom Petty cover band would make you bite the head off of a bat?
What a bunch of weirdos.
michael2
a collab from 2 of my fave MJs, you guys will never grow old. the description of the video almost made me pee my pants. the chorus lyrics are genius, really liking this. make sme really happy that you guys are both so able to channel your inner teenager and put it to such good use. great track.
tempie
the best thing about channeling high school at ... well, over 20 (!) is that you tell a much better story (stealing that phrase from Bob)...you get to remember it in an idealized way, with the benefit of having already done it - which is how pop sees everything and why i like it so much.
five_extra_arms
LOL!!!
That was good!
Thanks Michael. You're too kind to a couple of pranksters who probably tee-peed your yard in high school.
HolleyHall
of the lead singer in Meat loaf! like your sound! its your own! great concept going on here! LOVE it! Holley
tempie
since i've got a story for everything have to tell you that i had rehearsal space next door to meatloaf's parents old house when i lived in pennsylvania for a time...so maybe it rubbed off! and of course Paradise by the Dashboard Lights is as classic high school as it gets. Glad you liked the song!! now i need a motorcycle and a tempie army helmet.....
Vic Holman
..... that the two of you were not the type to hide out in the audio/visual closet or meeting in the chemistry class after hours for chess club.
rock music and chasing girls, that's what high school was about.
tempie
actually, the audio/visual closet was a great place to take girls...

This works so well together. I want to be in the Tempie Army. Just give me a few minutes to figure out a satanic acronym. Perhaps I should call Tipper Gore. I'm sure we could dream some nonsense up.
Bob-At one part in the song I was hearing something that sounded as if it were inspired from their cover of "Dancing in the Street". The Buzzy synth lead reminds me of "Why Can't this Be Love?", which should be disqualified because it's Hagar -era. I'm at a loss.
Anyway, this is a lot of fun. I'm kind of sad that video doesn't exist. Remember that "Girlschool" video? Not Van Halen, but extremely awesome just the same.
tempie
Tantric Enigmatic Moonies Propose Infernal Eternity?
Best I could do on the fly...but we are counting on some kind of blacklisting to sell records, you bet.
Glad you liked the tune! You are an honory member of the Tempie Army...picturing lennon with that chinese army cap of his sporting a tempie army patch...
lengold
collaboration. Great song/lyrics and really great mix of synths and guitars. Really enjoyed the listen.
Cheers
Len
tempie
thanks man i'm glad you liked it!
five_extra_arms
My lead starts at 2:16 and I can see Eddie ripping it to pieces in this video from circa 1982.....
The VH song starts out with this riff as the intro...
Come on guys, you have to figure this one out. I didn't change a note!!
tempie
the VH riff is not necessarily a GUITAR riff...
five_extra_arms
I wanted to give them little baby hints and you've practically sang them the song!
(let's see if anyone can guess it)
tempie
my first tactical error as general of the tempie army! i'm going to be scrubbing latrines for a week!
five_extra_arms
Who am I to question the general?
You're the one with the patch, I'm just grunt!
Pete_NB
I want to join the army! I hear they have guitar-shaped flamethrowers and stay up late.
Cool take on genre that died with my teenage years...
tempie
guitar shaped flamethrowers are just the BEGINNING...
five_extra_arms
Hey man, we might have to pump out some merch for these hungry fans!
It would make a great t-shirt!
five_extra_arms
It's be great if the fans wore shirts that were spelled right, or is the "spelt right"?
Maybe an edition of mispelt shirts is what the kids want?
tempie
I just keep imagining a camo nylon/velcro wallet with the tempie army logo...
lavalamp
...The Tempie Army?
Both of you- One of your best.
Dave
tempie
thanks man it was good, good fun
five_extra_arms
Hey Dave,
Didn't you ask Tempie if he was me or something? I think I asked you once if Tempie was your kid brother. Is it possible we all are one person with 3 (or more) separate identities?
Thanks 'Dave'
Diviner
Really good track, love the guitar and synths. The chorus is fantastic and the lyrics are brilliant. Cool imagery you created as well :-).
tempie
thanks man I went out and checked out your MJ playlist and you've got some cool stuff out there too...i'm going to make my way through it today while I work.
Re-al
Great collab - you would think you guys were in the same place at the same time. Certainly in the same zone - as cool as it gets. Lots of swagger, lots of glam and full of bravado. Nice synth sounds, great lyrics and vocal delivery.
tempie
swagger, glam and bravado - I like it!! might use that quote some time...
Thanks for the listen man, glad you liked it
The Infinites
Let's see - hmmmm....
"...Bob who aside from being an all around cool dude is one of the most generous human beings you'll ever meet".
I agree - And funny!! I want to see you both 'live' in NYC next year. Girls in pencil skirts with dirty books with high school riffs?!
AM I getting it right?
Guys - great work; I hope this is the first of many. That 'Earl' thang strikes again, so much 'tood', heh heh!
Love it! DL'd & right into the 'black box'...(Bob - I know you have one; I've seen it!)
T - great story telling in the words and the delivery.
Cheers guys!
Jim

NYC..hmmm. Bob would have to drive the tour bus. The tempie horse hauler will not function above the manson-nixon line and I do not drive in any city let alone N.Y.C.
glad you liked the tune - and the tude!
five_extra_arms
Yeah man - I'll drive the bus while the rock star sits in the back with his groupies telling him how cool his songs are and how great his Tempie Army patch is......
I'm always the bus driver!
NYC - are we still on for end of April/May? This party could get out of hand. I love it!
PaddyNavinCaryatid
Pure Tempie rockin' - love it. Terrific vox. Reminds me of Lee Roth at his most hideously addictive, but with a modern bent.
Keep on rockin'
