Description:
This is a collab with Petra Boren, an extremely talented Swedish singer/songwriter. We wanted to do another collab together (this is our third), so she sent me a beautiful song called 'But Now..' with her harmonizing vocals accompanied by her solitary acoustic guitar. I've always wanted to do a dark/beautiful bjork type thing with her so I added a bunch of other stuff and this is the result. For more of Petra go here.

Lyrics:
I don't know ifI am the one in your dream
I don't know if I am..
and if you need
but now..
it feels like I could die
I don't know if you
feel this pain in your heart
I don't know if you..
but if you do..
but now..
it feels like I could die
I don't know if I am the one for you
I don't know if you will..
but if you do..
but now..
it feels like I could die
ah ah..

Feter
this is deep ...the synth sound add to the singing
and the delicate guitar a real feeling ..the guitars
set of you both are terrific ..I wish more character
to the bass ..and controling the drums volumes ...!
she s a wonderful singer indeed ...good job ..thnx
alot for sharing !!!
rsorensen
thanks feter. maybe i should have sat on this one longer. i mixed it with the headphones and listening back now (open air) I'm hearing what you mean! Thanks for the input.
michael2
really like what you did with her song, that synth part is so simple and so perfect. petra has a really sweet voice too. nice collab. yuo guys should do some more.
rsorensen
thanks michael. what she initially sent me was beautiful alone, so I didnt want to complicate it too much. That said, sounds like I'll need to 'demud' it a little. thanks for listening. I'm sure we'll do more
magnatone
it IS Bjork-like! What a cool collab - i love how the vocals blend together, and the guitar is perfecto! Nice work you two!
rsorensen
thanks karen. she did a great job harmonizng on this one. especially when she hits the highs!

Really cool track. I would say it sounds more like Flunk then Bjork, however the Scandinavian vibe is there and it gives this track a very etheral, northern lights feel. Cool track Ridd, dark and enjoyed.
rsorensen
not familiar with Flunk but I'll check em out. Thanks for listening and commenting

Just the kind of thing I really dig. I am not sure about the bass sound. It really is sort of a muffled blanket of sound and muddies up the groove. It sounds like there should be a way to clean it up and give it a bit more definition. Perhaps that is the effect you are going for but it's not sitting well with me. Maybe this is what Feter is referring to in comment, and so I'm not alone... it could be worth revisiting since I think it's just a little thing.
rsorensen
yeah you're right it does get a little muddy when the mulit reverb'd kick starts up. definitely worth a revisit. thanks for the feedback, Jim

a cool and different song and what a great build and climax near the end. too, cool.
rsorensen
thanks vic. i was sent a great track to work with. It's so simple yet so powerful. thanks for commenting

Bjork indeed. I love that sound. Haunting and cool.
Nice instrumentation Ridd.
Gripe: I'm used to better production from you. But, I only say that because I love.
Petra sounds absolutely great.

rsorensen
thanks dave, I hear ya. AND I appreciate your honest feedback. Will try to clear it up a little

has a really, really cool voice. I love when what sounds like strings come in. It may be some slide guitar under another slide guitar. My macbook speakers and my ears are a bad combination so you're probably like, "there aren't any strings, jackass. Did you even listen?"
Well I did listen. And I like it. So back off.
rsorensen
there aren't any strings, jackass! Did you even listen? glad you like it though :)
lengold
to turn this ballad into an epic song. Sounds great to me and I really like the 'heartbeat' throughout. Excellent.
Cheers

thanks len. really, credit goes to petra who wrote this gem. It's just as good on it's own. Thanks for listening

I love everything. The haunting style, the lyric, the vocal, etc etc. I like the production too (...sorry lava!). The only time that's not true is once or twice the vocals seem to get just a bit too forward and jump out (which is distracting). The source track I'm sure is like that. I'd hate to compress the whole thing though, the vocals are perfectly organic most of the time and need to stay that way (imo). Just work with those few parts if anything. Great work!
rsorensen
glad you like it! you're right about the vocals jumping forward in places. I'll keep that in mind as well when revisiting. And yeah - definitely don't want to compress anything too much. I'll be careful!

excellent collab you two:that beat sets the tone of 'the drudgery of it all' very well. A morose piece perfect for those dark Swedish winter evenings .. ;o) ..
good mix on the vocals in particular.. perhaps just a little drum adjustment .. my guess is the effects on the bass drum .. Eqing (maybe) .. the cavernous reverb is working better in the mix from 2:50 onwards .. but it stands out as too boomy < 2:50 to me. Thanks for sharing.
rsorensen
thanks for your specific feedback! much appreciated. Glad you like this and thanks for stopping by
bud
and excellent guitar work throughout. Nice vocal blends as well. Dig the whole production.
rsorensen
thanks bud. appreciate the feedback

I have to say as VERY BIG Bjork fan, I don't hear it. I think this sounds more like The Cranberries, but comparisons are usually fruitless anyway. It's more important to say that I think this song is beautifully composed/orchestrated. Petra's voice does sound darling at the end, just beautiful.
I think the resounding drum is fine when the rest of the sound bed picks up. I think it is only overwhelming when the orchestration is more bare. So I hope you won't bring those thumping sounds down to much in the second half because I think they create so much of the urgent/heartbeat feel of the song, an aspect which is important in Bjork songs ;)
rsorensen
thanks estellie. you know I guess it's 'Bjork'y' in that it's a little darker than what petra does usually. i didn't mean to imply she sounds like her. But yeah, her harmonizing at the end blows me away. I should really post her original acoustic version of this as well. It's amazing
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I don't think I'll lose the thumping. Just clear it up a little.

.. Floydian start .... Petra has a great voice ... someone mentioned the "muffled blanket" sound ... in parts I think it works with this style of "dark sound" and the reverb sort of just wraps it in a little more darkness .... right up MY alley ..... nice collab !

I clicked on this song about an hour ago, read the description and the lyrics and have been dying to hear it. My connection to the internoodle is weak at best, this morning being a fine example of just such frustrating disconnection. After waiting some 45 minutes for this to finish loading... man. This is right up my alley. There should be an album of this; a double album, and three EPs. Beautiful work from both of you. Though I can hear the production points everyone made, I don't personally think it's anything that takes away from the song. There's nothing glossy and smooth and pretty about feeling the way this song feels. I think it should be a little muffled and confused and maybe even jarring (not that it is jarring in any way.)
I this was a movie and I was a film cricket, I would give it two thumbs up.
