Hey all.
After listening to Falo's "Jackels", I was inspired to write a "heavy" tune. His whole style, drums, and vocal performance just got the old juices flowing and I was banging my head in no time. Killer tune Ian! I thought it was frickin' awesome! Thanks for sharing it and the download. Keep em' coming! We need more metal at MacJams!
Anyway, on a side note, I added a challenge to this tune because I was curious and needed to know. All I did was record and mix in GarageBand and left out the Pro Tools part of the process. I want to see if I can get the same results I'm looking for just out of GB. The only other thing I did to the GB file was of course, the conversion to mp3 in "Audacity", but first, I mastered it in T-RackS.
So...here's what I got and the jury's still out on it for me. I haven't came to a decision on it yet, but I have to say, it was MUCH easier just working in GB.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

PickQuickRecords
"Killer" is good. lol
Thanks for the listen. I appreciate it.

Sound is solid. Heavy rocking tune. My little speakers probably don't do it justice.
Thanks
Bill

I'm still getting a "wooshing" sound out of some of the cymbals at certain drum parts. Kinda aggravating, but something I need to address later I suppose.
Thanks again for the listen and comment.
Feter
Monster guitar work ...well done !
PickQuickRecords
Thanks for stopping in again and leaving a comment. I swear you never miss a tune I post. THANK YOU so much for all of the support.
You are officially the Mayor of MacJams in my book.

...on a mattress of nails...
I think you could have recorded this on a 4 track and it would have rocked the house...
Love the romantic artwork. "That First Kiss"...
PickQuickRecords
I'm not sure if this is correct, but sounds like you want to commit suicide after hearing this tune? lol just kiddin'
Thanks Bob.
It's just so much more work to dump everything into Pro Tools and finish in there. It's more reliable than GB for sure, all your files are still there when you open a session in PT. Now, I just backup to disc in the evening to solve that problem with GB. Also, I have to completely remix every time I dump into PT and I like to mix as I record. So it cut's my production time clearly over half and I can always convert later if I choose to. I just HATE giving up quality for time, so this experiment will basically help me determine how I post future stuff. But I think it gives PT a run for it's money all by itself. That's what I'm leaning towards.
Sorry about the rant, it happens sometimes. lol
Again, thanks for stopping in. I appreciate it.
kassia
this is awesome!
PickQuickRecords
Again, killer is good. lol
Thanks Kassia, I appreciate the time you took to listen and comment.

No disappointment here! Awesome! Thanks for the d/l
PickQuickRecords
I'm glad you liked it. I appreciate the download.
Now, I hope I don't ruin it by singing on it. lol
See ya around.
lengold
This is just superb. I can't hear anything missing from the production without pro tools.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers

PickQuickRecords
Cool. I thought it just wasn't me, but I wasn't quite sure if I was hearing it correctly. It seems on comparison to my other metal songs on PT, that GB stands up quite well by quality standards. Thanks again for the observations. I appreciate the feedback on the subject.
Thanks again.

I can't bang my head cause this is battering my head for me! So big, so relentless, so unforgiving, so..... Whatever happens with the vocals, NO REMIXING, capici?
Hugeness.
PickQuickRecords
I swear I won't. I known you heard that one before! lol
Thanks for the listen and comment.
Glad to see you poppin' in.

Bigger than Life, hell bigger than you.
We know the real deal here.....it was that freakin big ass guitar you got from the JibJab folks. Come on, tell the truth.
I would love to hear this over the speakers at a Hockey game at the warm ups. That home team would win hands down getting fired up on this one. Yeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
PickQuickRecords
You let the cat out of the bag! JibJab has AWESOME guitars! I'm there first endorsement. lol!
Thanks again man.
Maybe I should get it played at the Bears game. God knows we need the help.
Again, I appreciate the comment and listen.
Ibstrat
is awesome. You must playing a 7 string right? Sounds like your low string is tuned to Bb!Great tone on both the rhythm and lead parts.(I secretly dream of being a metal guitarist)
PickQuickRecords
Actually I'm tuned to C on a six string Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position, and then drop my sixth string to A#. You really need thick strings to do it, so there isn't too much flapping. I have a .058 on my low sixth string.
I used a couple of Boss GT-8 presets for the rhythm guitar tones. I LOVE Roland products, especially the BOSS series of guitar effects
So.. you'd already have the string tension down. Your half way there. Besides, I bet you could make a better metal song than me!!
Thanks again for the listen and comment Mark.
It's always a pleasure.
Relic67
Sounds great. The drums are particularly awesome. Care to enlighten on how you put the drum track together?
Can't wait to hear the vox.
PickQuickRecords
All I did was find some drum tracks I liked from the DOD loops in my library and then added an "extra" bass drum part where needed with the software instrument "Rock Kit". That's the whole taco.
It was quite fun to do actually. It makes just about any drum loop sound "metal" if you play in time with it.
racerat
Awesome and inspiring. Thanks for all the particulars on how you tuned, tweaked and strung your axe, very helpful. Until I read the thread here I was all "?????" now I'm all "!!!!!!!".
Kneeling humbly in your shredded shadow,
Philip

I'm glad you liked it and I'm happy to share how I did things.
Good to see you back around. If you have any particular questions about anything else, drop me a note and I'll get back to you as soon as possible with the answer if I have it.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen. I appreciate it.
Take care Phil. Glad your back.
Wummimann
what a guitarsound, great metal!
PickQuickRecords
Glad to see you back around.
Thanks for the listen and comment.
I'll be looking for your new uploads.

I dig H R Giger. If there was a perfect soundtrack to his art, this is art. Compressed to the max, but not beyond. You had my internal mindvoice screaming along. The kind of music that pounds the chest, needs to be loud. NICE.
PickQuickRecords
I really enjoy Giger's work. It has a "bio mechanical" feel that I like about it. Not so much THIS artwork, but others.
I'm glad you enjoyed it so far. Now I just need to get "my inner" voice on this. lol
Seriously though, It is much harder than I expected to get a good "raspy" type of vocals recorded. It's been a challenge to say the least, especially since I don't sing very often. I'm still plugging away at trying to get them right. So I should have some results pretty soon, I hope.
Thanks again for the comment.
I appreciate it.
CIPHER
Huge. Loved it. Needs bigger drums, but still awesome.
PickQuickRecords
I'm going to try and bring them up after I get some vocals on it. It was pretty hard to get them to this point with all the different loops, but I hear ya, they could use some volume.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the insight.
Moses
really a heavy metal fan, but this track sounds pretty fine to me. Real good rhythm to this tune. I actually downloaded this to try to appreciate the genre more. =)
PickQuickRecords
I appreciate the feedback. You should try exploring the other artist's here in the "heavy metal" genre. There is such a wide variety of different styles of metal uploaded. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that you enjoy.
Thanks again for the comment and download.

chris i think this mix is pretty amazing .. you and VW get a lot out of GB ... but then you bring a lot to the table ... damn fine tune man.
PickQuickRecords
I was also a bit surprised with the results. It usually takes me MUCH more time and remixing in Pro Tools to get what I want. So when I gave it a good listen in GB and compared it to my other metal tunes. I was quite confounded. I actually only used 2 stereo guitar tracks for the rhythm instead of my usual 4 in Pro Tools. So I'm at a loss in deciding to continue with PT or not. ANYWAY...
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks again.

That was completely by accident, I forgot to construct the solo part of the song! lol, finished the tune, went back and created a track, hit record and did some takes waiting for the part to start, but it never came! lol. I just ended up using the "noodling" takes for the solo and leaving out the part I had wrote for the rhythm. It sounded good so I said, "The hell with it! I'll keep it". lol
I actually threw out a large part of the solo recording and just kept the beginning.
Thanks again for the comment man. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
egobandit
For me This sounds great GB really holds up. Great track !!!
PickQuickRecords
I came to that conclusion also about GB. There really isn't much difference. I mean, you end up using a 16bit file for the final product anyway.
So I'll probably be using just GB for now on and convert to Pro Tools if I really have to. It's so much less work that way, and it also lets me finish a tune much quicker. No pun intended. lol
Thanks again for the listen and comment. I appreciate it.
regulus
something to listen to, but to crank it up and feel it. Definitely changes the heart rate,,,,,,,,,,,, way cool on the change up progressions. The the reverb to the snare was right on line. I thought when you hit the mid-eastern scales you could have had a stronger support rhythm wise for stronger articulation but not that critical.
Your smoken as usual........ don't stop.
regulus
what kind of saxophone is the guy playing in the pic????? :-)
PickQuickRecords
I also noticed the drop in volume at that point. I change to a single note rhythm riff which causes it to drop a little, but with a little editing, I think I can fix it if I ever decide to do so. I would like to get the vocals on it, but when I did it, it sounded awful. So if I find someone to lay down the vocals, I'll make sure I address that issue on the next mix.
Thanks again for the kind words, I appreciate it.
LOL, it's the H.R. Giger model! hehe
cplacito
how did you do this?
Help me achieve this level of metal!
