Description
This song is going to be the main theme for Super Nuke Bros Melee, an epic flash game created by Callum Stamp along with some others. Check out Callum's main page at:

http://secondstamp.newgrounds.com/

He's got some pretty cool stuff. Anyhow, like I said, this is going to be the main theme. The theme will be prevalent throughout the game in different iterations and I think that it speaks for itself. Like Super smash bros (which the game is loosely based off of - but incorporates many more things), the theme is there to describe the epic battle between all the different characters. While I'm not positive on the specifics of each characters, I will be working on another theme with the main melody in it.

Anyways, I'm pretty proud of how this turned out. Any comments and suggestions would be highly welcome because I can still adjust things as the the flash is still in production.

Thanks in advance for any comments, please vote fairly.

Re: Feter
Thanks for the comments here Feter. I'd love this to be in a film, but I don't think I have the ability to work my way into that business yet. I sure will be trying in the future haha. I'm glad that you liked this and the Orchestral samples really are helping me out. I think they're pushing my writing to be more realistic and that really shows through on the composition. Thanks again!

Threatening...
Hmmm. It's been a really long time, hasn't it? This song has a concise and powerful point. If that game ever gets put on the net or in stores, hit me up. I'll play it for the music (the Smash Bros. parody is welcome too). You're spreading icing on the cake with those sounds. I just got Logic, so hopefully I'll make my first composition on there in the next few months. How exciting.

Re: Zagar
Thanks for the comments, Zagar, it's good to hear from you. I'll be stopping by to check out your recent stuff after finals are done. Logic is great and a hefty learning curve too. I'll let you know when the game is up and where to play it. I've done 3-4 other songs for it, including the stage and character select as well as a couple of other stage BG music. Let me know when you have something up from Logic, I'll take a listen. Thanks again for the review!

Additional comments...
I'd like to respond to something Feter said, as it bothers me a little. Why is this song too big for a game? If video-games continue to be marginalized as an inferior art form, we'll miss out on the massive impression a combination of player interactivity, heartfelt emotion and high-quality scoring can make. Our video-game industry is continually employing more realistic mediums for its auditory layer. SinJim here contributes to an auspicious movement that will certainly pervade our world more and more in the years to come.

Also, when listening on a less forgiving surround sound, I noticed that some of the lower, quicker strings lost their rich tone and became muddled. That lower layer blends great harmonically and provokes some shivers, but needs distinction and clarity.

Re: Zagar
I agree with you Zagar on this. I think if you consider that the game is a flash game, I can understand where Feter is coming from. On the other hand, video games are an increasingly growing medium that may, at some point, pass the popularity of movies. With a game, you can evoke so many emotions and drag a character into the story. With movie you can essentially do the same thing; however, it's almost impossible to have a viewer "experience" the film. Although there are some exceptions to that.

Nevertheless, game and film composition is what I'd eventually like to break into, but the job market isn't very forgiving.

As for the low-register strings, thanks for the comments on that. I'm currently mixing on a college budget with headphones and I cannot listen to my compositions on a surround system. Although I have the ability to compose in Surround, it seems useless when I can't truly listen in surround. I'll look into adjust the strings a bit and maybe adding some 'oomph' to them. I'm eventually planning on getting some studio monitors, but I'm not sure as to whether or not I'm going to be staying in stereo or branching out to surround. It's a whole new slew of things I'm going to have to learn.

Wow, long comment. Thanks again for the comments.

Indeed
I can see where Feter could be coming from too with the "Flash game" thing. One problem we have is that the little cartoony video-games are still viewed as childish romps with shallow meaning. Even those, I contend, have a great story to be told, should you choose to tell it.

Yeah, getting that sound perfect can be hard. My ears are picking up something really specific. I think the undertone is excellent and can be universally enjoyed. etc... See, I haven't even reached your level of audio engineering yet. I'm still in GB. Can't wait to see what kinds of hurdles you're conquering.

P.S. Care to check out my latest tune(s)? Maestro's Beloved – Eve showcases what I've learned in orchestra. Maybe you could toss me some pointers. I'd appreciate any time you're willing to give.

Re: Zagar
Yea man, I'll definitely do that. I was going to put it off until tomorrow (I've got my last final EVAAARRR tomorrow) so I've been studying. Lol - I'm getting a degree in marketing and I want to eventually get into music. Ah, well. I guess I can hold a 9 to 5 for some time while I try and get better.

I'll take a half hour tonight and give your recent songs a good listen and post up some comments. I gave a quick listen to your vocal song, which I must say was really interesting. But to recommend some proper comments, I need to pay attention more.

Long story short, yea, I'll head on over soon.

This is fabulous. I've been drooling over the EastWest software - and now I'll drool even more. The sounds you have here are just incredible. Compositionally this piece is perfect for its purpose. Epic, lots of movement, a beautiful, recognizable theme. Great climbs and crashes, falling into softer moments. There is an element of all aspects of the game playing experience. It's perfect.

Only one suggestion - the transition at 0:57 from the strings to the woodwinds seemed a little choppy to my ear. I really like the change in sounds there, but the strings seemed to get chopped off instead of maybe a nice fade-out into the clarinet(?) taking over.

This is wonderful - and, man, best of luck to you with this project. It sounds like a great opportunity, and I agree - video games and their soundtracks are becoming more and more respected as the works of art they are. It's a tough genre of music to break into, but I think you've got what it takes - I'll be keeping an ear out for more from you!

Re: Kassia
Yea, the EastWest Software is really amazing. My only suggestions is to make sure you have 4 GB of ram for it. I've got 2 and I'm finding that I hit my overload fairly quickly. While I have developed some quick work arounds, it would be much quicker if I could just keep everything n midi form instead of having to freeze the tracks or even record them to audio. Ah well, that's what I get for a college budget right?

In terms of the transition, I was really hoping no one noticed that, heh. I've always had trouble with strings in Logic because when you end a region, Logic (for some dumb reason) continues what would have been there had the region been looped again. It does this only for about a second of the first note but it's REALLY annoying. I thought that it'd end with the EastWest software but it's definitely the sequencer's fault. That being said, I usually try and fade out the volume to make the transition better but I did it a bit abruptly on this piece. I'll try and fix that.

Thanks for the comments here, hopefully I'll get to going somewhere. If you really liked this one, you should check out my song "Dungeon of Deceit." I think that it's a bit better and also showcases Stormdrum 2. You may now continue drooling hehe.

Thanks again!
