Description:
This is the last tune of the "Woodbury Suite"...4 songs written in the town of Woodbury, Vermont...summer of 1996.
No "hidden meanings", here. I was sitting on the porch, pluckin' my geetar when I happened to look up at the sky and continued to pluck my geetar. Then I grabbed the slide and here's what I came up with.

Gorgeous, enviable geetar playing. And, I'm envious of the sky that inspired this gorgeous piece of music. I've never been to Vermont, but I believe I need to go!
guitapick
...I can't imagine anyone not loving Vermont...except in the winter. You'd have to love skiing...but it's still beautiful...just very, very, VERY coooooooooooooooooooold. But the summer and fall are to die for...
Thanks, Stacey...

with some fun surprises.
You put a smile on my face Bob,
Thanks

Cool piece, what ho? One of these days we'll figure out "who" really wrote it...
Glad you liked it...

The sound here is terrific. The strings sound crystal clear and wonderfully resonant. Great rhythmic playing, and lovely slide work. Great picture, by the way, and really sets off the music nicely. Very cool. Peace.
guitapick
...thanks, man. So glad you dropped by and took the time to comment.
It IS a beautiful picture...isn't it? Couldn't have taken a bad one that evening.

This is co-written by the great state of Vermont, Love it Bob!
guitapick
...big welcome back...and: yeah, "co-written by the state of Vermont" pretty much nails it.
Thanks

...ain't it sweet?
"It's Christmas"...I'm listening right now, as I type...
How wonderful...
Ed Hannifin
...played with clarity and great time...
I think this may be the best recording you've done so far. There's terrific air and presence to the guitar, lots of sparkle without getting metallically clanky... Very even, too, without having certain notes honk out more than others... Steel guitars can sound so cool, but when not mic'd or played or recorded well they can be a sore trial to the ears... Here you're bringing out the beauty of the instrument...
The instrument also suits the tune, so it doesn't sound like, 'Hey, I just happen to own this National, so I'll play THAT...' The tune and the guitar bring out the best in each other...
Ed
guitapick
I just DO happen to own this National...!
Well said, man. And I have to agree with you. This particular piece really brings out the best in the instrument. There was very little thought behind it. Might sound corny....but it sang to the sky that day and that's how the tune got it's name.
Thanks...

"Simple" and "free", are two words that come to mind, when I hear this, Bob. Not that there's anything about what it take s to be able to write and perform this, is either. I don't know enough to be able to know that. I was thinking more in the context of life and living. Simple and free to do as I seem to wish, have pretty much been a personal creed that I reference as a guide to live by. I kinda get that from you, too, so it's no surprise that this tune seems to reflect that. And I just glanced up to read yer liner notes and, BAMB!..., there it is...
Nice work, Bob, even if it wasn't work. Thanks for sharing it. Another good one.

great composition. I feel privileged to have gotten a live preview at GBM last month.
guitapick
...the holidays are over, let's do it again...
paul f. page
...to agree with everything Ed said (above). I am not a guitarist and don't understand the intricacies of the instrument, but THIS composition/improv is just suburb, Bob. The inner voices don't get lost and are articulated so clearly throughout...Oh...I love that slide at the end. Wow. You sure captured the scene you were looking at. Perfect...and filled with such a joyful spirit, too. Clearly one of your best pickin' sessions. You are quite the master of your instrument.
Peace.
Paul

...it was a pleasure listening to this tune's creation and I'm glad you caught it, too...

this has big porch written all over it. seems the type of song that one would come up outside in the summertime. doesn't get more perfect then that.
guitapick
...all the seasons. But summer rocks! And, yeah...this puts me right back there. Every time I play it.
Thanks, Vic.

I'm hearing that wonderful descending line that you've used in some of your other signature pieces. It must symbolize a thread that runs through your life. That constant; a steady stream that moves along side of your journey through life. A comfortable companion.
Love these slide pieces. It's not an in your face like Derek Truck, but a nice woodish blend of a country hollow, with it's natural echo, lulling one into it's lazy ways.
Like after a nice trek in the summer woods, coming to a clearing and pausing to sit on a stump, just to take nature all in with it's sights and smells.
guitapick
...definitely not like D. Truck...but I DO love his stuff. Allman Bros were a big influence on my early slide playing.
kristyjo
I like all of the movements of the Woodbury Suite that you've posted. This is happy, yet contemplative. I listened at school, but I don't sign in there, so I can't comment. This is good music for listening to after a hard day with students.
guitapick
...in my school, too, as of late. Sometimes I imagine the parents saying:
"If you don't behave, you'll get coal in your stocking"!!!
...which is not always conducive to good study habits.
Enjoy your vacation, kristyjo...happy holidays...
VicDiesel
A couple of simple chords, but you play around with them quite nicely. Great stuff.
guitapick
Thanks, Vic...just playing around with the basics
timothy devine

always count on excellent guitar work from you, and this is no exception. Really really good, man. You should check out Doug Martsch's solo album, 'Now You Know'. This reminds me of a few tracks from it. It has the same melancholic but gritty rootsy sound. Love this. A lot.
guitapick
...means a lot to me...
I'll check out Doug Martsch...thanks for the lead...

Woodbury Lake situated on Route 14 between the hamlet of East Calais and Hardwick... I know the area extremly well as those are my old stomping grounds. In fact, I can still get to the Woodbury/ Hardwick line from Montpelier without touching a paved road. I grew up and came of age in Central Vermont (North Calais) and my most of my favorite memories (that don't include wife and kids, of course) are of that region. It was a great place to grow up... as rural and unspoiled as you can imagine.
So after that long winded intro...
This song feels like home.
guitapick
...is a very nice thing to say, Adam...feels like home.

That was some cool inspiring play...

Nicely done Bob, this is a joy to hear. Your skill here in selecting a style to match the sound of your guitar is spot on.
Be well,
