Description:
When I first heard Estella's voice over a year ago I thought to myself 'I'm going to write a powerpop song for her to sing someday'. I'm a big fan of Rachel Hayden's vocals and the songs she did with 'That Dog' and 'The Rentals', and I've always wanted to collaborate with a vocalist that can sing as well as she does. When I heard Estella do her thing, I knew she was the one. So, I sent her a note and asked if she was interested. Luckily for me she was on board and I got to work. It took a while for both of us to really get going with it (life got in the way), but after I sent her a rough mix and she sent back her lead vocals, I was totally floored. She did something so original with the verses I wasn't expecting. Something that brought a real emotion to the song (you'll hear what I mean), and something I wouldn't have thought of doing. She also came up with a great lyrical concept that suits the song perfectly. I added some BG and bridge vocals to finish it off and here we have 'Afraid of Love'. I couldn't be more happy with how this turned out. It's been in the works since February but it's totally been worth the wait. This song is everything I hoped for and more. Thanks Estella. You nailed it.

Lyrics:
Afraid of LoveI didn't want to keep
this secret to myself,
love him in private
and never ever tell.
I thought, I wished I could
reach out and touch him.
I was so careful with my words
that I said nothing.
I always do this:
afraid of love,
always do this:
afraid of love
He smells like chocolate and dirt.
He makes me hungry.
I wanted to stay,
but I left the country.
I want him for dessert.
I wanted to speak up.
BOY/GIRL:
Tell me why you're so afraid of love/ I wanted to stay but I left the country.
I always do this:
afraid of love,
always do this:
afraid of love
BOY:
Why did you run away from me?
Why are you so afraid of love?
I wish you would have just told me
BOY/GIRL:
I wish you would have stayed/I wish I could have stayed
I always do this:
afraid of love,
always do this:
afraid of love

You cats are barking up my tree on this one. If cats were to bark... You know I can't see the word Rentals and not wait for a moog to show up. Did you actually use one? Either way there's nothing wrong with this track at all. Estella brings it with the vocals - lots of good stuff happening. great collab!
rsorensen
would be very cool.
the synths are definitely 'moogy' but no I didn't use an actual moog (I wish). Thanks for listening dude

Overdriven guitars and Estella's voice, what a great pair. Killer lyrics, great mix. So glad life let you two finish this up. Good things for those wait and this is no exception.
Thanks to both, Russ
rsorensen
Thanks - I'm glad we were able to finish it up too. Thanks for stopping by
As if Estella's voice isn't enough to carry any song, you write a totally cool song to showcase her! A great listen, you two work very well together.
I hope you do more together!

I'd certainly like to do more. This was a lot of fun

the vocals are sweet, sweet, and the style is all early 80's girl powerpop/punk so of course i'm hooked, and you can't go wrong with the weezer songwriting manual so the break is perfect (I like your vocals too on the break). great song, thanks for the christmas dl..
rsorensen
i appreciate that. when i first heard estella's voice I knew she'd be perfect for a song like this. glad you like it man

in one song. Very nice. Cool driving tune. I dig the combo of the heavy guitars and the delicate voice, like if Curve and Nirvana had a love child. I have some mix issues. I wish the verses pulled back to showcase Estellie's voice, maybe the chorus too. I love My Bloody Valentine, but I don't think that's what you're going for here. The mix has the mixed-b- a-guitarist feel (sorry about the anti-guitarist bias, I'm sure it could be said that my mixes have that mixed-by-a-keyboardist feel) which a lot of R's songs avoid, but here reduce the drums to a memory and don't let the voices shine. The effects on her voice contribute to the burial. I wonder also about the male voice on the break, I personally would have let her sing there, but if it is important, I think more of her voice at the end to balance, or more two voice interplay to round it out. There is a really great song in there, don't let my whining convince you that I don't like the song. I honestly do.
rsorensen
thanks for the thorough and honest critique. It was tough mixing in estella's vocals to such a seemingly loud song, so any advice for a remix is much appreciated. I am pretty happy with this mix but I agree that her vocals could have been a little more up front. This was the best I could do though without driving myself crazy with remixing over and over again hehe. Thanks though - if I do revisit this I'll definitely consider all your suggestions.

I love how it tells the story from both sides and the whole idea of missing out because of being afraid of something. Great d/l!
rsorensen
thanks sheila! Yeah I like when when the song shifts POVs then we sing that bridge line together, changing the wording a little according to the character. Kind of like a mini rock opera. Hey - might be cool to do a 'sequel' to this... Thanks for downloading!

I'm really flattered by your description of the song. Truth is, I didn't think I could pull something like this off (not quite sure I did, really, ha ha). I was kind of intimidated when I first heard your so-called rough mix because it sounded so big and professionally done.
But it was just a lot of fun to work on, and I'm happy it turned out the way it did. Blows me away. Your voice gives me goosebumps.
And the hubby loves it. He's my number one fan, of course, but I think this is more his style than my usual stuff ;)
BTW, he wants to take a photo of me "running away" for the cover art, ha ha.
Anyway, I have no problem working with you in the future :)
