What a wonderful peaceful hymn ..this is one of the
sweetest themes you ever wrote ..its so much holding
the folky side as it has the spirit of the classical
form as a hymn like piece ...the arrangement just
fantastic ...very smart move with the second violins

There's this exciting East Coast game of musical chairs, played with Shaker furniture, where the last person left to sit in one of these gorgeous chairs, actually gets to KEEP the chair! And I won the grand prize... after the music stopped, I ran off with the Shaker Booty! (smirk)
Nice piece of string work, I like the Americana feel and the little flute melody is good. This does have a "Shaker dance" aspect, and reminds me a bit of my High School concert band days playing Holst's 2nd suite with the Shaker dance in it. Cool!

Bowman
was once my favorite game. It still might be if I could find someone to play it with.
Thanks, and I'll be looking up that Holst suite for sure.
Merry Christmas Eduard.

...who's a brilliant sax/clarinetist/composer. He's been focusing on Shaker music for the past 4 or 5 years. Done lots of research on the culture (diminishing though it might be).
I mention this because I've heard lots of Shaker music through him. And this is VERY nice, Charlie. Thanks for the sounds...well done.
Bowman
from a Shaker expert but have encountered and enjoyed some of their music over the years and wasn't A Simple Gift... by Copeland based on a Shaker tune?
Thanks Bob and have a very Merry Christmas.

the wonderful Christmassy sound you've got here. Puts me in mind of a busy sunny Christmas morning with crisp snow on the ground and people bustling about delivering presents. All the best M

I'm growing found of Reindeer and developing a hearty laugh. I wonder if that means something?

I can't help get Aaron Copland out of my head when I hear this - it is a lovely arrangement between the flute and the strings that expresses such joy and celebration. In fact there are places where the flute sounds like it is playing a variation of 'tis a Joy to be Simple'. As Drak said it has an American feel to it which I think you captured brilliantly.
Small nit - there sounds like an odd note in the violins at 1:02 which I don't hear repeated as an interval anywhere else. Given the reasonably straightforward harmonies I wonder if this note is in integrity with the rest of the piece.
Lovely work again Charlie!
All the best,
Doug
Bowman
for another careful listen and for your kind and encouraging comments Doug.
As for that string note you correctly heard heard at 1:02, it is for better or not, intentional.
Even in a piece as harmonious as Shaker there is a part of me that loves to flirt with dissonance. It's actually one of my favorite moments, suggesting a hint of discord, but you have a point that it's out of character and perhaps threatens the integrity of the whole. I guess a part of me just shies away from unblemished beauty. But I love discussing intentions and how others interpret them I sometimes wish there where more of that here.
As usual great comments from you Doug and thanks,
Best,
Charlie
