First of all. Please keep listening after the first minute. I wanted to leave all the warts in the song to show how the jam came together.
This is a song I selected from a jam I had last night (12-19-08) with two of my friends. I brought my new Zoom H2 Recorder and set it up in the middle of the room between us. We have jam sessions every other month or so and we have a round robin where each of us gets to play guitar and we switch out on the other instruments. It's pretty fun.
I'm the least talented musician in the group, but this is my profile, so you get to hear me on guitar.
It sounds a lot like Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock. We never meant for it to be Maiden Voyage, but when you jam you just go with it. I bought a book on jazz comping for the guitar and was practicing a couple chords while we jammed around waiting to gel and this is what came out. It is very cold here in Montana. thus... 'Arctic Voyage"
I really like this piece because you can hear the fumbling around in the first minute or two and hear the song come together as something cool by the end.
Production Notes: The man's house I played at is OLD and we set up in his art studio. It's wood floors and all and I think the room provides a nice reverb to the recording, the Zoom H2 was set up in the middle of the room with the musicians surrounding it equally spaced apart.
Equipment.... (none of it is mine unfortunately)
Instruments: Ibanez Pat Metheny PM20, Fender 70's Precision Bass, Snare and Fan Brushes, Fender Bassman 60's Re-issue, Fender Vibrolux 70's original amp.
Musicians: Me on Guitar, Jim on Bass, Brad on Snare.
Sounds tweaked in Garageband.
