Arctic Voyage

Description
First of all. Please keep listening after the first minute. I wanted to leave all the warts in the song to show how the jam came together.

This is a song I selected from a jam I had last night (12-19-08) with two of my friends. I brought my new Zoom H2 Recorder and set it up in the middle of the room between us. We have jam sessions every other month or so and we have a round robin where each of us gets to play guitar and we switch out on the other instruments. It's pretty fun.

I'm the least talented musician in the group, but this is my profile, so you get to hear me on guitar.

It sounds a lot like Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock. We never meant for it to be Maiden Voyage, but when you jam you just go with it. I bought a book on jazz comping for the guitar and was practicing a couple chords while we jammed around waiting to gel and this is what came out. It is very cold here in Montana. thus... 'Arctic Voyage"

I really like this piece because you can hear the fumbling around in the first minute or two and hear the song come together as something cool by the end.

Production Notes: The man's house I played at is OLD and we set up in his art studio. It's wood floors and all and I think the room provides a nice reverb to the recording, the Zoom H2 was set up in the middle of the room with the musicians surrounding it equally spaced apart.

Equipment.... (none of it is mine unfortunately)
Instruments: Ibanez Pat Metheny PM20, Fender 70's Precision Bass, Snare and Fan Brushes, Fender Bassman 60's Re-issue, Fender Vibrolux 70's original amp.

Musicians: Me on Guitar, Jim on Bass, Brad on Snare.

Sounds tweaked in Garageband.

Nice jam
It's fun to get together with friends and just make music. This grooves very nicely, and the further into the jam, the more you can tell the joy of the musicians in making this music.

Warts and all is a good thing
Great to hear you guys having some fun. This is what music is all about from the musicians point of view. It's about getting together with some friends and letting it all hang out.

I go along with Vic when he says you can hear the fun progress the further into this little jam you guys get.

Keep on keepin' on Brian, love it.

Thanks again..
I really appreciate you giving a listen. This one could wear on someone who isn't patient. Jams are usually more fun for the musicians than the listener.

Really nice recording and excellent jam
glad you left everything intact. I especially like the chat and the lagh when you switched up the chord at about 2:12. The H2 is pretty amazing - isn't it? Best $200 bucks I've spent on music in a long time. You did really well with it here I have to say. This one killer little jam - I think your guitar work sounds great.

Naked Arctic Voyage
Folks that don't jam can't appreciate the boldness and bravery that it takes to participate in an open jam. There is leading and following, and moments of lost panic, and then those moments of ESP like connection that bring it all together. As an old time jammer, I enjoy listening and get a thrill anticipating where things will go. The sound quality is really good. What mikes did you use? It is great that you can do this regularly. Keep on!

thanks...
i'm sure you figured out by now I just used the h2. The H2 is the best thing since Ketchup. Jam's are cool. Sometimes I listen to this and cringe and think I should go and delete this on macjams and sometimes I think it's cool how this came out of nothing and enjoy the process.

I would have been spellbound,
listening as this jelled. There are only so many notes and ways of putting them together. Consider this as having a family resemblance to Hancock's MM. When you get famous, just tweak it a bit, or wait... Herbie won't be around forever. Best kind of Jazz...smooth. Thanks.
