Amy's Chasing Clouds

Description
I came across a watercolor illustration at drawn.ca, a blog site for illustrators and graphic designers (check it out if your in the business), it was a woman with a kite. Kind of whimsical. That pretty much gave me the idea for the story. The album art is one of my own, not the illustration that inspired this. copyright stuff, ya know.

Of course the clouds around my area are only dropping snow...... way to much!

Lyrics
Amy's Chasing Clouds

Amy tries to the catch the clouds
with a day-glo kite
Amy hangs wet clothes
on the line to dry
beyond the sky
to touch the clouds
with a kite

Amy's Chasing Clouds
Amy's Chasing Clouds

Amy loves to daydream
but the skies are clear
she could ride a cloud
she's almost there
a hand to the clouds
and the moon and stars
with out stretched arms

Amy's Chasing Clouds
Amy's Chasing Clouds

someone thought they saw
a girl in the clouds
someone found a kite
on the branch of a tree
I shield my eyes
to the skies
i see footprints in the clouds

Amy's Chasing Clouds
Amy's Chasing Clouds

Chasing Clouds

cool site
Thanks for leading me to that website. Could come in handy. I'm thinking of moving more in the direction of illustration than just graphic design, so I'll be sure to check out this one.

Interesting to know how you get ideas for songs Vic. I don't think I ever get my ideas to songs like that... Usually I start with playing some licks on the guitar and after messing around a bit a melody or chord patterns appear, and I start to work more constructive with it, to make it a song, if I feel there is a potential for one. The lyrics almost always come after the chords and melody are in place.

You made a new cool Vic Holman song with the expected cool guitars and vocals:) Great production. I think I hear some Beatles influences in those harmonies.

Do you use that special panning effect that logic offers on your acoustic guitar, or have you recorded two guitars with a delay on one of them? I find that effect pretty cool when used alone or if won't make a conflict with other (rhythm) elements. I feel a slight distraction from it especially in the beginning of the song, but I guess it may be a matter of taste;)

Hi Thor
drawn.ca is pretty cool, i check it at least once a week.

it sounds like you work on a song pretty much the way i do. lyrics are always last for me. I might get hung up for days trying to think of what to write about. So, that illustration I saw sparked the idea.

there are 2 acoustics played. I think I did have a delay on one. Originally this started as just a acoustic piece, after it evolved i forgot to bypass that plug-in. I must of gotten so use to it I didn't notice.

I also
caught the Beatles influence and maybe a bit of early Traffic. The thing that struck me most was the many sounds going on, but they all seemed to compliment each other very well - excellent production.
This really is a great track Vic - lovely lyrics and fantastic performance.
Cheers
Len

Thanks Len
yeah there are some obvious Beatle stuff in places. On the backing vocals i did 2 tracks. and used a rotory choir channel strip. It reminds me a bit of the Blue Jay Way vocals. So I played that up a bit.

Thanks again Len for the listen.

Nice bit of pyschedelica
Great vocals - with nifty echo treatments. I like the chord progression, which is not always predictable. Enjoyed!

I usually throw a curve in the chord flow. so it doesn't become to repetitious. that's what i keep telling myself anyway.

thanks again.

amy's clouds
some very cool changes. The tensions in the chorus are the best. i am also partial to the leslie sound on the guitar, very white album.

the chorus
I like the chords in that. I thought the backing vocals, also run through a leslie plug-in would sound like being taking away by the wind, i keep thinking wizard of oz for some reason, when i hear it.

i appreciate the listen!

fantastic
this is a great song that reminds me a bit of the "Dukes of Stratosphear"
guitars and vox blend nicely, cool arrangement, great chord progressions...
the arpeggiated guitar parts are super-cool...
effected vocals at the end a nice touch... deserves to be a hit for sure!

usually
I'll play around with chord progression several evenings in a row. When I finally have something then i start recording, (like just the acoustics here) the extra layers are ad-libbed, some stay, some get cut out. Most of the times it's unexpected how the song cab shift from the beginning to the final piece.

Thanks again Feter.

ibanez
great guitar layers - strumming acoustic in one ear, chorus arpeggio in another, lead in the middle. btw really like your tube lead effect - very cool, literally, as opposed to warm sounding - cuts right through the layers and i like how I can still hear the strings within the effect - sometimes the effects mask the instrument you know what I mean. funny i never read your hardware descriptions before this tune but always thought of you as "ibanez guy" because your guitar sounds to me seemed very "ibanez"...and here you are with the ibanez guitars...

Ibanez
The really do make comfortable guitars. The SA electric is a thin body style that is super comfortable and light, the acoustic is made out of birch, if I remember right.

Actually the solo's are played on the gibson SG. It can cut though a mix very well.

it's a habit that has gone out of control. The hardest part for me is coming up with lyrics. I have probably recorded over 250 songs. Some I took down years ago, some never have been posted. Mostly, because I still didn't know all the recording tricks and have yet to go back and redo them.

Addictive
The Vic Holman sound is addictive. You have managed to bring psychedelics into today. This you have done without getting it to sound constructed or designed, just very natural and - most of all - your own style. Your productions have super high class. I love them and download them. Keep on!

bringing the psychedelic sound into today has pretty much been my goal for the most part. The 60's & early 70's music had a big impact on me. Ad it's safer then drugs:)

Vic's Losing It
Vic,

you're getting kinda crazy with these psychoinventive vocal things you're doing. Stuttering echoing reversering things that people like the Beatles would do...

You have a cloud thing working for you these days. Your leads soar above them and I can never get enough of your leads. All the guitars sound great on this tune. Strummy, tremeloey and brutal blistering.

The back up vocals singing "Ahhhhhhhh" sound really nice too.

I rocked to Body Electric today and my foot was sore from stomping. I'll download this tune too.

Merry Christmas Vic.

Bob

Hi Vic
I really like the image right up front

Amy tries to the catch the clouds
with a day-glo kite
Amy hangs wet clothes
on the line to dry

kite on a string /clothes on a line - very clever and a clear image.

Your bass playing on this one has a really nice feel - there's something about it that I really like. Cool vocal effect too. Another excellent tune.

this time around i wanted to keep the lyrics light and fluffy. the bass for the most part is pretty simple. but i did add some McCartney type lines so it wouldn't be to simple all over

one benifit of doing some psychedelic songs, is that you can take a pop song and twist it all around.

one of these days i need to buy a camcorder. I've been thinking about that. but my bbq isn't as cool as Bob's. It's pretty rusty.

There are lots of beautiful clouds etc...
on the 'Weather Underground' website under the 'Wunder Photos' browse tab. My Sailor worked in the weather office on the USS IOWA (long time ago) and checks out all the weather sites a couple times a day - He's teaching me a lot of cool stuff about the weather (like Virga Snow) but Me, I just look out the window and dress accordingly. : ) You are so lucky!!! You had a white Christmas! : ) Best Wishes for a Happy and healthy New Year, Vicar. Flying kites is fun---so is blowing soap bubbles and watching them float on the breeze - always makes me daydream of what it must be like to own a pair of wings. : )
Vic Holman said 3074 days ago (December 26th, 2008)
Ha Ha not that lucky
record snow. in most places it's up to my waist. It has been a mess trying to get around in. But it does look pretty....... if you don't have to go out in it. It's been extremely cold for quite a while as well.

I've always liked watching clouds, they almost have a personality to them.

Nice way ..
.. of finishing up for 2008 Vic (unless you have another in your vault of course).

I noticed something odd about the very long delay on one of the acoustic tracks which really threw me off-kilter. Not sure its a problem, just a little strange.

Really nice tune - are you using DoD or something else - drums work well.

Not much more to add - sounds like a typical VH tune - great!

Hey Neil
this is it for the year.
yeah Thor noticed the delay effect as well. The song started out as something different and I forgot to take the delay off and must of gotten unconscience to it.

the drums are midi as always. I play them on 3 separate tracks. bass and snare, cymbals and high hat, and toms. that way I can control the levels easier and lay them down in real time

hm...
kinda just floated away as i was listening and forgot that i was doing so. a bit of a strange surreal psychedelic experience... wondering how much of you had to do w/ it... pretty much all of it, huh... it's not like i'm sitting and starring at a kite on my page while listening to me sing about amy... hard to slip one by me sometimes, V - i tell ya...

quite experiential, obviously... - nice trip. thanks for, yet, another interesting journey. D
