Description:
I wrote this song in 2001, and have sung it with my younger students for several concerts since then. This recording was made during a 15 minute (indoor) recess with volunteer 1st & 2nd graders from Nasonville School. We had some technical difficulties with the concert DVD, and I used this to fill in the sound. For the actual concert, we do it in a darkened gym, and 'light' electric candles.
Lyrics:
Light a single candle, watch it gleam and glow.Let its flame remind us of the world we long to know.
There could be love, every child's family would care,
Instead of being lonely, everyone would learn how to share.
(refrain)
There could be peace, war and conflict would end,
Instead of teaching hatred, everyone could learn to be friends.
(refrain)

thanks Kristy ... you made a cold grey day here warm and snug ... those little guys sound just perfect !
kristyjo
The sentiment is here, but I worked a bit more on the production and posted on icomp, if you're interested in a better overall sound. Still, the kids DO sound great, and they put their hearts into it!

I am proud of the kids. They always give 100% to any project. I'm glad it warmed your heart!

sound of innocence in those young voices and a lovely melody too for those thoughtful words, Loved it, M
kristyjo
It is a bit of an old-fashioned wish, but it holds through even for kids of this young age. Interesting, how you brought up the innocence, because one of my students couldn't believe that ANYONE couldn't have a loving family. He actually challenged the idea that some kids might not have that in their lives. I hope he grows up to make sure it's true that 'every child's family will care.'

Could this BE more heart warming?? What a wonderful, sweet, genuine offering for the season. Nothing like childrens' voices to make you feel like everything will be ok. thanks KJ!
kristyjo
thanks, Magna. Although I didn't get a 'perfect take' (some forgotten words and notes) the feelings come through, I think. Happy Holidays!

Children can make anyone happy... : )& When singing like this . . . 8 )
(bigeyedsmiley,no 8)) ! Beautiful ThankYou so much for sharing this gem , This is so sweet & the lyrics....nothing more need to be said does it..? there's one word i cant hear(being swedish)in the first vers of "...instead of teaching... ?..." is it the same as in the second vers? God Bless You & all Children !
***There could be Peace*** 8 )
kristyjo
The reason that it's hard to hear, is because one of my stronger singing girls forgot which verse we were on, and started to sing the wrong words. The words are in the lyrics section, as they're supposed to be sung. Thanks for listening.

and beautiful performance - Merry Christmas, K.J.!
kristyjo
I'm so glad you got here! I love your interpretations of Christmas songs. This is more a 'non-specific' song, but it really resonates with some of the students as a Christmas song, especially when we light the candles!
Roxylee
You must be a great music teacher, to get them to sing with such confidence and feeling. :-) Thank you for sharing this with us, Kristy.
kristyjo
Actually, the kids have really been a blessing in the way they took this song and made it their own. Merry Christmas!

How, just by being, kids change the way we perceive things?
Happy Holidays!

...the sound of children's voices is always welcomed during this season... You have written a sweet song that is so much within their range, too, and with a message that cannot be taught too early. ... Beautiful, KJ. I love it.
Peace.

You know what it's like to work with students, so you know how magical it is when they embrace a project and give it their best effort. Thanks for commenting, and have a happy 2009.

Nothing like a childrens choir to get us in the right spirit for Christmas. Must be amazing rehearsing on a song with them and then finally geting to do the concert. Thanks for sharing:)
kristyjo
It's great. Although we didn't have the same technical hurdles you did with your Christmas Collaboration, it's still exciting for us to get together in a group and record. Thanks for listening and commenting.

This song has a great melody, and your volunteers are singing it quite well. Delightful.

I'll have to work on getting a better set-up for recording in my classroom, just for opportunities like this. I received a Zoom recorder for Christmas, and I'm hoping to use it for school. It's been enthusiastically recommended by a couple of other music teachers for things like this. Then the production can be an asset rather than a hindrance to these postings. Glad you stopped by to listen!

....don't know why the first few notes caused me to cloud up, Kj, but they did. somehthin bout these kids fearlessly (and perhaps, fearfully, too) singing w/ all the soul that they can muster. so, does this make you a music teacher? i should prolly read a bit, huh...
one of the most heart warming tunes i've listened to, since forever. really!
man, i'm just really choking up and i haven't a clue as to why, Kj
but thanks! D
kristyjo
Sometimes music does that to me, too. These kids sang their hearts out for the concert, and for this recording. One of the little guys really got up into the stratosphere for a few measures, and I left it in, just because he was so 'into' the song. Thanks for listening, and for sharing your reaction to the song and the singers!

This takes me way back nearly three years ago when I first became acquainted with your music via "The Music of America." Churches and schools are truly lucky to have you writing great original music to fill needs that would be often poorly served by the occasionally corny catalogue music. Far from that, yours always has a wonderful sincerity and pleasantness to it. Have you considered getting this sort of thing published? :)

Really a cool song.. with a very important messege...
