Description:
My Christmas offering for 2008. Base recording of lead voice with acoustic guitar done on a Zoom H2 portable digital recorder. Two voices added in Logic Express. A bit of a rough cut but Christmas is fast approaching! See my follow-up orchestral version which is quite polished.

Lyrics:
Child of Destiny

God, in glory, brings a star so bright. G - D - C - D
A son is born in a humble barley mesh. G - D - C - D
Behold, the savior, our new light, C - D - G - C
a child of destiny, the Word made flesh. Am - F - D - G

Mary, full of grace, will know the sorrow and the joy
of bringing forth the one whom the prophets log foretold
Joseph, by her side, will help raise up the boy,
a child of destiny, the World made whole.

. [refrain]
. Praise the Christ, lift up the baby. Em - Bm - F - G
. Raise the Spirit that lives inside you. Em - Bm - F - G
. Grow the love of Holy Family. Em - A - F - G
. Grow, the child of destiny. Am - F - D - G

Wonderful
Wonderful song. I love music that exemplifies the reason I celebrate Christmas. Yes, a bit rough - a couple of harmonies took awhile to fall into place, still, this does sound like it is being performed live for us all to enjoy, and I'm glad you did it now, rather than after a couple of weeks of practice. I enjoy the simple guitar accompaniment. (I'm getting a Zoom H2 for Christmas. I hope what I record on it will sound as good as this.)

Zoom H2

Kristyjo: Thanks for your comments. Yes, I certainly want to be able to perform this live -- hopefully at St. Mary's Church next Christmas. I was reticent to layer in the vox harmonies but got carried away after watching an old Lawrence Welk Christmas show rebroadcast. I will add a piano part so my choir director can join in. I'd love to have a flute, too.

The guitar picking pattern you hear in this piece is fairly new for me, utilizing thumb on lowest two strings and three fingers on top four strings. For many years, all I did was thumb-n-pointer finger picking. My goals for 2009: smoother picking, faster picking, lead soloing, more variation with strumming and picking, and a new guitar.

Also need to work on my voice. Gotta do those vocal exercises. Or maybe transpose this song down a step to F. I sound a bit strained here.

When using the Zoom H2, about all I have to do is add a bit of reverb in GB or Logic Express. The H2 recordings are very well contoured. It has become an integral part of my song development and production.

Open for collaboration

Thanks, Vic. I bet you could provide some real nice period instrumentation for this. Feel free to play around with it. It is open for collaboration.

Adding to...
...comments above: I really enjoy your solo voice on this composition: very sweet tenor that is clear and easy to understand and with a timbre that is pleasant to listen to...The technical difficulties can be worked out later on. But I am glad you didn't wait another year to post this...It IS, though, very much worth working on to perfect all the harmonies and such...You might ultimately consider expanding the orchestration a bit.
Peace.
