Description:
Recorded and mixed on board a Jet Blue A320 aircraft between Long Beach, California and New York City, December 21, 2008 - seat 10A.
Michael2 recently referred to my in-flight studio as the skylab. Many thanks to the crew of Jet Blue and the ambiance of the Airbus A320. We had a strong tailwind yesterday so this piece was completed in under three hours.

Mile high music. Nice touch, did you have your guitar and bass with you too? Love the concept with those soundbites, i got to try that.
bud
just loops and the keypad. Soundbites recorded with pinhole and noise removed in Audacity at different levels. When you take heavy noise like the ambiance of the plane and use noise reduction you end up with those little electronic glitches you hear in this piece.
Thanks for checking in - and have nice holiday.

this is great. Any time I try to write while flying I would always loose focus, or my battery would die, etc...the guitar is outstanding. gotta be some more loops than just the GB stock. really a great listen. You may have given me the motivation to try it again, seeing as I spend enough time running around. Excellent the way you incorporated the audio samplings.
bud
The guitar is a stock sample AI believe - Progressive Solo - which I messed with because it was too clean in it's original state.
Feter
very nice ride thanks for the journey ...!!!
bud
nice to see you again

into the beyond. Great stuff. Lovely mix.

This is really just a little trifle - quick and light. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love it

It's a nice way to pass a flight - and it's always a surprise to hear the results when you get out of the cabin and the noise.
Vic Holman
this turned out pretty cool. the sound bites tend to give it a eery feel. kinda like a flight into the twilight zone.
I personally have nothing against planes.... just heights.
bud
I have to start soliciting homegrown loops from jammers so I can do the skycollab thing. Would have loved to have your guitar up there.
Vic Holman
i could yank some solos out from tunes and you could have away at them. that would be really interesting.
LunaTrick
You slipped the surely bonds of earth with this one!

thanks for stopping by - have a great holiday!

i too love the noise removal tool, just for the weird things it does when you abuse it. cool use of loops too. did you get the salty peanuts or the fake chex mix? we should book a flight to Paris someday, bring some extra batteries and see what we come up. nice one.
bud
it's in the lyrics!
I like the Paris concept - but a greyhound bus from LA to Frisco might be more in my budget.
Enjoy the family and a few days of rest.

jet blue has the best snacks.
this is great. for whatever reason there are certain records that I think of as "flying music" and before I fly i load up the ipod...the Postal Service, Thievery Corporation, etc. I never flew as a kid, my first flight wasn't until my mid twenties, and though i've done a lot of flying since then airports and planes still strike me as kind of alien, like buck rogers comics. Cool listen, thanks!
bud
usually they only have the blue ones - but they added sweet potato for the holidays. I tend to do a bit of flying and have for many years. First the Bose noise canceling headphones and an iPod changed the whole experience - and then the laptop and GB made the it fun and productive. Check out Jet Blue w/Ginsberg

my first skylab project.

Amazing concept, work built in original conditions, nicely done Bud,
I believe that my country is too small to have the time to work on a piece of music in a plane, or then I am too slow !
bud
turn on a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer - eat some chips and sip ginger ale and pretend. Just be f=sure to have a tape of a crying baby playing n the background.
five_extra_arms
Bud,
you are so original!
This is just the coolest thing I've heard all day!!
Great concept and I'm glad the plane landed safely so we could hear this. Although the ending makes me wonder....

bud
needed to get out quick cause we were about to land.
DWL
stratospheric.
3 hours? It'd take me that long to just choose a loop.....
Cheers

the pressurized cabin speeds up the process. Now if I could just get the oxygen to drop down without causing a stir.

...Awesome that you could put this together ON A PLANE BETWEEN CALIF. AND NYC. There is such a "real" feel to the recording, like I am riding with you...or riding through the air somewhere...or perhaps in an airport on a very rainy day waiting for my flight to take off. There would be no end to the visuals you could put with this. ... Nice, Bud... and then ... you crashed!!! I am so sad.
Peace.
Paul

Thanks for the imagery. Don't be sad - I backed up before I crashed.
egobandit
the coolest revolving constant with jabs of just the right sounds! Sweet as the younger generation says

Thanks Tim.

Bud, They actually let you take your guitar out and lay tracks on the plane? (lol)
Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,
mvh : )
bud
the guitars are loops. Thanks for giving a listen.

Just how much music on MJ is written on planes, in cars, while sitting in cafes, etc. Not just tunes like this which were actually created and recorded while sitting in transit, but those whose ideas were born in those moments of unfilled waiting that have become the mainstay of the modern traveler.
This is very cool, not just in its creation, but its sound. The captured sounds and the backing blend so well. Very nice. It'll be interesting to see what kind of new creations will come about now that recording a true multitrack tune can be done even on the iPhone.
bud
mobile music making is getting interesting and will only get more so as time goes on. I find it the best way to pass the time while traveling.

than never!
cool sound effects - like the strings background - spacey guitar licks - the auto filtered voices is freaky
thanks
