Description:
I started this song in mid-November with a very rough-and tumble, live-mic exploration of chords, melody and word pictures. That 12-minute Zoom H2 recording sat for a few weeks.
Just few days before Christmas, prompted by Wayne Hamilton's Christmas song offering to members of the Minnesota Association of Songwriters, I decided to do a quick vox + guitar layout of the song. It helped me to solidify the song concept. That recording was fairly bad because of a straining voice, twangy guitar and lousy guitar playing. That guitar version is also posted here at MacJams.
Last night, I rebuilt the song from scratch in Logic Express 7, using my Ensoniq ESQ-1 digital music synthesizer for MIDI input into virtual instrument tracks. By selecting and modifying various instrument presets, I was able to create an orchestral soundtrack behind my voices. And yes, all the voices you hear are my own, including the falsetto.

Lyrics:
God, in glory, brings a star so bright.A son is born in a humble barley mesh.
Behold, the savior, our new light,
a child of destiny, the Word made flesh
Mary, full of grace, will know the sorrow and the joy
of bringing forth the one whom the prophets long foretold
Joseph, by her side, will help raise up the boy,
a child of destiny, the World made whole.
[refrain]
Praise the Christ, lift up the baby.
Raise the Spirit that lives inside you.
Grow the love of Holy Family.
Grow, the child of destiny.

ye ..I agree with you ..the orchestral suits you more now ...
your voice shapes much more than ever ..still I would suggest
all strings ensembles and no pluckin and piano like sounds !
thnx alot for sharin !!!

Oh my, I don't know if I can handle strings. I need to be able to have this song accessible for piano and guitar -- for performance in church. But I will play around with violins at some point. It's hard to get good-sounding synth strings on a "shoe string budget." There's nothing like real catgut.

Feter: I sent a MIDI file to you, exported from Logic Express. Thank you for offering to smooth this out with strings. I suppose it is a little too bouncy. I am just starting to learn keyboard technique.

I just didnt know the actual speed of the song so I made up mine
and lowering the scales two steps for more depth tone to your
voice ..ye I tweaked couple places but I dunno if you loved the
outcome ...let me hear what ypou think my friend ..and thank you
for letting me workin on this nice song ....good writing by the
way I enjoyed the orchestration you made ..!!!

The MP3 file you sent sounds very good! The strings are sensitive and flowing, yet so powerful. Perhaps a little slow. But I will try singing to it! And thank you for pitching it a little lower.
The violins aren't too bad for synths. I don't know why I am so afraid to use them. I guess I realize that the few times I have heard a live orchestra play, I am completely stunned by the beauty and presence of the strings. There is a special attack, sustain and decay which synths rarely attain.
What software are you using these days? Fruity Loops or something else?
Can you send me your MIDI file?

This is great, Richard. It's been a long time since I have heard your music (sorry!), and I must say, I have never heard you in better voice. Your voice is a beautiful, expressive instrument, and this arrangement is beautiful. Everything about this is very impressive; great job!
