Description:
The piano is not my number one instrument of solace - but occasionally I find it to be an able vehicle for deep thought and meditation. This is just a short improvisation around the theme of reluctancy and letting go. As much as we celebrate the new year, it is also a time when we must yield up the past and let go of some of its portents. Often, this is hard to do and met with some reluctance. Nevertheless, I wish you all a happy new year. After this reflection, there will be more upbeat music to come.

You and I know the late night hours with a solo instrument!

...thing about this delicate piano solo is your control throughout. Each note seems to be measured carefully for tempo and dynamic and the effect is startling. Ultimately, it is SO "reluctant" that you leave your listener up in the air at the last note, hoping, somehow, for more...and then delivering only the air. (I could use a final chord, but that's the romantic side of my mind speaking!). Very beautiful miniature with very beautiful playing as well.
Peace.

Your comment means a lot to me. My playing is nowhere near as accomplished as your in terms of piano gymnastics... but I try to play within my abilities. For me, it's Satie, Debussy rather than Rachmaninoff or Prokofiev - if you know what I mean. The last note is intended as slightly awkward... a part of the lingering reluctance. So glad and humbled by your response.

I enjoyed this sometimes deep piano improvisation.
I need to listen to it 'deeply' to understand it. The piece seems not to have any noticable Lunatrick idiosyncracies but I've only heard it once. I have yet to listen to it properly.
I look forward to your upcoming upbeat music.
Take care.

I try to defy my idiosyncrasies as often as I can. When you feel you can understand it... perhaps you can explain it all to me. Cheers...
Very smooth piano emotion, and a Keith Jarret influence. What piano sample or software? A nice mellow warm sound
LunaTrick
I love Jarret's work... but can't touch him. This is the GB grand with some tweaking. Appreciate your listening!

and very effective emotionally. I agree with what you say in your description. My wife and I were just discussing the ennui of the season. You have a good touch with the keys and it really seems to connect to the heart - more than the head.
LunaTrick
You're a man of deep sensibilities... which flows into your music.

My mission is to keep you on your toes.... (I know you and Alannah love that word!)

love that image, have done a lot of stuff like that. Where is the back drop it looks familiar. Sure sounds like a meditation to me. Is there anything you don't play? I wish i had taken piano lessons a bit more seriously, love the sound of a well played piano. Great job.
LunaTrick
It was a meditation... and I am able to fall back on a couple of years of piano lessons... plus extensive theory.... although my piano playing has become gutteral in a way.

Daniel - i had no idea you were such a magnificent pianist! This is quite amazing as an improv, and as Paul just said, your delicate control is really remarkable. And I also agree with the sentiment - a time of newness but also of letting go. Thanks Daniel
LunaTrick
As with Paul, I'm thrilled to get your feedback. I try to make up for my lack of ability with subtleties like dynamics and space.

A familiar theme for me. I find music to be very therapeutic and use my piano often as a way to process and purge. There is so much space in this piece, so much room for thought and breath. Meditational to be sure, but engaging as well. The dissonance captures my attention and challenges me to look closely within, the silence in between gives me space to examine what I find. You have a firm yet emotive touch on the piano that makes this all the more powerful. A beautiful improvisation - I can imagine you leaning intently over the keyboard, eyes closed, letting this flow out of you, letting this go. Lovely Daniel. Thank you.
LunaTrick
I use all my instruments therapeutically and sometimes the piano can go places beyond my world of strings - although in truth, it is a stringed instrument too. Much like the impressionists/expressionists... I like to combine dissonance with patches of tonality... seek resolutions that are abrupt or delayed... sometimes not at all. It's all been done... but it's rewarding to keep mining the depths if you know what I mean... and I know that you do. This is meditational piano... and you are the model we all aspire to in that genre.

what Paul said :-) seriously.. you capture the concept of negative space. Less notes are more. Very moving
LunaTrick
For listening and pointing out exactly what I was trying to do.

Beautiful. Fine touch. Intricate harmonies.
Yet a elegant simplicity too.
Thanks Daniel
