shreveport stomp [piano solo]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This piece was written around 1924 by Jelly roll Morton. He recorded it as a piano solo for Gennet that same year and later again in 1928 with his famous piano trio , which consisted of Omer Simeon on clarinet and Tommy Benford on drums. This is almost stride but nevertheless remains just inside the ragtime boundary line.

I got this version from an old sheet music copy from the twenties and it was recorded on Christmas eve 2008.

Just what the world needs...
more happy music, especially by the ol' Jelly Roll ;-)
This is way cool and great fun. Thanks for recording it (a pleasant way to spend Christmas Eve, I trust) and for posting. Cheers.

Shreveport Stomp
GOOD GRIEF - this is INCREDIBLE!! You have got SERIOUS piano chops - i think i'd have to practice this everyday for a year to come even remotely close to a performance of this quality! GREAT work - i love the genre, let's hear more of solo piano from you!!

Karen - hello
praise indeed coming from another pianist, especially one as good as you. Thank you, I was always aware of this sort of style long before I ever knew what it was, my mother used to play a kind of what I think is called butterfly stride which I always used to watch closely, so fast and light it always looked impossible to me when I was a kid.

Thanks again Karen.

So...
....do you have to wear a handlebar mustache and an arm garter to play this music? Or maybe a pocket watch and a fancy hat? Good stuff by the way.

you are right
and I would definately describe this as comedy music and why not ? as Frank Zappa once said - Does humour belong in music.

Thanks for listening,

J.

thanks for listening
the music I think must be from the 1920's as it's falling apart, it's not completely accurate but close enough. It's nearer the 1928 verion than the 1924 one. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Nobody Better
John - Great playing, as always, but this really captures the spirit and flare of the time.

You're the best.

thanks for your comments Tim
it's quite a difficult piece to play but there's so much life in it and the melody goes into places I know I'd have never thought of.
