Okay. Here's my first submission of 2009. I hope this is a great year for all of us!
Lyrics:
© 2008, stacey k. blacki was skating on thin ice
the water was warm below
and though i tried to make nice nice nice
i knew it would never show
because opacity
is my strongest quality
you'll never see through me
i was tired and worn out
i wanted a chance
i kept pleading now now now
but i knew the circumstance
and my opacity
is my leading quality
you'll never see through me
where has the time gone
where has my mind gone
i've lost possibilities
once i have drawn on
my limits and withdrawn
will you accept me
i was hoping you'd be there
to help me float away
i kept asking where where where
but i knew you would not obey
because opacity
is my favorite quality
you'll never see through me

vocals, very dreamy.
Instantly felt relaxed with this tune. The minimal drums and soft bass really helped here.
Nice work

Like icy contrails frozen in time, the grooves of our personal moments are most easily recognized in retrospect. Still, they reveal only the patterns of our motions that lie on the surface and not the emotions within that propel us across the pond.
We're all skating on thin ice in this life, relying on opacity to obscure the fragility of the uncertain surface we traverse. Perhaps that's why *figure eights* are such a popular exercise... wishful skating.
A lovely, moody song... icy blue. ;)

So beautiful and soulful. Your voice along with the lyrics just tears at the heart. Absolutely wonderful.

,,,you had me right from the moment that you used 'opacity' in a song in a way that not only worked, but worked WELL...
Intelligence and a gift for melody, both. That used to be against the rules. And an open-hearted song about closedness...that's pretty darned excellent, too...
Cool Rhodes chords, and I usually don't like Rhodes chords. Perfectly chosen key for your voice, and the singing is emotive while being undramatic, not overblown...
What a start for 2009, Stacey...

Very good performance on this piece. I am new to MJ and I have made it a point to not comment if I can not offer suggesion for improvement, but you really don't need any on this piece. The only thought I have is that, while your song sounds great the way it is, I think it could be arranged to build the emotional tension to a peak right before the last verse, then back down to finish. That would require a lot more instrumentation and production work, which you don't really need to be effective here - it is just the way I approach my music and I hear it for this song. Very Nice Work ! Thanks for sharing with us!

I hope that what was the cause for the disappointment has passed, as this is really a success. Wonderful harmony and the dynamics to the simplicity of limited instrumentation balances your vocal control and projection. I liked the bass lines you have on this.
And wishes for the best of things for you this year.

It reminds me of Janice Ian, back in the days when I was kind of fragile and unsure of myself. I like the meter change up in the second verse.

like Ed, i was taken by "opacity" and pretty impressed with all the rest too. beautiful vocals, as always. i love the percussion in this, great job with putting those drums together and a nice beat. really cool organy keys sound. this is nice and soft. dreamy background vox. very nice tune - love the strings helping in the back to move things along a little. great job!

Stacey, Great start to 2009. Hey! A bass! Good job. Sparse orchestration that is perfect for the track. Warm, melodic, delightful lyrics with lovely harmonies. All the usual ingredients of a Stacey Black track...present! Thank you...

A truly pro standard voice and a strength of song writing to match. As others have said the Rhodes works well, but once the full arrangement kicks in the song lifts to a different level. I also love all the different things you do with backing vocals and harmonies - really great!

If you don't mind the comparison, this sounds like the Dixie Chicks when your backing vocals comes in. I really love your arrangements. Great backing vocals. What's up? This is one that should be on the radio. Another great one.
