Field Recordings Of A New Species

Description
Well it's about damn time I get something else posted here. The listener should note that to my knowledge no new species were actually recorded during the making of this song, I just thought it was an amusing title.

So this piece came about as I was trying out the new (free download) of Native Instruments Kore player. The last section of the tune was actually the first riff that I came up with. I also just purchased the Remix Tools Jampack and am thrilled to finally have expanded drumset sounds to work with. Most of the synth sounds come from the Kore player soundbanks, the drums are from Remix Tools sounds and those cool Boldt sounds. The fat synth pad is from the Crystal soft synth. The bass sounds are from my ancient Korg DW8000 synth. The sax is me playing my Cannonball "Big Bell" Tenor through an SM57 mic. The "Foghorn" sound is from an idea I've had for a while using the sax (thanks for letting me get it out of my system). The congas are real and also played by myself. Windchime sounds came from our backyard patio. All the drum programming and melodies are my own doing and there are no pre-recorded loops. Oh yeah there is also a quarter plopping into a bucket of water that I recorded and synced to the drums in the 2nd section.

My goal was to create a sort of sonic travelogue while still tying everything together with a few common elements. In my mind the song goes something like this: Jungle/Underwater/Big City/Western Suburb/Night Sky & Beyond. Your results may vary. Thanks for listening.

yo
loved @ 1:43 dude...almost has a female shriek feel to it, very dark. This track progresses nicely and love all the ambience thrown in. When your sax kicks in its dope dude. loved the short bursts. I like how you chance it up shortly after the 3:00 mark. you switched the vibe around almost like the light at the end of the tunnel..and uplifting resolution of sorts...youve earned yourself a fan for this...very nice. BTW i love your sax man it sounds great.

I am lovin the vibe
on this, it's a track to unwind to. Very sweet moments made with the core, i could not get that much out of mine and my mac does not like it too much. That sax really sounds fitting and played so well. Change of ambiance was cool, the over all feeling from this track is great.

Thanks
Gotta love free soft synths and effects. Yeah, the Kore player seems to work fine for me, though I'm not doing much sound tweaking because they have 6-8 versions of one sound patch that you can use which more than covers any tweaks that I would want to make. Thanks for stopping by.

groovy
A great groove... thats a Cannonball allright - - nice platform for it. I like how you had the dry sound and then smoothed it out later on the reverb. Nice work.

Thank You
I haven't heard enough other Cannonball saxes to know if they have a distinct sound, but I've been very happy with the results I've been getting with mine. From one sax guy to another, your comments mean a lot.

Do like this....
Hi, I really like this track, with all of it's different layers. Some really nice brass work there, particularly liked the stabs, breaking up the beats.
Earned another fan here too...nice one

cool.
a mix of "ethnic" sound and clever synthetiser effects.
I am not so sure about the sax' on the second part but anyway it softens and fits well after a while.

Otherwise, very original and not at all boring.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks
Appreciate your thoughts. I agree that everything may not be fitting together as smoothly as it could. I actually like the sax at the end but I may revisit it and try to incorporate at least the beginning of it better, but I need a break from this song for a bit. Thanks for stopping by.

Great -
Nice sax, first of all. The synths and drums are also a great soundbed. The first transition point at 56 seconds could have used a but of a conga fill, but otherwise, really smooth transitions and entrances. The foghorn sound was interesting, but I really loved the sax during the second half. It is definitely 'up front' but really sits will in the mix, too. The title is very evocative, even though you really didn't record any aliens.

Species Observation Achieved.
That musical travelogue feel, definitely accomplished. Kept me interested start to finish, from pulling me in with those initial foghorn sounds.

Also liked your conga segue to the steady, dripping vibe motif bed. Though no specific new species, referenced by sound, the setup with the conga made you almost feel like you were pulling back some vegetation brush to quietly observe a previously un-viewed tribal culture.

So, species or tribal, the setup felt the same-it works, but what the hell.... the tribe members here all play sax---what an observational treat!.

Enjoyed this one, and would love to blast this over some big speakers on a rainy day.

Awesome comments
I believe you have fully understood the intent of the song, though it kind of defined itself after it was complete. Nice to know there are at least a few sax players around here. I liked the new age piece you had with sax, also the collab on Zenith was very cool with the flute and sax. Let me know when you post some new stuff with some horns.

Very nice
and well produced. Love the sax horn at the start, that pulled me in straight away. Cool synth sounds you have chosen (I also have both Crystal and Kore Player). The sax is really well played and very clear, it fits with the music very well. Well done Kicbal, its brilliant.

My pleasure
Thanks for the compliments. I'm pretty new to the home studio mixing stuff, but loving it and delighted with the musical discoveries that I stumble across as I work on my stuff. I hope you check back every once in a while for some new tunes in the works. But beware, I work very slowly.

Big bell roars
Yeah, kind of tribal in the beginning, like Alan Lomax field recordings or something, but then the aliens land with space funk and melt his tape recorder. and then Boss Tenor! Ive got some Native Instruments sounds too. I love the Kore player and you use it well here. Very nice. Congas sound great. More Sax!

Really enjoyed the
entire piece. I was thinking that your new species came to earth to play with musical instruments once they figured out what trunk blows air into what mouthpiece and which tentacles slap what surface in time. Pretty jazzy. Thanks.
