Description
Bit of a demo this one. Written and recorded in less than a hour! I was doing revision for my upcoming exams, and was basically sick and tired of reading. Then I read about the staus quo-states Britain and France in the preface to WWII. "Status Quo" stuck to my mind, and I got out my guitar and a piece of paper and started scribbling down lyrics around some thoughts of a "status quo" situation. And this is what came out of it! Guitar and "lead vocal" recorded in one take, and some backing vox in another. Used a Blue Snowball USB mic which works quite nicely for this kind of thing. No finishing touches in GB, not even reverb. Come as you are!

Hope you enjoy it! As always comments are most welcome!;)

Lyrics
Status Quo

You’re kind of contempt with this situation
You don’t find it all that bad
I try to attempt negotiation
And I know that makes you sad

But I can’t go on
I need to find a key
Cause I think it’s wrong
The things you’re doing to me

I try to hold out a helping hand
And reach for you my right wingman
But you push me back into a pool so dark (I actually sang “black” by mistake)
Your skin is known but your face is stark

I can’t go on
I need to find a key
Cause I think it’s wrong
The things you’re doing to me

My eyes are empty, my skin is pale
I lie here floating, in this cold river dale
I see you smiling of the times we had
Sweet surrender, I hope you’re glad

But this can go on
I need the key
Cause I know it’s wrong
Look what you’re doing to me

Thanks!
Thank you! Yeah, and about the vocals.. My flat has 2" walls, and to not annoy my neighbors to much I have to keep my voice down. And I did the guitar and vocals in one take, so I couldn't make only the vocals louder unfortunatly.. But thanks anyway for your kind comment! ;)

quid pro quo
Touch of Nick Drake frailty which is nice but looking forward to the version with the levels all clear.
\Don't think it needs anything else like bass or drums..just a bit more polished would be nice cos it's a good song and a decent mix would bring out it's finer subtleties

Thanks!
Definatly! I'm going to make a more polished version, this is the a demo where everthing is quite loose, as you can hear. I might see if I could get a cello on this, I think that would be fitting.

Thanks again for your comment!:D

actually ...
"pushed me back into the black" ... is a great line and I would keep it. I really love tracks like this ... just clean and honest ... BTW run yer neighbors out and bring the vox up some as they are very nice. So all in all do I like this "demo" ?? well ... yes quiet a lot !

Thank you!
Yes, actually I kind of agree with you. After listening to it a couple of times I think I might just keep it! My neighbours will have to bear some singing I guess:P One of the flaws with the Snowball mic, though, is that it hasn't got any possibility to push the signal other than in Garageband. That means that I can't run the signal as hot as I would if I had used my normal recording gear. But I definatly post a cleaned up and boosted version as soon as I make one:)

good demo
nice melody. It's good to get this kind of thing recorded right away, then you can easily remember what you were thinking when you do a 'keeper'. Just one question - in the first line, it seems to me that the word contempt ought to be content. I might be wrong, but, just thought I'd bring it up for discussion. You have a nice voice, and your delivery has a sweet, vulnerable quality.

Content
Actually you're right. It is supposed to be content. I got the lyric transcription wrong, because the first line was originally "I'm kind of contempt of this situation". Then I changed the lyrics around to "You're kind of content with this situation", but I forgot to change mp to n! So thanks for letting me know!

And glad you liked the song, and thanks for you comment!
