Description
This is a dark, pulsating song that I wrote, performed and recorded in about 2 hours yesterday so it's kinda rough around the edges but frankly my heart wasn't into too many re-dos...

Things are going well for me as we move into 2009 but I have my "dark" days. This song is kind of about having one of those yesterday and when I do have a "dark" day I tend to put on some music and forget about the troubles I have and those of the world.

There are two primary guitar tracks
one bass track
Two primary vocal tracks
The final vocal set adds an additional three vocal tracks
The first two lead guitar sets use a standard echo
The final set is two layered leads and the primary lead uses a Zoom GX1 wah pedal
There is some organ and guitar layering in the final section as well.

The vocal backups are pretty heavily processed with flangers and other things to give it a dark feel.

Sorry its not better... I just ran out of creativity!

Lyrics
Goin down
MRH 2008

I often wonder about the state of this world
and the troubles tend get me sad
then I put on a good old song
an the world doesn't seem so bad

I'm just listening to the sound
I'm just letting it fall
I'm taking my time

I'm goin down, goin down
goin down, goin down

Bush is leaving office and Obama stepping up
Stocks diving low and real estate amuck
2009 will be an interesting year
one that I hope is not to filled with fear.

I'm just listening to the sound
I'm just letting it fall
I'm taking my time

I'm goin down, goin down
goin down, goin down

My neighbor just lost his home
Seem his mortgage was NINJA loan
How he got the house just baffles me
He hasn't worked since was 23

I'm just listening to the sound
I'm just letting it fall
I'm taking my time

I'm goin down, goin down
goin down, goin down

We all have a price to pay
for those lived like they owned each day
it will take a while to see this through
so I'll sit and watch Obama's crew

I'm just listening to the sound
I'm just letting it fall
I'm taking my time

I'm goin down, goin down
goin down, goin down

I think
you performed an excellent commentary on the world as it feels to most at this point in time and the music and your vocal performance are in complete sympathy with the mood of the lyrics. Good stuff and just think.... the only way is UP LOL, cheers M

Wow... 2 hours...
this is indeed dark and depressing, but it is also very well crafted in many ways. At first I was going to critique and suggest that you need more of a chord change or instrument change at the chorus since it sounded so even... but then I sat and listened more to the music and words... and I realized that this song is about sitting by idly and watching the world get flushed down the toilet, and being dragged down with everyone else who expects some miracle to be performed by "somebody else" (i.e., a new president)... and I realized that the song itself was lulling me into a feeling of ennui, where I too wanted to just give up and let it happen.

Yikes, Mark! You really captured a visceral feeling here, not a happy one, but I think you did really well. The recording levels are all quite good enough for this, the singing is apropos for the lyrics, and I really like the way you captured the "what does it matter what I do anyway" aspect. It comes across strongly, and I think in an ironic way, that *is* a big part of why the USA finds itself in this spot lately.

Wish I could put stuff together this quickly. Um... now I suddenly feel like I need to volunteer for community service work! :-)

ttfn,
Drakonis

Hey Drak
Well my friend... your stuff is indeed TONS better than this trashy little number... Good things take time.

Yes this is dark and that was intent. I don't often have dark days but when I do they are dark dark dark and this sort of takes that on.

Thanks for the listen and comment my friend!

deeper and down
I like the chord structure and the words.
If you ever feel like going back to this I think it would benefit from a slight clean up but it's a good piece as it is.
I'd maybe change the outro guitar solo sound to something different to the middle lead but that's just my thoughts.
Good stuff and very reflective of the times

Folk
Folk music for the 21st century - this has the vibe of social commentary intertwined with the personal. I certainly the song is a lot better than you seem to give yourself credit for. The lyrics are direct and moving, and smack of truth lived and given sweet expression here. I really like the smoothness of the mix and the instrumentation. Lovely vocal, and some very nice guitar work on this. I think you should not only be proud of what you have done here, but be very proud of how quickly you did this! Astonishing! As for the blues, my friend, what can you do - one foot in front of the other. Thanks for sharing this music and your feelings. You are the man. Kudos, my friend. Peace.

like it
like the changes, melody, singing.
my favourite verse is the one about the neighbour who lost his home.
for some reason I didn't like the second verse as much, the "bush is leaving office"... it's good but not quite as poetic as the others.
the guitar soloing is great.
I can't believe you put that all together in 2 hours... that's pretty impressive.

you've really captured the mood of darkness and foreboding here. It's like generalized depression exquisitely expressed by a very talented musician. Your vocals here are terrific, and the guitar wails in just the right way to say what you're saying. Great work Mark!

Hello Tokai
No no... I used things I was comfortable with and didn't try anything really new. The song is really quite simple and it is the bass track that makes it seem more dark.

I can hear things I would fix if I had spent more time. I guess to me the track was dark enough that I wanted to be done with it.

Thanks for listening and commenting my friend!

about this tunes which makes it soooo easy to listen to. It could have gone on for half on hour and i'd still be nodding my head.
Great lyrics (were they included in the 2 hour session?) that flow really naturally.

Hello Ted
Yes the lyrics were about 15 minutes of the 2 hours! Pretty simple in many ways. Gosh I'm glad you liked it enough to listen longer. That is so cool.

The process I did was to lay down the drums in UltraBeat then played my Yamaha bass to them. That took two takes because I'm a lousy bass player.

Then I put down the guitar backing track. Then did the lyrics and vocal tracks. Last I did the guitar solos which always take me several takes to get right. Then about 30 minutes or so on EQ and effects.

the 60s live!
While this has a 60s feel, political, vibey production. The vocals seem laid back for such a political song, and may seem to lack passion, but it fits the instrumentation very well and makes it more contempaltive and thoughtful. Nicely done.

MarkHolbrook said 310 days ago (January 19th, 2009)
Thank you
Sir for dropping in.

The laid back vocals are part of the whole feel. The song really wasn't intended to be political in nature. In fact it was more of a "I'm just going for a ride" kind of approach to the world right now.

I know that the Bush/Obama reference offended one person here. I didn't mean it that way. That verse sort of implies that Bush created problems and Obama is stepping up to fix them.

That really was not the message I intended. It was more of hey here we got problems, we are seeing a change of the guard. I'm just gonna sit and see what happens.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

I got ..
..a Steve Miller Band live DVD for Christmas, and this would have fit in pretty well with what he does. He would probably have found some sort of idiosyncratic 4 beat lick to play, but wouldn't have needed to change much to make it sound like his. This is meant as a compliment Mark. Love the chord changes, great performance and meaningful lyrics. What more could Steve want ;)

Love it!

I think we may have had the same "dark day." Fortunately it turned into a productive one for us both.

This is a great tune. Heavy subject matter, but such a smooth delivery. So often the "2 hour, rough around the edges" tunes are the best. Though, I have a hard time finding any rough edges on this one.

Great song. Excellent lyrics. So timely and topical.

Potent
For such a laid back tune you caught a primal hook on this one. It's skillfully crafted, and the fact you did it in two hours speaks volumes for your innate talents, but it's disconcerting.

That's not a bad thing, art should cover all the emotional spectrum, and this shines a light on an area that most of us care not to tread. Well done! Thanks for making us think.

Great job on the strings to. Those leads were right in the slot.

Yes it does spark an emotional note which was the intent. I really am not slamming Bush nor endorsing Obama. I'm simply stating the current situation and lamenting that I feel hopeless to help and sometimes I just listen to some great music and let it all go.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and to give such a wonderful comment!

great guitar tone
Everything is very well packaged on this one. I like the lead guitar (is that a guitar or keyboard?). Of course very timely and I like your chord choices and melody for a topic such as this. Your voice is whisper like which again fits the song well. Nice job.

Hi Sean!
The guitar is real. I cranked it through a Zoom G1X pedal to do all the effects. The middle leads are just with the pedal left alone. The ending leads a dual leads, one primary using the Wah feature of the pedal (man am I out of practice on wah technique!) and the second lead is a purposeful echo of the first but an octave up and little wah.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the song and thanks for the listen and comment!

Sorry I missed this, it's lovely
Love the groove you've got going here Mark! It's kind of restrained and poised - a thoughtful rather than an in-yer-face kind of rock song, and the melody is beautiful. The guitar solo and the vocal are similarly restrained, but super smooth and full of life. Impossible to keep still while listening to it, the melody and rhythm are so addictive. The expression of your negative emotions in the song give it a beautiful honesty.

I really like your singing voice too. I mean I REALLY like it. It has a lovely warm soft tone which draws me right in. You have a very natural style of delivery too, which is a delight on the ears and adds to the sincerity of the song.

My personal suggestion - *don't* do a re-do. You captured the heart and soul of the song in this authentic take. If this is what you get when you run out of creativity, you have nothing to worry about! (In music at least.)

Hi Rebsie
Wow... Thank you soooo much! I'm always thrilled when one of the "pros" here on MJ takes a listen. I think your advice is great! I have yet to attempt a redo on any of my songs and I think sometimes, especially in this case this makes sense.

I think when I say "creativity" I want to branch out and try new stuff. My stuff tends to all "sound the same". Guitar ballads. I want to learn knew stuff but I seem to hit the wall.

With works like this one and in fact the last several I tend to work off of a guitar riff and build a song around it. So what do I do when I run out of riffs!? I guess we'll find out soon.

Anyway thanks again sooooo much for the comment and listen!

Watch out for those damn Ninjas!
Great tune Mark. While the subject matter is dark, strangely the song itself is not...at least to me. Like my "No Sorrow" it kind of puts things in perspective.

Lot's of truth in this piece.

And vox, guitars, bass, and mix are all excellent!

Be well friend!

i really like the arrangement and the mood. cool!

i'm somehow thinking of Knopfler - perhaps it's the low-key vocals and the arrangement?

thanks

nice one
Mark I really like this one I like the driving drone off the main beat it takes you with it. This is an example that less is more you don't always have to have a multitude of changes and complicated chord progressions to make it interesting
good one
