Description
The Orbitized version of one of my earliest collaborations, Mermaid (http://www.macjams.com/song/14854). A song from November of 2005, back in the days when I could still whip out a song in three hours and post it at the end. What happened to me since then!? The original was a collaboration with the very wonderful Electro Estate and has ended up being the most downloaded over the years of all the songs I've ever worked on. There was always something that sounded very Orbity about it, so I was very glad when Matt decided to take a crack at a new version and even gladder when I heard the wonderful music and production he added to it. I was thrilled at how he made something new while still keeping everything I loved about Brandon's original song. I had a blast singing with his new track and trying some new things. Having two of my musical best friends at my back gave me the confidence to let it hang out there a little more and I had a lot of fun doing this one.
We hope you guys like this and thanks so much, Brandon, for letting us play with your wonderful music (and that goes double for me).
Matt: I sat on this one for a while after Lisa told me Brandon had encouraged us to tackle it. I really had no clue what to do with the original, given that it was a monster. I think it's Lisa's most accessed song on here and perhaps elsewhere too. It's funny for me to think that we had this one on our album track order list even before we had Orbitized it (like sanitizing, only with much more dirt). One thing I love when people remix songs is when they use the original tracks in a novel way and I wasn't going to alter Brandon's work without paying homage to it, so what you hear here is Brandon's music through my lens. I wanted to use more of the EE drums in this version, but we sort of went AOR mellow gold on it and the original drums sounded too heavy. I promise someday I'll squeeze some EE drums into a song (I still have some tracks I think he posted freely a few years ago lying in wait-Captain Packrat here).
I hope you like this. If you hold this song up to your ears you can hear the ocean. I swear. And all.

Lyrics
Mermaid
I once loved you,
but I fell into the sea and drowned.
The seaweed yanked me under;
the mermaids taught me
sad songs.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
The salt in the water tore off my skin,
left me raw and aching,
but you threw me back in
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
All we had was a lie.
The mermaids swam away
and left me alone.
I learned how to swim
all on my own
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
You found a lifeboat,
sailed off in the spray,
left nothing behind
but the smell of decay.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
I don't want this lie.
I washed up on the rocks
and found a real man,
grew legs so I could walk with him,
I left the past behind.
Lie, lie, lie,
I see you sailing off the horizon,
the wind blows my hair over my eyes
and you are gone.
I'm walking barefoot,
feeling the grass between my toes,
watching the albatross fly.
The smell of sea salt
follows me everywhere,
but the reek of the water
will soon be gone.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
(sad songs)

Great sounds Lisa and Matt (and Brandon!),
I started this before finishing a play of a new version of one of my older tunes, and it just sounds so totally PRO in comparison. Big bass notes, beautiful definition and a great tune to boot.
Love your voice Lisa.
