Mermaid (w/Electro Estate)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
The Orbitized version of one of my earliest collaborations, Mermaid (http://www.macjams.com/song/14854). A song from November of 2005, back in the days when I could still whip out a song in three hours and post it at the end. What happened to me since then!? The original was a collaboration with the very wonderful Electro Estate and has ended up being the most downloaded over the years of all the songs I've ever worked on. There was always something that sounded very Orbity about it, so I was very glad when Matt decided to take a crack at a new version and even gladder when I heard the wonderful music and production he added to it. I was thrilled at how he made something new while still keeping everything I loved about Brandon's original song. I had a blast singing with his new track and trying some new things. Having two of my musical best friends at my back gave me the confidence to let it hang out there a little more and I had a lot of fun doing this one.

We hope you guys like this and thanks so much, Brandon, for letting us play with your wonderful music (and that goes double for me).

Matt: I sat on this one for a while after Lisa told me Brandon had encouraged us to tackle it. I really had no clue what to do with the original, given that it was a monster. I think it's Lisa's most accessed song on here and perhaps elsewhere too. It's funny for me to think that we had this one on our album track order list even before we had Orbitized it (like sanitizing, only with much more dirt). One thing I love when people remix songs is when they use the original tracks in a novel way and I wasn't going to alter Brandon's work without paying homage to it, so what you hear here is Brandon's music through my lens. I wanted to use more of the EE drums in this version, but we sort of went AOR mellow gold on it and the original drums sounded too heavy. I promise someday I'll squeeze some EE drums into a song (I still have some tracks I think he posted freely a few years ago lying in wait-Captain Packrat here).

I hope you like this. If you hold this song up to your ears you can hear the ocean. I swear. And all.

Lyrics
Mermaid

I once loved you,
but I fell into the sea and drowned.
The seaweed yanked me under;
the mermaids taught me
sad songs.

Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
The salt in the water tore off my skin,
left me raw and aching,
but you threw me back in

Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
All we had was a lie.

The mermaids swam away
and left me alone.
I learned how to swim
all on my own
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
You found a lifeboat,
sailed off in the spray,
left nothing behind
but the smell of decay.

Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
I don't want this lie.

I washed up on the rocks
and found a real man,
grew legs so I could walk with him,
I left the past behind.
Lie, lie, lie,
I see you sailing off the horizon,
the wind blows my hair over my eyes
and you are gone.

I'm walking barefoot,
feeling the grass between my toes,
watching the albatross fly.
The smell of sea salt
follows me everywhere,
but the reek of the water
will soon be gone.

Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay

(sad songs)
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay

Firsties!
Great sounds Lisa and Matt (and Brandon!),
I started this before finishing a play of a new version of one of my older tunes, and it just sounds so totally PRO in comparison. Big bass notes, beautiful definition and a great tune to boot.

Love your voice Lisa.

TOP POST!

Never!
We could never forget the Reunion Fest. We put this out early because we thought that legally it didn't qualify for the fest since it wasn't an Orbiting track, but we were going around in circles for a while wondering if we should hold onto it. Now I'm wondering again!

I'm so glad you liked it Neil. Thank you.

Hi Guys......
Awesome, simply (and more complexly) awesome.

The singing has that 'floating' lilting effect and the backing is to die for.

Brilliant.

Take care.

Tops
Sound and vocals made me think of Laurie Anderson, although I think your voice is much richer than hers. Enjoyed the track very much. And I also don't know what happened to being able to whip out new tracks every week or so, but as long as you have tracks like this to revisit and tinker with you have great stuff to share.

Thanks
Bill

New vocal?
Is this a new vocal? Sounds awesome, but you already knew I'd say that, didn't you? This sounds way better through the studio speakers than the laptop's speakers. I really just need to stop trying to listen to music on my laptop, I guess.

New Singing
Absolutely! This is is a new vocal almost completely, although we brought in two tiny bits of singing from the old song just for old times sake. One backing vocal is from the old song, and the final lie lie's. The new music is a lot more potent and the old vocal sounded wishy-washy. I also really wanted to tackle this song again, singing as someone who felt more confident.

This is a different mix than the one I shared with you the other day, so don't give your laptop speakers too hard a time. ;) Thanks Jim!

a sonic canvas
of large proportions. A genre title does not hold all the cool elements assembled here. EE makes some cutting edge tracks, and to hear this one with master Matt's touch and Lisa's vocal is making my day.

Nice revisit
Its much much better than the original, although I do miss some of those drums at the end. This version doesn't need them, I think I was just used to hearing them kick in. Great production from both of you!

Sound very, very good
Unfortunately I am on the road, forgot my headphones at home, and I am sure my PC speakers doesn't give justice to the sound at all... Great electronica behind Lisa's marvelous voice, I really love the "Lie, lie, lie" line... Downloaded, I want to hear this song with some real bass speakers! :)

Super Duper
This is super double duper as always. Matt's production is astounding. Just jaw dropping. The vocals fit like a glove. Your artwork for this song however makes you look like you've been munching on too much seaweed! Anyway kudos to all! It's always a treat to hear new music from the dynamic duo!

This is the awesome sound...
...of me stomping off in petulant envy... Yes, there's a sound to that... And it has lots of reverb on it...

This is amazingly 3-D in good headphones. I'd swear that sounds are going up and down as well as side to side. Like being in some echoing ocean cave...

Very assured vocals, Ms. Purdy... You guys are quite the team. Now be quiet, I have to go do some more stomping...

Jeez louise Lisa, your voice sounds wonderfully seductive on this. This is a stunning new version guys - the production here is at a level thats beyond me... like a dog watching a card trick.

I'm always so happy to know you've listened and enjoyed, Steve. It is a lonely lyric. I originally wrote this song at the end of the darkest period of my entire life and the lyrics do reflect that, but thankfully that time is long past. Whew. :)
