Description
Kevlar of JOAN used to send me cassettes of their music from time to time and then one day he told me I could hear them online at a place called MacJams. What an incredible revelation that was. Not only did I find their music but I also found a supportive community that loved what they were doing. JOAN had it going on - and I got to meet some fine folks and dip my toes in the water. Around the same time I got a new computer with GarageBand in it and immediately sat down and cobbled together my very first tune using loops only (I thought that was the coolest thing at the time) and throwing the work of one of my favorite poets on top. On June 21, 2005 I posted Periscope Graves and the rest is history.
Rather than go back and try to improve on my original effort - I decided to simplify it to a solo guitar and voice performance. One take, one track, no fixes.
It's taken me four years to finally keep it simple. WARNING - this is not a feel good number.
I love this place and the people in it. Thanks Jiguma for putting this festival together.

PS - this was posted before my mother recently passed away - not in response to that event.

What a sad song
but brilliantly done esp considering that it was done in one take, well done Bud.

Kevin, I like the bare bones approach to this song. So different from the original. Which was cool as well.

But this time around I hear the vocals so much better and the whole song takes on a totally different feel.

very nicely done.

Simple...
...is better, Bud. I have found that, too. With the ability to do 12 or 15 or 20 tracks, it's just refreshing to hear a song in its barebones one-instrument-one-voice original. What a wonderful age we live in where we have so many choices for musical expression...And isn't it ironic that we always (finally) come back to the most basic expressions? ... I am glad that I get to hear your new (and old) music so frequently.
Peace.
Paul

Just get alone -
grab one of your songs - play along on an acoustic for a minute or two - then cut a take. It's a testament to you and others here that I'm comfortable enough to do this. It may suck - but it's the best I could do at the moment.

Maybe
Maybe it's not feelgood, but it sure is effective - heartfelt and thought-provoking. Great words, and a terrific performance. Sometimes keeping it simple is just what is needed, and the only thing that works. And this works brilliantly. I think I've said it before, but it's worth saying again, there is a definite Ian Curtis to your vocal for me that adds another layer to this performance. Magnificent. Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

Cool
Have you ever done something like this here? So simple, and sung with emotion, but it's really kind of hard for me to capture that like you have here.

bud said 1593 days ago (February 6th, 2009)
No - I don't think I ever have
many of my "produced" songs are just a series of one takes cranked out quickly and mixed in a hurry - but I've never done this before. Actually I have come to think of it - but it was more involved. It was the song Easy on Yourself for the Coffee House challenge. That was one take but with a drum machine and bass sequence running beside the guitar and vox.
As for the emotion - life dealt lemons.

Love it
Sorry I'm late to this one. Love the simple approach. Never heard the original. I could really feel the words. I like this dirgy style from time to time. Very tempting, it must be, to want to add to this. But, I think you made the right choice here.

Great stuff,

Dave

NOt cheery, no, but
art encompasses all emotions and the trick here is that your sense of art brought you to the simple approach and let the guitar and vocal simply support the main instrument, i.e., the lyrics. I like it Bud, your voice is an easy listen and has great expressive qualities; so tell another story dude, I'm ready.

So much of your feeling
is apparent in the way you sing this and your playing. I like the intimacy of it. And simple is easy to relate to, as if we could sing about our feelings just like this. Thank you.
