I Feel Like I'm Falling (MJRF)

 Genre: Folk-Rock

After receiving GargeBand as a gift from two of my daughters in the spring of 2004, I wrote my first two "non-family" themed songs. Like many I searched the internet to see if there was a place to submit songs for others to hear and respond to. I soon found MacJams.

This is one of two songs I first submitted at MacJams in June of 2004. The other was "Dreamers Like Me." This one has always been one of my favorites. I uploaded a remix in 2006. Shortly after that I lost the GB master file. I had hoped to redo the entire song for the festival, but it didn't happen. So what I have done with this new version is take that last 2006 mix (which included new vocals and electric guitar riffs) and run it through ChannelStrip to create what is a clearer and more unified mix. I also cut the drum loop intro. The song still deserves a redo... maybe for the next reunion.

The song is about searching and longing for something more in life, a transcendent and lasting home. It's set to rather upbeat, fast-paced music.

Sometimes I feel like I’’m falling
Sometimes I feel so all alone.
Sometimes I think I’m going nowhere.
Sometimes I want to go home,
But I just don’t know the way.

Another day, they say, another dollar.
What’s it get you? Only bread.
It’s a living! But that’s a question.
So you’re full, you’re still feeling dead.

Who’s your friend? Your wife, your son, your daughter?
Who walks with you the extra mile?
What would I give to find an answer?
Separate the truth from the lies.

The grass, they say, is always greener,
Once you’ve reached the other side.
So you run, but never get there.
Another dream of yours has died.

The other day as I was working,
Customers in my face.
I cried, “Hey what’s the problem?”
I think it’s me and not this place.

It’s the question through the ages.
What’s the purpose of it all?
On and on the battle rages,
In my head and in my heart.

Do we live this life for no damn reason?
Something says there’s something more.
Where’s the way, hey when’s the season,
That leads me to that ancient door?

Don’t you want to go home?

Great lyrics Jack
And your delivery of them is spot on. This is great as is, but I can also see potential for a redo, if for no other reason than you've learned a lot since you did this version. And that new knowledge and experience will allow you to make changes and do things in ways you didn't know about before.

Never the less, I really like the song and the sounds you put together for with version. It's a great song my friend.

p.s. I've have some ideas for minor tweaks on the lyrics if you want to hear them. Mostly just a word or re-phasing of the odd line here or there. Let me know Jack.

to do, or to redo....
Hey Ed, thanks for the nice comments. I really appreciate your opinion on the song. As I said, it's one of my favorites, especially since it was born out of some of my own personal dissatisfaction and struggles at the time.

Sure, send along any lyric suggestions. And thanks again.

Light and dark
The fast pace really carries this. It has a tremendous energy and charm, the perfect vehicle for the words ... contrasting chirpy melody with dark sentiments.

Rebsie, your phrase captures the song. Funny, I had more than a few songs that have unified contrast between "light" music and more somber lyrics. Thanks for visiting and for your thoughts.

free falling
great, fast pace rocker.

fits well into the early '70's Jackson Browne/Poco/Eagles sound. Then again you do live in So. Cal. where it all started.

I am stuck in the late sixties, early seventies.... hopelessly. Thanks Vic.

Same sentiment here. My mother-in-law once told me that being a father, active in family, caring for and the well being of your children is a feat in itself. I always kept that in consideration. Evidently that copy of GB was a gesture of appreciation. You make a difference one way or another. Fine tune that I remember listening to before. The mix sounds great. A nice addition to the reunion. Thanks for sharing.

searching? yes and no...

I have found "that Home" (or that Home found me). Yet, that doesn't exempt me from struggles... but it's a struggle that is anchored by a secure hope (knowing the struggle and extreme cost Christ took willingly for me)... that makes sense of it all... the why are we here, to - why is this happening, to - why do I sometimes act and think the way I do that I abhor, etc.? Why would I long for something real, something not broken (me) where I truly belong? that inward hunger points to the existence of true food just as physical hunger points to my refrigerator! A food that heals and satisfies. Like I say in the song, "something says there's something more." OK, sorry, enough of my ramblings.

John, I'm always glad to have you stop in and always glad to find one of your songs. Thanks.

Good Winter song
Jack, you always manage in inject a sense of hope into lyrics that speak of lost dreams. There is always that ancient, open door. It was good to hear this one again. I really like how you mixed this.

lost and found, our hope...
the redemptive story, eh? The dark side of our human lives need not be glossed over, especially in light of that part about being sought out, found, forgiven, and brought into fellowship with Him.

Roxylee... thanks.

I think you are
"hopefully" stuck. You ask all the same questions that we are meant to ask. "...an unexamined life is not worth living." I would like your voice to be a little more in front of the music, if that makes any sense. As always, you drafted important and profound lyrics. How about adding a harmonica? It has the seeking or questing presence. Thanks...for speaking for all of us.

Hi Jack
The chorus gives the song a good sing-along feeling. The bass and kick pattern works good together with the acoustic guitar and pushes the song forward. Feels like I'm riding a horse, galloping into the sunset:)

surf music for Philosophers
this has an authentic early sixties pop feel... and while they would sing about cars and girls (Girls will eventually lead us to Philosophical questions) you take this breezy pop ditty and spring the loaded questions... well framed lyrically too.... nothing here is going to turn the listener off, but instead catch the ear... "ancient door" great image...

my answer is Yes i want to go home.... just, not quite yet

Gee, a Jack song I seem to have missed...
...and, once again, this is reminding me of one of my old ones. I'm not just making this up, ya know. I think we must've had parallel pathways into our middle years or something...

I really like the rhythm, and your vocal, and the lyrics... good, singable melody, too... I wish the whole level was up just a tick. Maybe two ticks. And maybe just the merest bit more of the vocal you in the overall blend...

But for the millionth time, Jack, that good heart of yours comes through, and all other considerations in my world are secondary...

separated by 6 degrees...

or something like that?

AS I wrote above, this was my first song at MJ... second one I ever wrote that wasn't "family." And it came about due to a low time in my life after moving back to Santa Barbara and taking a job that was under-utilizing me (after almost 30 years working for myself). Needless to say, a rough transition. The lyrics came to me while working... boy I was feeling down, but it helped to be able to write this song... I was brought back to the truth and hope of the "Ancient Door," and that ultimately their is only One who doesn't disappoint.

The original GB file is lost... no adjusting individual tracks. I'll have to wait until Capitol Records signs me and I rerecord this! LOL.

Thanks much Ed... Really appreciate reading your comments.

Ego, I wanted the chorus to be set apart... a falling feeling, and echoing as I sang (ramp up the reverb). I think maybe I got there. Thanks.

I like this Jack ..

it appeals to the folkier side of me. Made me think if you steered it folkier than rockier (bit in limbo here)... I imagined it not being out of place for someone like Mike Scott (solo stuff) to perform. Add a little fiddle/mandolin in here and there .. it certinaly romps along at a good driving pace. Enjoyed, thanks for the re-post (think I missed the earlier upload).
