Description
Here is one of the first songs I posted when I first signed up here in late 2006. Like everything I'd done up until then (and, come to think of it, ever since then), it's entirely midi, using the computer keyboard to enter all notes and automation. It suffers a bit for its midi-ness (especially in the 'horns' section); but it's my kid, dammit, so I'm proud of it.....!

I apologize in advance for no download.

Cool Afropop!
Apologies accepted.I understand the no-download but why?
It´s a cool piece. Those guitars are pretty realistic for midi guitars, so is the bass and the perc.
At the beginning of the horns, they sound for some seconds like "berrantes" do you know that instrument?
I have a midi interface but it so bad i can´t make it work with my eg101 so i´ve been avoiding midi.Sooner or later, then I will have to face it.

Don't know berrantes
I will look into it though.
In the meantime, I don't offer the download because I have sold the rights to this a few times now, and it could understandably piss off the people who've paid for it to see it available for free.....

Cheers,

Oh, how much fun...
I had listening to this. I was thinking of marimbas and glockenspiels and I am not quite sure why. I love the thing. Thanks.

Be Proud
Nice job. Some very interesting tonal combinations here. I like the overall sound and appreciate your effort with the midi horns. I guess when you (or I) am rich and famous there are very nice (and very expensive) virtual orchestra instruments out there, but until then be proud!

Thanks
Bill

Now that you mention it
When we are rich and famous enough, there are some very nice PEOPLE out there who can actually play the instruments for me. I will be thrilled to pay them whatever they ask for when that day comes!
Thank you for the kind words,

Great bit of programming Jim
Some unusual choices in voicing, but for this tune it seems to work just fine. Nice piece Jim

Thanks, Ed!
I sure like to make those unusual choices that work out in the end. Too bad I can't do that on a regular basis....!

Great to see you here.

Hey Chris!
Thanks for stopping by!
It all went pretty fast, actually; the planets were all in alignment, and everything dropped into place in a few hours. The horns were a last minute addition for a dance company that wanted to use it (I've always wanted to write a real horn section for this, but never got around to it) . Getting a good mix eluded me, so I asked a buddy of mine to mix it in PT and this is the result.
Thanks again, bro. Talk to you soon,

Bows
I sure like Michael Brecker; he had an admirably democratic approach to music. Everything from playing backup for Joni Mitchell to going WAY out on a limb with the Instant Composers Pool.

Thank you for lending your ears.

Hey Jim,
Glad to see you thought this gem needed another listen. It certainly warrants and deserves it, now that your following has broadened considerably since the early days. I always told you they would come! Glad to hear you sold this baby a couple times over. Congrats!

I don't have that one
but I do have a ton of early Nonesuch stuff, lots of King Sunny Ade and some oddball 80's compilations on tape. This song grew out of the lead guitar line (which was the result of a midi experiment); the Afro-pop angle was pretty obvious by then, so I just fleshed it out along those lines.

Thanks very much for listening, Bill!
