Then the Rain (MJRF)

Description
Sorrow-then the rain
cleansing happiness undone
fields dark for planting

To my friends, in their times of sorrow...wherever and whenever you may be...

I recorded this tune my first year, here. Got some really nice comments and some suggestions about recording technique. Took some time to change the EQ and reverb and remove a very little "snag"...and this is how it turned out. It's in this form on my CD, "Above the Surface" (http://cdbaby.com/cd/bobprince).

Thank you MacJams...

Exquisite playing in the Hedges/Kotke mode... colourful chordwork... super dynamics. That Fernandez sounds a treat... I'd love to try one! Excellent work!

Kottke...
...was a big influence. I'll investigate Hedges. Thanks for the tip!

I got the Fernandez in LA when I couldn't afford this awesome handbuilt at a luthier's shop. Japanese company had hired luthiers from Spain's famous Fernandez company to take on some apprentices. He told me, basically, that it was a no-brainer. I couldn't have agreed more. I love this guitar...

Thank you.

Gorgeous
Wow, this is beautiful, Bob. What a gift you have. And captured with authentic warmth and richness of tone.

I probably shouldn't say this, but I love the string-squeak! I always think a judiciously placed bit of finger-noise enhances the character of an acoustic piece.

guitapick said 3209 days ago (February 4th, 2009)
That's funny...
When I was studying classical guitar, everyone was so into Segovia's ability to minimize those "annoying squeakers"...
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Sir Segovia's got hands the size of a grizzly bear's paws.
But I tried and tried 'till I got pretty good at it...
...'till one night, while I was playing, I thought to myself:
"Hmmmm...I actually LIKE that squeak in that spot...and that one...in FACT..."
Couldn't agree with you more, Rebsie...a "judiciously placed" bit of mouse noise is sweet...and sometimes unavoidable...
"It is what it is", as they say.

...
it's always nice to hear good guitar players. I love the 'real' guitar sound. good tone and I like the way you pluck the strings, i can't see you playing, but I like the way you 'dig' the sounds out. I play heavy handed because I don't practice enough to develop a light touch, but here (to me) it sounds like you meant to claw those melody notes out while keeping a delicate touch on those chords. I dig it.

Squeek

Beautiful.

I enjoyed reading your exchange with Rebsie on the squeeks - that often we work so hard to "be" like some mentor, and then one day the realization comes that that isn't you ... and how liberating those moments are in the development of personal artistic expression.

This exquisite recording has a number of those little touches - giving it a warm and distinct personality.

Given that this is another fav...
... I can't seem to recall how I fav'd it and didn't leave a comment, Bob. Hopefully that's not a habit. Really digging the warm gentle texture of this piece. There's also a sense of a contemplative pain that might be catered by emptiness ias well, but it's laced with hope and something of as "much" value, beyond what seems to be of the present...

Another mindful piece, Sir. Beautiful! Really nice work! Thanks, Bob. Really appreciate the offering. Dion

it is a beautiful guitar, always. the notes fall like bittersweet rain. often, we are angry at the rain. it gives us discomfort. we get wet. but the rain washes away dust. it cleanses and brings life. we see rain in a new light. it gives us comfort now. this music gives me comfort now. thank you. 0x0

It breathes so well:
Why is it that when we think of rain, we think of acoustic guitar? I think it's the natural sound of those strings. You ring 'em good here. I really appreciate the feeling behind each strike. What great pauses in the melodic pace. It's as if the notes are sung, and there's breath between the notes.

Someday...
...you'll change that avatar. But, for now: that's a sweet lookin' Strat...

When I recorded this piece, I had the mic tilted up a bit more than usual. As a result, you hear my breathing more than usual as well. But I heard that same "breathing between the notes" quality that you're talking about and decided that it complemented the sound perfectly. So I left it as is.

Thanks for the listen, Bob.
