Description:
I wrote this poem while on retreat at a Benedictine monastery. I made the face at a friend's studio a week or so after.

Lyrics:
I made a baby of lace and clay,
a girl child, a daughter.
Lovingly worked the wet earth,
crafted chubby arms and legs
and the smallest of hands.
She got my eyes, and luckily
your nose.
Held her up to starlight,
bathed her in moonlight,
called her my own,
gave her my name,
and prayed for the breath of life
to fill her lungs.
I have seen miracles from less,
but there were no cries.
(Perhaps if I’d offered up a rib.)
I cradled her and kissed her head,
painted her with garlic and blood,
pit-fired her for days,
a pottery face and darkened glaze,
my lack of skill apparent in her
dull disfigured gaze,
a thing of horror and charred beauty.
My sister’s children would not play
with her,
though she bore my name,
and I introduced her as my child,
their cousin.
Their mother averted their eyes
in shame,
called my daughter a grotesque doll,
and left me to my lifeless issue,
my shunned offspring,
my stillborn daughter.
And in rage this father dashed
his daughter to the wall,
baby broken and no more.
And the shards bore no family
resemblance.

That is so sad and hopeless - in so many ways. Very
interesting sound effects. Eerie.

Thanks. A friend of mine listened, and said, "You broke your baby!" I really
liked what I think this is the strongest of my recordings so far. The first take
of the background beats were better, but GB didn't keep them (I'd cut and
pasted them from another project, then deleted that project and they went
away, leaving me to try to reproduce them). Oh well. I've since learned to save
as archive a lot.

I did this before I got the keyboard. The mess of sound at the beginning is
me saying, "This is a test. I dropped my beer!" And the beats were the sounds
of the can banging on the computer stand with ping pong echos (you can still
hear "beer beer beer" if you listen). Pretty hard to reproduce something like
that. I grabbed the unadulterated part from an early aiff export, but they were
better before.
