Description
A Rebsie-Luna Trick collaboration has been on the cards for a while. So I sent Daniel a track of my guitar-twanging to play with, and was blown away by what he sent back.

You may have noticed I'm a prodigious user of GarageBand-cello in my music ... so you can imagine what a delight it is for me to hear my voice against a very beautifully played real cello.

It was Ed Hannifin who prompted me to dig out this song. He posted a tribute to the late Davy Graham on the forum recently, and when I mentioned my special love for Davy's collaboration with English folk goddess Shirley Collins in 1964, Ed responded with a link to their version of this song, and since then I haven't been able to get it out of my head.

My heartfelt thanks to Daniel, who has been a joy to work with.

Rebsie: vocals, 12-string guitar
Daniel: cello

Lyrics
Love Is Pleasing
words and music traditional
arranged by Rebsie Fairholm and Daniel Staniforth

Oh love is teasing and love is pleasing
And love's a treasure when first it's new
But as love grows older at length grows colder
And fades away like the morning dew

I left my mother and I left my father
I left my brothers and sisters too
I left my home and my fond relations
I left them all for the love of you

Now if I'd known before I courted
That love had been so hard to hold
I'd have locked my heart in a box of silver
And bound it fast with a key of gold

O Goodness Rebsie ..what a singing song ...now who s singing ? who s sound
so haunting and wonderful ...your voice is just one of the best I ever heard !
very nice song you chose to do ..the 12 strings with the luna cello just
perfect ..I would love to have this for to play all day and night ..this is
just what I wanty to hear ...thank you so very much for the gem !!!!
Rebsie said 293 days ago (February 5th, 2009)

Thank you Feter, what a compliment. Choosing the right songs is what it's all about really. Like a lot of English folk songs this is in the Dorian mode, which is by far my favourite and a scale I feel totally at home with ... and it has a lovely melody.

sweet regret
Nice work you two... yes, Daniel's live playing, along with Rebsie's live guitar/singing is a treat here, and a great song and instrumentation as well. Well done! Daniel, I like the dropping chord at the end, but if it were me, I would have wanted the final cello note to be drawn out and trail off slowly, not suddenly stop.

Thank you Eduard. It's refreshing to work with real instruments again, I usually seem to immerse myself in note-by-note midi these days, and just give myself a headache. This song was delightfully easy and stress-free to do.

Cheers Karen. The cello makes a wonderful accompaniment, and he plays it so beautifully. Thanks for mentioning my twanging. I don't often play my own guitars these days, but managed to do this in one take without cocking it up ... I surprised myself!!

So good
to have Daniel's cello contributing to this - and good to hear your 12-string Rebsie. Your voice is wonderfully forward in the mix - and sounding superb! A lovely song and an excellent collaboration.

Thank you Peter ... you're always supportive and I really appreciate it. It's been months since I played the 12-string. It was covered in dust and three semitones flat when I picked it up, and now of course I have sore fingers. Serves me right!

Beautifully done by both of you
Does this qualify as early middle English blues I wonder. it's is interesting to hear how different cultures express the feelings of love lost. This is so well done Rebsie and Daniel. thank you for bringing it back for the festival. An excellent collaboration.

Thank you Ed. One of the nice things about dredging up these old songs is that it reminds us how little human nature has changed over the centuries, however ephemeral the cultures and musical tastes may be. Glad you enjoyed our expression of ancestral angst!

Sheer delight...
To work with Rebsie's enchanting voice once again. In this piece, my cello simply tries to give back some if the delicate charm received from the vocal melody. It is so pleasing to find them so compatible!

It's very pleasing for me to have a collaborator who not only plays such beautiful haunting cello but also understands the spirit of the song and is unfazed by modal melodies in awkward keys!

It's been a revelation and a pleasure. Thanks again.

What a beautiful folk-style song.
This is so compelling and the cello certainly adds an important element to the whole. Great (and expected!) vocal that is controlled and sweet as you maneuver all those big jumps in the tune. Nice. ... I personally wanted a resolution on the last chord, but that's just my preference. ... How wonderful that you were able to collaborate so successfully. Daniel's skill with his REAL cello is truly a joy to hear.
Peace.

Rebsie said 292 days ago (February 6th, 2009)

Thank you so much, Paul. I agree Daniel's cello sounds magnificent here ... and when he sent me the isolated tracks with the cello on its own I got to hear how stunningly good his playing really is.

Those octave jumps in the melody are a challenge ... I can only sing this when my voice is properly warmed up!

And I take full responsibility for that unresolved chord!

Waited for this
Been waiting for this collab, and it damn sure was worth the wait.
Daniel's cello brings out the best in your voice Rebsie,
like chocolate enveloping caramel, and we get to feast on this treat.

Now, we await the mixing of your two splended vocals, what a treasure that would be.
I hope, I hope, I hope.

Really nice....
You did a really nice job of getting the lilt in the vocal here, Rebsie, and the bounces from the lower to the higher registers of the song come across with good pitch and nice tone... I think you also did well with 12-string picking...

Daniel's playing is sweet and simple...

The total impression is 'just enough'... everything simple and clear, nothing extraneous... which lets the beauties of the song itself come through...

This is one of those songs whose lyrics seem to pop up in twelve other folk songs... All of which I also love...

Really nice work, you two...

Thank you Ed, and thanks for providing the initial impetus.

Indeed it's amazing how many folk songs have morphed into different songs with interchangeable lyrics and melodies ... it's truly bewildering trying to work out which parts originally belonged to which songs. Fun to mix and match though.

LOVELY
REally sweet, voice and cello meld perfectly. Yes I'm thinking Davey Graham, Martin Carthy, Incredible String Band, that lovely english glow, and Robin Hood peculiarly, gambolling through Sherwood in his tights, I close my eyes and he's still there.
I love your voice a lovely purity.

What a joy this song is to listen to. And I am awestruck by the way Rebsie leaps those large and awkward intervals with the lightness of a spring fairy casting dew on the morning flowers. Makes it all sound so easy as well as delightful. One to listen to when the rest of the world seems dull and grey. Thanks gal!
