Season for Pain

Description
In 2007, my first year here on MacJams, I posted a version of the original 8-track analog recording of this song that I had tweaked a little in GarageBand just to get it sounding fuller. I was never happy with that posting so I took that version down late last year with the intent of reworking it someday.

Well, the Reunion Festival created an opportunity and a reason for me to do a little reworking on it. I redid the Drums and Bass, added a few guitar parts to it and brought in a Pedal Steel guitar for the verses and on the ending. Then I ran it through the mastering process and here it is, all decked out and ready for it's debut.

So for your listening pleasure, here is "Season for Pain" I hope you like the new version.

Thanks for listening,

Ed

Season of Pain

Verse I
The Sun came up this morning.
There's a gentle breeze blowin' through the pines
There's a Robin outside my window.
Singin' while the babblin' brook keeps time
There's a trace of smoke rollin' from the chimney.
It's a remnant of the fire on our last night
But the fire has grown old, and your love has grown cold.
And it looks as if the seasons gonna change

Chorus
Through my teardrops I see you leavin'.
And the raindrops start fallin' once again
The Robin lost his song, and I wonder what went wrong.
It looks as though the seasons gonna change
I guess its just the season of pain

Verse II
The Sun came up this morning.
There's an old man fishin' in the stream
There's a farmer out by the old road.
Plowing up his field with a team
The snow has all gone from the mountain.
And the winter winds have changed in - to spring
But there's tears in my eyes, and clouds in the sky.
And it looks as if the seasons gonna change

Chorus

Glad you dropped in to listen my friend and I appreciate those very kind words. Musically, this is one of my better songs I think because of the changes. It keeps the story from being to ridged and helps to keep the listener interested.

Thanks again for listening Norman, glad you enjoyed the song,

I appreciate you coming over to listen to this one and the kind words you left for me. I always wonder whether I'm actually improving on the original recording when I do these old songs like this.

It helps to hear that I may have done good. Thanks again for that my friend. Be well and be cool Bob,

That Steel Guitar!!
And that storytelling!! Both of them got me hooked on this song. I don't usually listen to Country tunes except for when I am watching Country Music Videos (I love country music videos). As I listen to this for the third time, I am imagining the video that would go along with it....Season of Pain....I really like the concept. Great song. I'm gonna listen again!

I think of all the songs I've written, this one and Whiskey & Teardrops are my best Country songs. This one needed to be redone and cleaned up a little so I decided now was as good a time as any since the Festival was going on.

I'm glad you like the way the new version turned out my friend, and I do very much thank you again for the great comments.

Man i am glad I listened to this
this sounds like real classic country, not sure but this really seems to be one of the best country sounds i've heard here at MJ. The vocal resonates quite good, nice lyrics. I personally think that lyrics shine brighter with a classic country sound like this. Especially when they rhyme. Plus this has a nice country dance feel.

Way to go! Very glad you posted this!

Thanks Bill
I can do Funk, Blues, Jazz, even Classical, but I haven't figured out how to make a Country song that isn't from the old school.

Most of the new Country they do now sounds more like Rock than Country, and while some of it is really quite good musically, it ain't Country to me.

Thanks for listening and the kind words my friend. Glad you enjoyed the song and I appreciate the kind words you sent along on it.

Be well and be cool Bill,

Glad you liked the song Mark, and I do appreciate the very kind comments. I like to tell a story in song sometimes and of the ones I've done that way, I think this is one of the best so far. It's a learning process for me that never stops. At least I hope I'm learning still, cause I keep trying to get it right.

Thanks again for listening Mark.

Thank you Mikki
I'm really glad you came over to listen to this one Mikki. Of all the story songs I've done I think this one is the best lyrically, and a personal favorite of mine. Musically it has a more complicated structure than the standard 3 chord progression and that gives it a more interesting character as well. It's nice to know that it touched you in some way.

Thank you for your very kind words about it my friend, they are very much appreciate and thanks again for listening.

Thanks Michael
Glad you liked "Season for Pain", and sent along the kind words my friend.

Yes that is a Pedal Steel, but as much as I wish I could say I played it, I can't. It's a series of loops from the Apple Rhythm Section JamPak that I sliced and dice till I had it working for the song.

The rest of the song is either sung or played by me or programmed in midi by me in the studio.

Thanks again for the very kind words Michael, they are appreciated.

Glad you listened to the new version and liked what you heard my friend. It's an older song I did in the early 90's that was in need of some updating. I like it a lot better than the original because of the Steel and other changes I made in it.

right then ed ....
sometimes being sick has some good things attached. I have a doc friend .. Matthew Koger ... a C/W artist with some recorded releases. Had to go for a check up this morning and I was telling him about you and this site ... actually took a cd of this for him ... hope you don't mind. He was blown away. Me too .... good one Ed ... smooth and classic...

Well needless to say, I'm glad you liked the song. I have mixed feelings about you being under the weather though as I'm sure you can understand. Of course I don't like it when one of my friends is sick, but by the same token I'm glad you decided to go to Matt to get a checkup.

The fact that you liked this song well enough to put it on a CD and take it to him speaks volumes my friend. I extremely happy about that and that you and he were "blown away" by it. My sincerest thank you for doing that Jack, I am indebted to you for your kindness.

I'm the one blown away by what you did my friend.

Thank you again, be well and be cool Jack, and I hope you're feeling better.

season is changing!
i don't know how I missed this or you but i just "found" you and can't tell you how glad I am to hear this. i've been looking all over MJ for some quality country and found a few tunes here and there but this and your more recent tune are the best CW songs I've heard on MJ. you have a voice that is truly your own (a rarity in country) - just a great "singing cowboy" kind of style. And your lyrics are just top notch man, great images and well worn but quality metaphors. i'm really impressed but better than that really happy to have found this. thanks!!

Smooth
Smooth as silk. You are the master of this genre. Your voice sounds really good on this, rich and warm and tempered by experience. I really like the changes and the lovely guitar touches are sweet. Lovely lyrics, and, as I say, great expressiveness in your vocal delivery that just makes the whole thing hang together. I think you did a great job on this. NIcely done, my friend. And kudos. Peace
