Description
Kevin (Bud)'s original composition, Tundra (http://www.macjams.com/song/49934) really stands on its own as a fine atmospheric piece evoking the frozen tundras of the far north. Being the chap that he is, he quickly agreed when I asked him if I could augment the piece with Cello and Double Bass. What I have tried to do here is use bowed strings in a slightly different context than usual. Instead of melody, sharp harmonics and sloping glissandos are used to heighten the the presence of ice, like sharp shards of glass, jagged and suspended over the listener. Believe it or not, the high notes at the end are the very highest harmonics possible on a cello.
I'd also like to wish Kevin all the best as he goes through the difficult time after losing his mother.
Here is his original song note:
Another Buddha Machine experiment using four of it's nine loops recorded from the box through the headphone jack. Some tweaking and filtering - but no cutting or pasting. Halfway through I introduce "boomerang" - a piece I posted a few months back.
This takes time to develop and starts off at low volume. TURN DOWN - best heard at low volume. I had trouble getting a low master - I guess iTunes normalizes to a degree.
I'm interested to hear if you are bothered by the piled up sonorities that verge on feedback. At low levels I think it works - but at higher levels it hurts my ears.
Kevin (Bud): Synthesizers
Daniel (Luna Trick): Cello & Double Bass

This is an incredible piece of work. Kind of floating over a drone but drifting in and out of it on every rhythmic and sonic level. Sharp ice was the mental image I was getting even before I read the description. Extraordinary how the high harmonics start to sound flute-like.
I don't have a problem with the piled up sonorities. In fact I'm astounded, this is one of the cleverest and most powerful things I've heard on MacJams (and no I don't say that to all the boys).
