Description

I have not participated much here at MacJams for a while, which is typical for me this time of year. From October through the new year my concentration has always been on preparing my choir for its Christmas concert. Since I have not commented on many songs, I feel a bit sheepish posting this new version of one of my earliest pieces, but I wanted to be part of Neil's brilliant idea.

I rerecorded the piano and strings on this piece and added what has become one of my favorite instruments, the English horn. This is a contemplative piece. Please sit and allow it to calm.

Very calming indeed. The English horn is a brilliant choice for this type of piece. Everything else works well to support that choice.
Funny - I find that my busy times are the Spring and late summer, when I'm getting music ready for Holy Week and the beginning of the school year. I'm glad you got over your 'sheepishness' to post this!

Actually, I used only one piano, the Bosendorfer from the plugin called Ivory. Might you have thought that using two pianos lowered the production value of the song? I'm not sure how I'd react if I thought I heard two different pianos in the same song. Interesting concept...

morning mist
I spent some time camping in Petit Jean park in Arkansas and when I would wake up there would be the most gorgeous mist lingering over the water, sparkling softly in the morning sunlight. You captured that picture perfectly in this music. Thank you for the memory.

The english horn is a perfect addition to the song, supporting the meditative (and a little melancholy) feel. I love the relaxed, improv feel to the piano - gorgeous playing. This is a beautiful updated version of a beautiful piece of music, Patrick.

I acquired Ivory and Miroslav Philharmonik since I wrote this, so replacing the piano and the strings seemed like a good place to start. The English horn is just a dream instrument to me - so expressive...

I'm always very pleased to hear from the man with the music degree, and I appreciate your generous comments.

By the way, listening to my iPod the other night, Galaxy Band 8, your ten and a half minute opus, came on. I was knocked out. What a spectacular triumph. Amazing.

Misty memory
Strange, I could have SWORN I commented on the original when you posted it long ago, but there's no trace of me there... I remember this well. Very nice touches here, the sparkling light on the water (piano), and the contemplative mood of the english horn (so well-tweaked it sounds like a live performance)... very nice update here. Your music is always so soulful and compelling, bravo Patrick!

Sublime soundscape
with the water gently lapping at the sides of my barely rocking canoe. Wow, this one is gorgeous Patrick - really takes me away. And I can't argue with your choice of English horn which works brilliantly in layering that mix of loneliness and the gentility of early morning nature awakening to the new day.

Production is first rate too, but I'm so moved that to be analytical is to take away from the wonder you created.

you are certainly on a whole different level.... you really know how to communicate without ever uttering a word... where I have to sweat over lyrics, you, because of your command of this language, are able to skip right over that incumbrance... I remember arriving at MJ... and early on, wrongly thinking that you represented the work being done at this marvelous new site that I'd stumbled upon... it didn't take very long to recognize that you were the cream....

Let me say this, Scott: your lyrics are inspirational, insightful, enlightening, and deeply moving. They may be in encumbrance to write, but the payoff is that they touch souls, and that makes them a great gift. Your music has never failed to move me, and I come back to it often - I also have sent friends and family members to your artist page to listen and be transported. You are a true artist, and your lyrics are a very significant facet of your artistry.

Doing penance
Well, the inescapable conclusion is that I am a Terrible Human! You are one of my favorite musicians (and not just here at MacJams, either), and I totally overlooked your last two (and maybe more? I will have to check!) submissions.

The 'futzpucker coolness' is once again very much in evidence, as are your other trademarks, such as an impeccable mix, warm sound, beautiful melodies, and tastefulness (tastiness?) in every compositional choice.

September to mid-April is always very busy (and stressful) for me (academic year), and all of January and early February are particularly nuts because I organize a new music festival at that time every year, so that is probably why I missed your last couple of submissions, but I am doing penance now, trying to catch up...

this is a heartbreaker from the get go.
there was a time when i'd put on particular pieces of music to release whatever needed to be gone, or call up something i thought i'd lost, only to discover it was still there. the richness of the piano against the strings and horn moves me in exactly the right direction. patrick - you're full of the Right Stuff. thank you so much for sharing that with us.
