Wowee!!!!
Smokey, this is fantastic!! Make sure you post to the SoundCloud Dropbox because this one is great! The strings are perfect and just the right amount of darkness with the sweet.

Makes me proud I put the info up in the forum so you could do this! Now I've got to get cracking myself...

i did as she asked. i really hope she hears it.

(did you listen to the other remixes? don't! i did not until i was all done with mine. for fear of contaminating my ideas.)

so many thanks for pointing me at this one! i'm very happy with how this came out.

it points out that real pro artists like Imogen really know what they are doing. this felt like it just fell into place, like she had set it all up just for me to find the right notes to go with it... all i had to do was listen closely to the notes she was singing.

thanks!

wow
Smokey this is awesome! Did you do this in Garageband? Awesome composition around Imogen's very cool vocals (i LOVE her) and the strings are wonderfully rich and full. I love how you add the lower register later in the song, filling it all out slowly. Very cool stuff. VERY cool ending. I love this.

Oh, boy. I just loved EVERYTHING about this. From the chilling, cut to the soul vocals, to the extremely lush orchestration. What a treat!

Geez Bill
Didn't take you long to get this one in the can. Great job! Sounds like the vocals came after the strings. You found a real complimentary approach to this.

Excellent work Bill
You really hit the perfect backing. if I didn't know how this was done I would have sworn it was a ground up collab. You really have a good feel for string arrangements and the technical skill to pull it off. This is great.

thanks Bud

i still hear some imperfections, but still i'm pretty happy with it. there's a rhythmic phrase (like right at the end) that makes setting chords really tough. and the transition into the bridge, and out of the bridge just isn't quite right... but all in all, i'm happy with it.

pro vocalists are amazing. if you mess around with cutting up a track, or checking pitches, you'll find that every phrase is exactly (or darn close to being) on time and on pitch. it's just awesome!

I'd hate to think
that the accuracy you attribute to Imogen is the result of digital correction - but why not? If a take is emotionally right but slips off a little here and there - what professional wouldn't correct it so it would fall into time and key? I'm not being cynical or passing judgment - just wonder how prevalent this activity is.

it's possible, but i doubt it (although my first audition of the raw tracks had me wondering) - it's just that a pro singer has really tight control over their voice. i'm always impressed with that.

Nice Job!
I did a version of this song too. The coolest thing is all the different things the same vocal track inspires in different people. I would not have heard it this way if you didn't do it. I took more of a pop/rock direction with it. I really love this. I had to listen three times!

wow, three times! that's quite a complement. i appreciate it.

thanks

i know what you mean and there being lots of possibilities!

after i finished my remix i listened to all the ones on Twitter at the time.

i had an overwhelming impression that many people were running roughshod over Imogen's lovely vocal melodies and trying to force the tracks to fit their own ideas for a song. there's a big difference between passing tones and outright dissonance; and ninths or elevenths only go so far before they sound darned awful.

(sorry, i felt the need to vent. i guess it happened right here, right now. my apologies.)

Pro stuff!
Among the better I have heard here on MJ. This just shows what good vocals do to a song. The strings you have added so much enhances the feel of the song, and if this was on the radio I would say ... "yeah, that´s a hit"!

Great!

late to the party
but I was busily working on my own version and didn't want to listen too much to other versions until I got mine done. This is really pretty different and I must say totally great! Nice little passing notes to push the harmonies in different directions, to resolve phrases in an inventive way. Now I feel like mine is the caveman version and yours is the modern man version. Seeing that you got yours done so quick did make me feel like I should charge on and wrap up mine as soon as possible.

i agree: don't listen to other versions until you've captured your own ideas.

i feel very strongly that the notes Imogen sings clearly imply chords. and i think modulations from verse to chorus to bridge are plainly evident. i suspect a detailed analysis of the melody would bear this out, but it's only a hunch on my part. i was driven by mesmerized intuition on this song, so i'm probably completely wrong on that.

in any case, thank you very much!

skillful art
imogen heap is an expert singer. however, smokeyvw is an expert of orchestration. to add a bed around a voice, it is difficult. to make sampled strings dance here, it is difficult. you have great success here. it is a beautiful song. 0x0

i would love to score a real quartet some day...

i think the song is in C.

the opening verse is in the fifth, G. Imogen never sings an F#, but i'm certain of it.

the following chorus is in the tonic, C. i feel the chords are I IV V-, and since it ends with V (G) it's perhaps not so obvious. but it's in C for sure.

we get another verse and chorus, and then the bridge begins in the relative minor, A minor. we hear i - iv - i - iv v. then it modulates to G briefly.

the final chorus is again in C and it ends there.

so the overall architecture is: V I V I vi V I

just wanted to say this.

thanks

just right
It seems very right for the vocals what you have added. And I think it's very creative and strong to use just the strings. Her voice is so cool and strong in itself, that letting drums, bass and the rest of the band take a break, seems to be a wise decision. You play those strings with confidence and they sound brilliant in companionship with her voice.

To add what adds and doesn't detract or distract
with such dead on artistry is a real gift. This works brilliantly - support for the vocal that provides the right frame to show off the singer in her best light. Kudos!!!
