La Dicha (a poem by Borges) w/ Randolf

Description
I know this is artsy, pretentious, and self-gratification - but please indulge me for the sake of Music. My thanks to Randolf for letting me use his excellent track "Unkown" (http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=106460)

The music prompted me to try an experimental version of this wonderful poem by Jorge Luis Borges, one of my favourite writers. This is an experiment that may or may not have worked. You be the judge.

Lyrics
Happiness by Jorge Luis Borges

Whoever embraces a woman is Adam. The woman is Eve. Everything happens for the first time. I saw something white in the sky. They tell me it is the moon, but what can I do with a word and a mythology. Trees frighten me a little. They are so beautiful. The calm animals come closer so that I may tell them their names. The books in the library have no letters. They spring forth when I open them. Leafing through the atlas I project the shape of Sumatra. Whoever lights a match in the dark is inventing fire. Inside the mirror an Other waits in ambush. Whoever looks at the ocean sees England. Whoever utters a line of Liliencron has entered into battle. I have dreamed Carthage and the legions that destroyed Carthage. I have dreamed the sword and the scale. Praised be the love wherein there is no possessor and no possessed, but both surrender. Praised be the nightmare, which reveals to us that we have the power to create hell. Whoever goes down to a river goes down to the Ganges. Whoever looks at an hourglass sees the dissolution of an empire. Whoever plays with a dagger foretells the death of Caesar. Whoever dreams is every human being. In the desert I saw the young Sphinx, which has just been sculpted. There is nothing else so ancient under the sun. Everything happens for the first time, but in a way that is eternal. Whoever reads my words is inventing them.

Nowt wrong with pretentious self-gratification ...
Your voice reminds me of David Bowie (which is a big compliment coming from me, I bloody love him). And it's distinctively you as well ... you have a nice combination of low softness and subtle vibrato which works very well with this kind of melodic narrative.

It's nice to hear you upfront in the mix ... you have a voice well worth hearing.

Mix-wise, the strong synth sound is a little over-powering in my headphones, but otherwise the backing track fits with it very nicely. Well done both!

Yeah - not my best mix
Sounded good in the headphones - but on some speakers the synth overpowers. Thanks for the DB reference - hope I'm not type-cast!

Hi!
Well, it is a bit pretentious, but I think it's mostly the backing track. The sort of grandiose chords are one thing, but it sounds like it's quite distorted, and maybe that's just sort of a bit-crushed sound that I'm just not able to appreciate. On the other hand, your voice and melody reminds me of David Sylvain, who I quite like. I think this could be nice but you have to go back to the drawing board with the backing track, because it's just not working for me. Tjhe distortion is killing me! And no offense intended to Randolf; I'm not familiar with him. Of course, this is imho. I think this would work better with a sort of downtempo Ryuichi Sakamoto sort of backing.

okay so I checked out the original unkown
And it doesn't sound so distorted on iComp. It sounds more mellow. I still think there's some distortion in that synth chord thing, but it's probably just the patch includes some overdrive. And then maybe you EQ'ed it when you mixed it in so it had more punch, but it's stepping all over the space where your voice should sit. Vocalists usually do mix their own vocals too quiet relative to backing tracks. I do like the parts when that synth isn't playing, the rhythm track and the little piano noodling.
Sorry to be so harsh! But look on the bright side, you can delete my comment if you like! LOL wink!

Thanks Jim
I am a massive Japan and David Sylvian fan - so I well pleased with your comment. As per my response to Rebs, I didn't quite get the mix right. I wish I had Sakamoto to work with - Jansen and Barbieri too!

Gotta agree with Jim
I really like what you're doing (no problem with pretense - or self gratification for that matter) - but the backing seems a bit too busy in my opinion. I don't hear or have problems with distortion - but I think your voice could use more space.

"I, unfortunely am, Borges..."
You can´t get anything wrong if Borges is by your side.
he is pretty much my favorite authour but I don´t think his poetry is better than his prose.
Great experiment. You voice really sounds like a man who passed through everything the poem describes.
Congrats, Daniel!

We plough the same furrows...
I am a Borges enthusiast and scholar - and absolutely - his prose is far superior. Garden of forking paths, etc. are some of my fave stories. Thanks for listening and commenting...

i have mentioned quite a few times how great your vocals sound. I'm really impressed how you have managed to find a weave the vocal melody in.

David B
I agree with Vic. Very Bowie. A magical, dreamlike feel, altho the synth sounds came across as perhaps thinner and less 3D in my speakers than you had intended: Bowie with a Casio keyboard on his lap all alone on stage with the silhouette of a woman dancing behind a scrim upstage of him. Enjoyed the lyrics, too. (Consider redoing the backing, per Jim's comments, and using more ethereal, time-altering sounds, more romantic sounds that either swirl, and/or a more contemporary downbeat groove that morphs thru the many textual changes.) Thanks for bring this poem to life.

I've been listening to your CDs this week - so I know you'll appreciate my efforts to experiment. I heard a certain sound but may have fallen a bit short in achieving it.

Your "experiment"...
definately worked. The lyrics are mindblowing alone, but your presentation of them is equally so. This is up beat, otherworldly in feeling, and a beautiful work of art. lol, what a trip, in all this diversity, we are all one! :)

Also.....
I love the picture too. It sends the feelings or warmth and richness, a beautiful intensity, that also touches the heart. I like how both music and art give off a nightly feeling and at the same time, light and beauty.

Pretentious?
Um, yes...not YOU -- Jorge.
In some way you have supported that pretension with your effusive orchestration that, to me, is as much over the top as the sentiments of the poem. Makes me wonder if you are arranging a fantastic parody or if you are actually serious (...as I hope for the former!). Nit:I cannot understand a word without the text. So, ultimately, what's the point? Kudo: your inventiveness/creativity are spectacularly on display here. You have a musical mind that seems to be boundless.
Peace.
Paul

Exactly
Borges is all about over the top post-modernism - effusiveness and self-referentiality. That's what I was going for!
